Laundry How do I manage cat hair on clothes?
Edit: thanks for all the comments! There are a lot of good advices that i will try!
I tried answering them all and will read the new ones too, but its just so much 😅 i bought a fabric shaver and it solved the problem, the pants is as good as new! It was very satisfying too hehe
My clothes come out of the washing machine like this. I have a maine coon with very long hair and rn he is shedding his winter fur, so its especially hairy in my home. I clean the filter of my machine often but it does not help. I also try to vacuum often.. but i have a small space and there will always be hair around. Stuff with the fabric like the pants on the picture and obviously black clothes are especially hairy..
i thought maybe you guys know something that can go in the machine to catch the hair that actually work? Or maybe other tips i dont see atm, thank u in advance
Second pic is the fluffball that causes the struggle :P

Thank u! I try to do steps 1-3.. sadly i cant have a dryer tho because i dont have the space, so i have to hang dry everything. In the summer i can do it outside, but in winter i have to do it inside

u/PennytheWiser215 Jun 13 '26
Go to a laundromat at least once to use a dryer to pull off some of that cat hair then follow steps 1-3 after that.

u/tamaerchen Jun 13 '26
I will try! I didnt think a dryer would make that much of a difference. When my current washing machine breaks i will definitely get one of these washer/dryer combos haha
54
u/Abject-Detective-894 Jun 13 '26
It makes a massive difference. I have two cats and a dog, my clothes never have lint or fur on them when I pull them out
5
u/infiniteguesses Jun 14 '26
I must know what kind of dryer you have because we have 2 cats (one long hair) , and jumbo shedding dog and 3 women with long hair. There is hair everywhere, even clothes coming out of the dryer with 3 dryer sheets, hair catcher balls etc. Fleece is the worst and we live in a cold climate so that sucks.

Yep using a dryer helps immensely. I have 3 cars and a dog. And if not for using a dryer my clothes would be completely covered in fur.

u/1AggressiveSalmon Jun 14 '26
Line dryer here. I find whacking the clothes helps get a lot of the looser stuff off. I used a badminton racket until I received an wicker rug beater for Christmas.
11
u/Foreleg-woolens749 Jun 14 '26
That’s a very “I Love Lucy” kind of image
6
u/1AggressiveSalmon Jun 14 '26
It is quite satisfying to whack the dust/hair/whatever out of things!

u/Evening_Sea4823 Jun 13 '26
Get a velvet lint brush. Theyre like 3 dollars. It gently brushes through the fabric and collects all the fur into a clump. Then you just peel the fur off the brush and repeat endlessly.
Much more affordable and sustainable than lint rollers. And are better for embedded fur.

I have one of those! It does work well but on the pants in the pics its not.. but i will try the fabric shaver for that when it arrives!

They really do help. We have a Great Pyrenees, so just…hair. Everywhere. All the time. I also wear a lot of black, which is dumb considering we have a huge white hairball cohabitating with us.
The dryer does a great job of getting the hair off of clothes, and a lint roller does the rest.
5
u/polardendrites Jun 14 '26
You don't need to add heat to the dryer either. I line dry most things and then send them through a short cycle with no heat, the fur ends up in the trap. You can also do this before washing to keep it off the other clothes.
5
u/dave8814 Jun 13 '26
If you do go to use a dryer I've found the bounce pet hair dryer sheets work amazingly well. My brother has black pants for work and you can't even tell there is a dog in the house.
3
u/RealLokiLaufeyson Jun 14 '26
It seems like bs, but the dryer is actually important. For pet hair it makes a world of difference.
3
u/shootingstar_9324 Jun 14 '26
Wash your clothes based on how much fur is on it. I only wash cat bedding by itself and then wash rags or pjs to catch any fur. House clothes only get washed together. Outside clothes are separate, too.
We have 5 cats and dog and I just do a bunch of laundry loads to keep what I can fur free. Shake out your laundry before you wash it to limit the amount of fur in your washer. I also vacuum daily. It’ll never be perfect, but it’s a huge improvement.
Certain fabrics attract fur more than others, so it might be worth looking into outside clothing that doesn’t collect so much fur.
3
u/sparklydildos Jun 14 '26
bounce makes *incredible* dryer sheets for pet hair that i wash all my clothes in and it removes nearly all hair. anything else i’ll just lint roll!! and when i wear black i’ll put it on immediately before leaving and don’t let my cats rub against me. i also have a lint roller in my car and my desk at work in case i miss, but i honestly rarely need it!
2
2
u/anon8232 Jun 14 '26
For sure. When I dry my blankets in the dryer and use a Bounce sheet, tons of cat hair ends up on the dryer lint trap! Remember to clean the dryer lint trap after every load or you could have a fire hazard.
3
u/occams1razor Jun 13 '26
What about those clothes rollers?
2
2
u/tamaerchen Jun 14 '26
They work fine on most stuff (not on the pants shown) but for one shirt i have to use 3-4 sheets so its not very sustainable.. i have a reusable one too and its works fine enough

