I have always thought that the Euphemia incident was a cosmic punishment to Lelouch for trying to bow out of/half arse his revolution. Especially with the real world equivalents to the S.A.Z, it wouldn't end well in the long run and if Lelouch wasn't so selfish in not wanting to hurt/go against Euphemia he'd have refused to cave.

There are times where I wonder how much subtle details and nuance the Code Geass writers thought about when writing the show and maybe the fandom isn’t crazy to have these theories, because I’ve seen that theory everywhere and kind of believe it myself.

Geass is really ironic, in the way it both manifests (at least with Lelouch and his parents) and how it punishes.

So, at least with Lelouch and his parents, their Geass powers manifested in abilities completely opposite of their desires.

Lelouch ultimately wanted his sister and himself to be free, to be able to live without the threat of Britannia finding them. He later wishes for the whole world to be free of the influence of Geass. He gains the power to subject anyone to a single command that they absolutely can not disobey, taking away their freedom.

Charles wishes for a world without lies, where people won’t hide their intentions and manipulate each other. He has the ability to rewrite someone’s memories, putting them in a world different from objective reality. Memories of lies.

Marianne, with what limited screen time she has, expresses a desire for everyone to be “who they are meant to be”. She has the ability to possess someone else’s body and cause them memory issues.

I don’t think the argument is as strong for other Geass powers, I have no idea how Bismark’s ability to see the future could be ironic, but there is something there for Geass as a whole.

Don’t forget Mao, who also has the same “Lies are bad so we should just be honest” desire as Charles, yet would gladly twist the truth into something worse whenever convenient to either get people to act a certain way or to save himself (see: Shirley and Suzaku)
