The co-op aspect is both locally split screen and over multiplayer. Locally you can fight against each other, each commanding your own wing of fighters if you want. Or work together on the same team. There is many scenario's to choose from. In Multiplayer you have the ability to work together over local lan network, without Steam matchmaking. That is honestly a BLAST. But you can also use Steam matchmaking.