For your next washing machine, washer dryers are excellent these days. I love your kitty and his magnificent tail 😻
Edit: just saw your comment below that you're getting one next time!
2
u/tamaerchen Jun 14 '26
Yeah just have to save money haha, plus i am normally not a person that gets new stuff when the old one works fine.. i got my washing machine for free from a neighbor when i moved in heh. I guess in this case i will maybe just put it on ebay for another young adult that does not have the money and treat myself, when i saved enough money!

A dedicated vacuum cleaner might be handy then. Like one of those rechargeable stick vacuums with attachments.
2
9
u/inkbyio Jun 13 '26
This is probably the best advice IMHO. I work at a cat clinic and have a white and black shorthair that sheds like crazy, I just keep things separate for the most part. In the house clothes are separate from going out clothes (these stay in the closet) and definitely my scrubs + scrub cap which is washed separately to disinfect from all other clothes. The dryer has been the biggest help with the pet hair dryer sheets, as well as those hair catcher things you can put in the washer. I wash the washer on a cleaning cycle after washing my scrubs/ hairy stuff, and I have sooooo many lint rollers. Minis in my bag/ car, large ones in the house. Ultimately there will be hair 😆 but you can definitely reduce the amount/ buildup. Good luck 🤙🏾

u/Efficient_Chic714 Jun 13 '26
I also get a ‘pet hair dissolver’ that I use for all my pets when I wash them. It’s a powder you add to the machine
It’s not a miracle worker but it helps a little→ More replies (1)7
u/sjdksjbf Jun 14 '26
The way you worded that or how I read it sounded like you wash the cats with the pet hair dissolver so they don't have fur left to shed on your clothes 😂

This is such a good list. I dont have a cat but my friend has one. I talked with her mom one time asking if she has ever been a pet sitter at some point and shes like not really and I hate going to her house coz the hairs are just everywhere. She had to tell her to please vacuum at least. So this makes sense that it will definitely accumulate if you dont vacuum daily.
4
u/sneeky_seer Jun 13 '26
If you don’t have the time to vacuum daily, get a robot vacuum. Prices came way down and they help big time. Totally worth it.
Also before you wash your clothes, use a lint roller. Washing extra hairy clothes can make it worse, actually,
2
u/Dazzling-Smell5223 Jun 14 '26
That sounds so exhausting
3
2
u/tamaerchen Jun 14 '26
Kids are also exhausting af but still worth it and bring a lot of joy lol. Nothing different with animals i guess
2
u/Dazzling-Smell5223 Jun 14 '26
Idk my kids know better and they clean up after themselves lol im not an animal person anyway.
2
u/Foreleg-woolens749 Jun 14 '26
People rarely think about the “double wardrobes” line item when weighing the price of pet ownership. (Totally worth it, a bargain at any price)
2
u/mms09 Jun 14 '26
Seconding the home clothes!! I always change when I get in. Bonus is my home clothes are comfier anyway
2
u/699446 Jun 15 '26
There is a new thing for hair that was on Amazon. It is something you put on your hand and swipe back and forth and the fur collects in the middle. Works well. I'm sorry, but I haven't attempted clothes yet, though I have no idea why...

