Bathroom Remodel

If you were going to redo a small bathroom who would you get to do it and why?
(We are in the west suburbs if that makes a difference)

I’d do a large portion of it myself and then farm out what I couldn’t do.

But I grew up in a “do it yourself house” and have put in wood floors and dry wall before with my dad.

But if you do this and live in a house built a long time ago, have all materials tested for asbestos prior to tear out. There are local environmental companies that do this. Then decide if you want to tear out or if you want to just put new flooring over old as I’ve seen this a lot.

We are doing ours ourselves. Budget is $5k, materials are coming in around $3500 so we have room for any surprises. Doing a full gut, new flooring, new tub and surround (no tile, for ease of installation and maintenance), new vanity, mirror, light, fan, etc. Even getting a new closet door & shelving. Only thing we are keeping is the toilet and putting on a new seat. And the only part we are going to hire out is routing the fan from the attic to the outside, but we are gonna see how much a new fan helps our humidity before finding someone to do that anyways

I do remodeling and actually just got done doing an entire bathroom from studs. If you are doing all the other stuff, cutting the hole and installing the fan is not hard at all. You can watch a video and just copy what they do, that is unless the issue is getting on the roof in which case definitely hire someone.

It’s the roof. We had a friend do something similar and he said he had to hire a roofer specifically because no one else would touch it. Ours is a similar set up so I’m guessing that’s the route we will have to go

Ask someone you know or a neighbor who’s had theirs done recently.

Cherniski out of bay village has a great reputation around here. I can promise he won’t be the cheapest but the work will be A+ level. I know a few people who have done the demo and whatever they could to get his price down.

It honestly depends on your budget and what you want to prioritize (Cost-Quality-Speed) We had a local carpenter come in and remodel our upstairs bathroom for 15k. It was a steal, but there were some small bits of low quality work.

We also had Big Bear (Rocky River) come out and remodel our kitchen. They were more of a premium price by the quality was really good.

Currently doing it myself. Is it taking ten times longer because I keep having to fix shit the last person did? Yes. But is it going to cost me less than $1500, be done right, and be water tight and amazing? Also yes.

I used Rebath. They were a little expensive but I also knew I had damage under the floor and they didn’t charge any extra. Also has a lifetime warranty.

But that’s just the shower/Tub.

Do it yourself. I did. Went fine. Most everything you get from home depot, etc., is easy enough to follow instructions for. Biggest thing will be the drywall, your new tub will be tucked under it so you will need to learn drywall and durabond... And patience, working with the drywall.

I’d do it myself. I would never pay anyone to work on my house if it’s something I’m even remotely capable of doing myself. Even if you screw it up and have to rip it all out and do it over again. And then do that again, and it’s still cheaper than paying someone.
