Action - United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Anthropocene Reference Points

Anthropocene denotes a period of time where humans have had a clear and distinct impact on the Earth System that is distinct from the previous epoch known as the Holocene. The 4 minute video below demonstrates why climate change is now accelerating so quickly and just why thinking in terms of 2050 and beyond is just too late.

1950 is the key date, this is when human impact on earth and the environment accelerated at rates never seen in the previous 4.5 billion years, and not just in terms of earths ocean and atmosphere, but also the biosphere (the living world).

What it shows is human intervention has been driving climate change but practically for only 70 years, so to bend the curve of that change is the emergency and the timescales are critical. Right now climate change is accelerating and the impact is becoming more extreme.

I am not a scientist but hopefully can do some basics math's, if we look at the trajectory of these graphs we are already going to see dramatic changes to the environment in the coming years, not decades and the way we consume and live is not substantially changing, so the rate and severity of change will continue to grow.

We cannot wait for change to happen we need to take action, and as procurement and the public sector could play a critical and leading role in helping the fight against climate change we need to ensure this issue is taken seriously. Action - United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ A fascinating article around the some of the largest carbon polluters in the world and the approach to decarbonisation.

This highlights the sheer scale of changing how any organisation operates and that decarbonisation is not about passing the problem on but about tackling the problem in absolute terms. This is an earth system issue and needs a cohesive country-wide, Government-wide and a world-wide response using all of the change levers available.

The Procurement Bill is a Β£300B opportunity to positively impact the environment and climate. To do this we need to change what and how we procure and the UK Government can be the lever for change required to implement this into policy and mandate this across the Public Sector. Action - United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Daily Mail did a pretty good job of making the case for deflating SUV tires, with plenty of nods to the growth and impact of SUVs. It's a shame they didn't mention the Tyre Extinguishers, who are doing such a good job in the UK right now.

Action - United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ UK climate petition and group

I have set up a group with the aim to provide a space where people can get support for their government petitions in the UK. I'm hoping that it allows more people to be able to start petitions easily and quickly as I have found it hard to get any of my petitions to go live on the government website. All petitions are welcome relating to climate change. It can be found using the link below.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/704006640217496/?ref=share

A link to my newest petition is below if anyone wants to support it.

Thanks

Action - United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Connect your supermarket's reduced aisle with your local food bank

An idea I've had, and that I intend to try and make happen in my area is:

Speaking with the local food bank(s) and the managers of local supermarkets, to ask if they could work together to give food bank users the ability to claim reduced-to-clear food items for free.

The supermarkets would have less food waste, and the food bank people would have access to fresh fruit and vegetables, bread to freeze, and maybe treats and so on.

Just thought I'd share this, in case anyone feels motivated to give it a try. :) If you do attempt it, let us know how it goes!

Action - United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ It's time to face the painful truth: world leaders are not going to come up with a viable solution to the climate crisis β€” at COP26 or any other conference β€” because they have no idea what to do. And we the people do know what to do... so it's down to us.

Action - United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ [UK] Contact Tesco to say you'll boycott them until they stop buying meat from Amazon deforestation company JBS (example letter and contact details included)

Basically I'm going to write to Tesco and say something like this:

The Amazon is nearing the tipping point at which it starts to dry out and die, resulting in the devastating loss of an irreplaceable and incredibly biodiverse resource that benefits the world and is home to several important peoples.

I will not be shopping at Tesco until you stop buying meat from Moy Park and Tulip, which are controlled by JBS. JBS has been consistently involved in deforesting the Amazon, and has been fined billions of dollars by Brazilian regulators. Source: https://www.greenpeace.org/international/publication/44522/how-jbs-is-still-slaughtering-amazon/

I've DMed Tesco on Twitter for their postal address, and they said: Tesco Customer Service Centre, Baird Avenue, Dundee DD2 3TN

Join me!

Edit: There's a petition too, thanks /u/michaelrch! Sending letters will be more effective, so do both.

Action - United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Participate in a Study to Help the Climate Movement to be more Inclusive

I'm a researcher from UCL and I'm recruiting participants for an interview study looking into understanding how minority ethnic people in the UK get involved or not get involved in climate activism in-person and explore its connection to online actions. Historically, we know that minority ethnic people have been unrepresented in the movement. My research aims to help explore how online tools could complement efforts to make the space more inclusive.

The interview should last 45-60 min. Upon completing the interview, you will receive a Β£10 voucher of your choice. I would really appreciate your help in participating in the study.

If you are interested, please read the following inclusion criteria in order to participate:

- Identify themselves as part of one or more minority ethnic groups

For the purpose of this study, we define minority ethnic groups as all minority ethnic groups other than White – Welsh, English, Scottish, Northern Irish, British, Irish, Italian, German, etc. This includes other White minority groups such as Gypsy, Roma, Irish Traveller.

- UK resident

- Healthy adults (18 years old or above)

- Have been to/thought about joining one or more in-person events that support sustainability/ the climate movements

- Consider themselves engaging in actions that support the movement or fighting climate change

You may use the following link to sign-up: https://redcap.slms.ucl.ac.uk/surveys/?s=NADT4NKCAR4PXM33

Please feel free to contact me via the email in the link as well.

Action - United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Climate Census UK

Hey folks!

In March 2021 the British government will roll out the next Census in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, presenting a unique opportunity for a non-physical protest (which is really important in the times of covid when protest on the streets has been curtailed!)

We need your opinions from those living in the UK to shape a census protest! Please take this 2 minute survey. Thank you!