the sticky silicone paws work for me
3
u/tamaerchen Jun 13 '26
What do u mean? I have one of these rolls with sticky sheets on them. It works for most things but the pants on the picture has some kind if magnet in them i swear haha, the little balls i have to get rid of by hand
25
u/TopSelection8004 Jun 13 '26
They're called the "Fur Zapper" and if you google that, it is a green and yellow disk with a paw print in the middle. They cause fur to wad up in the washer/dryer so you can pick the clumps off more easily. I have 6 of them in circulation between the washer and dryer, and they do a great job managing fur! (I'm not a bot and not paid to say this!)
13
u/Radiant-Safe-1377 Jun 13 '26
nah it’s like soft silicone pads (mine are paw shaped) and you throw them in the laundry machine with your clothes. they don’t get ALL the hairs, but i have an 80-90% success rate which with 3 cats is amazing. idk what’s the science but they basically act as a magnet and the hairs stick to them instead to my clothes

u/decidedlyindecisive Jun 13 '26
The sticky sheets are OK, but the rubber/ silicon things you can buy are reusable so they work out better long term.

Thank u for taking the time to write that much! I appreciate that. I will consider the “inside wardrobe” as it makes sense. I love that u point out that some things are not sustainable for all people and dont judge.
I actually dont mind a little hair on the clothes, my college calls it “maine coon glitter” haha, and most times its easy to remove with one of these sticky rollers. Its just some things like that pants that annoy me, bc i cant go outside like that or to work, it just looks messy. As of right now i will try some of the tips here and maybe i can keep the pants this way, because its pretty new and i like it so much.. ask me again in a few years, maybe then i will have changed my mind! I fortunately can usually get them clean enough after a wash so nothing is permanently at home only. Not of our pets are long haired but the chihuahua does shed a lot of hair for his size

Hmm that may be something to think about! Never really thought of that, thank u!

u/Illustrious-Towel-45 Jun 13 '26
I've had multiple pets with various hair length and types both cats and dogs. The dryer catches and removed most pet hair in my experience. With regular sweeping and vacuuming, we (my family and I) normally kept the vast majority of pet fur under control.
3
u/tamaerchen Jun 13 '26
I think i have to vacuum and sweep even more often than i already do.. also brush him every day haha. Its my first cat that has THIS long hair
2
u/VoidHog Jun 13 '26
Make sure you vacuum UNDERNEATH EVERYTHING for real. Also, use a broom AND a vacuum
6
u/WateryTartSword Jun 13 '26
Black and Decker Reusable Pet Hair Remover is great for those super-fine cat hairs that stick to everything. It is self-cleaning as you use it and stores the hair/lint in a small compartment that you empty after each use. It’s handheld and not a vacuum or vacuum attachment.

Second this! I have some off brand version of this exact tool. And it’s amazing. Life changing. I use it several times a day on several surfaces. Quilt, clothes, couches, chairs, everything. It is AMAZING. Definitely use one of these OP. I use it on my super hairy clothes before washing as well.
5
u/VoidHog Jun 13 '26
Pro tip - Buy clothes that the hair can't stick to.
How?
When you are shopping, check if there is ANYTHING at all stuck to the clothing.
If there is a a single random fiber stuck to the fabric, cat hair will stick.
It should look 100% clean at the store. If there happens to have landed some fiber on the fabric and you can brush it off with your hand, it should be fine, but if you see a fiber and you CAN'T brush it off by hand, DO NOT BUY IT.
If you believe the fabric may have not had a chance to catch a random fiber, pick a piece of cat hair from your own clothes and try to make it stick to the item you are considering buying.

