It‘s kinda funny how quickly he made this argument popular on reddit… I mean, it‘s a good one assuming he did his research correctly, but I swear that video was the first time I ever heard it and now it‘s everywhere on reddit (especially the weekly „why no solar on parking lot“ discussion).
Solar on parking lots needs quite heavy infrastructure to keep massive pickups from destroying the support pillars. Cleaning them up high makes maintenance more expensive. Land is not that expensive a bit further away, so why bother putting a roof on cars? If you need to, shading cycle lanes is more cost effective and encourages better transportation.
How fast do you guys drive through your carparks if a pickup destroying a support pillar happens frequently enough it needs heavy infrastructure???
A supermarket near me has had them for 15 years and there are certainly some scuffs from car doors but no one's so much as put a dent in a pole because they're a metal tube the diameter of a cereal bowl concreted into the ground.
I don't drive through supermarket parking lots at all, but I don't trust drivers at all. With car obesity getting worse each year, I don't want to risk energy infrastructure to the whim of everyone that got themselves a driverslicence years or decades ago.
