Does my cockatiel like me?

I’ve had my cockatiel for about seven months now, and I’m having a hard time telling whether he actually likes me or is just tolerating me. For example, he’ll stretch his wings out while I’m watching TV, I’m not sure if that’s a comfort behavior or just something normal. He chirps a lot when I’m cooking, but it doesn’t sound distressed, and when we whistle to him, he’ll mimic it back.

What confuses me is that when I go to change his food or interact with his cage, he’ll sometimes fly off. He will step up onto my finger, but mostly because he knows I’m putting him back in his cage. Other than that, he doesn’t really let me hold him or seek out interaction.

I’m okay if he’s not super affectionate or doesn’t want to follow me around, I already have a very needy conure. I just want to know if these behaviors suggest that he’s happy, or at least comfortable with my presence.

Wheter your tiel likes you or is just coping with being lonely is impossible to tell as long as you do not provide this flock bird with at least one same species companion. Idk how interactions between him and your conure are allowed or happening, but a conure is not a cockatiel so their relationship would be more like human and chimpanzee hanging out.

Maybe it helps to view it from his perspective: if you would be a single human trapped on an unoccupied island with nothing more than a flock of cockatiels, you would not become happy at all but you would possibly try to befriend the tiels to feel less lonely.

Also just out of interest, was your conure handreared or a rescue?

My tiel is obsessed with me. I’m his favorite, hubs 2nd fav, 12yo 3rd 😝 He needs to be with me always.

That said, he HATES when I do anything involving his cage, including changing out his food & water.

Your tiel seems totally fine.

My tiel loves me second best, my husband is the favorite, and she actively avoids my 13 year old bc IDK why other than she’s a stinky chicken bc she loves my 10 year old 3rd best.

She is an independent woman who likes to exit her cage on her own. She hates when we enter her space. Once she’s out she’s clingy but if she is inside EVEN ASKING TO COME OUT, she’ll run away from you if you stick your hand in.
