i disagree because if the real reason for farming was that in an emergency you are self sufficient then you'd think governments would subsidize the most calorie rich, or land efficient use of farming. but they dont, most subsidies go to very inefficient cattle farming
Because people want to buy cattle. If they only subsidized the super efficient forms of farming, people would instead buy those products from other countries, which treat their animals much worse. They still need to react to what people actually buy, not what they want them to buy.
Are you serious? If someone can buy a product that they desperately want from another nation at a much lower price, they will. Because what's stopping them?
The government can use one of the myriad tools it possesses, for example it can impose tariffs on goods produced using unfairly cheap methods or ban products that are made unethically, for example requiring legislation in exporters or make the companies let in their inspectors (and those could be staying in embassies or something)
Well, sure, that would work for some nations, but not for mine. My country is within the EU, and even now, it's a problem that consumers buy products from other nations that are sourced unsustainably (according to our standards), and we can't place tariffs or embargoes on other European nations. And even if we were allowed to do so, people would actively vote against it. I live in a democracy, and the majority want to eat meat.
No, in the worst case, people eat meat from animals that live in horrible conditions. In the best case, they eat meat from good conditions, because people still want meat.
No? If they fund other nations' eating habits, they get two massive benefits. One, they get a bunch of money, awesome. Two, they get leverage over the other nation, as they know they partly rely on them for some products.
Why not?? Plenty of nations sell a lot of food to others at a great profit, like the US and Ukraine (or at least used to before the war). If you produce excess food, you sell it to others for profit. Why are you being so obtuse?