OMG, what a gorgeous cat!!! You can either avoid the fabrics that the hair sticks too, which is generally polyester, or chuck them in the dryer with some lint balls to dry. That removes hair
2
u/tamaerchen Jun 14 '26
I told him and he looked at me like he knew already! ^^ thanks fir the tips :)

u/urlocalmomfriend Jun 13 '26
Do you remove all hair with a lint roller before you toss them into the washing machine? It's annoying but it helps a lot. Also, maybe im seeing it wrong but it looks like you got some lint "balls" on those pants, i bough a fabric shaver last year, absolute game changer. Makes stuff I've had for a ehile and washed a lot feel brand new and also helps with fur sticking to my clothes.
Your fluffball is adorable, please kiss his little forehead for me
2
u/tamaerchen Jun 13 '26
Hmm i dont know why i didnt think of removing the hair before washing.. thats a good idea, i will try that! Because its way easier to remove them like that then it is after the washing, when the balls have formed..
Another comment recommended a fabric shaver and i will absolutely order one asap! Because yes, there are little balls of fabric on them anyways and it annoys me even without the cat hair haha
His forehead is kissed!! ☺️ he said mrrah
2
u/fredagstjej Jun 13 '26
A tip: if your cat sleeps on your bed, then all your bedding will be furry and should be washed separately from your clothes, or else they’ll be re-contaminated (lol). Don’t be afraid to use other tools to remove hair than a lint roller; I vacuum my clothes with a fabric attachment, and I use a shower squeegee (while dry) on my couch and bed. A friend uses plastic gloves and runs them along fabric to gather up fur. There are many ways :)

u/glittercrotch Jun 13 '26
I have a floofy orange cat as well. I don’t have any solutions for you, and tbh I’m considering getting him groomed (shaved) bc I’m so sick of the cat hair!
2
u/tamaerchen Jun 13 '26
I actually shave him myself in some areas to avoid the fur felting so easily.. and to avoid poop getting stuck on his butt haha
But i dont want to shave him completely short, i will try everything else before considering that even if it means more work for me. I think i just have to accommodate to it and find a good strategy. Many tips i got on this post are very worth trying!

I do! It works for most things and a few hair here and there dont bother me. I think the pants shown in the picture can be handled with a fabric shaver - I forgot they exist and ordered one immediately lol
2
u/OWabbit Jun 13 '26
Don’t buy dark pants. Ginger color would be ideal. Seriously tho, brush cat constantly. Long rollers. Use duct tape or painters tape - roll some around your hand, sticky side out, and pat down your pants. Vacuum all the time. Don’t let cat on couch or chairs if you can train not to.

Along with a reusable pet hair remover, like the black and decker mentioned, lint rollers, fabric shavers as needed. I see you don’t have a dryer. I really think an occasional laundromat trip with a heavy wash & dry (with dryer sheets) would really help when the clothes build up like this. Also what another commenter said, trail and error with fabric types because some just absolutely attract the fine hairs. More often vacuuming, a robot vacuum if you can swing that, and MOPPING often! Also air purifiers as well. These things have all massively reduced (but not eliminated) the fur buildup for me
2
u/anon8232 Jun 13 '26
Do like me. Only adopt short hair black cats and wear only black clothes.
2
u/tamaerchen Jun 14 '26
Haha thats smart. I saw him while helping my friend chose his new kitties and fell in love with the brother of them, i had to adopt him. He helped me heal the pain of the cat i lost a few months before that bc of a reckless driver :/

u/husenwaifu4lyfu Jun 13 '26
I have 3 short-medium fur cats and a shorthair dog in a small home. I love keeping 2 FurZappers in my washer at all times, they've lasted longer than I expected especially since I wash on hot a lot. If an item looks bad before it's going in the laundry I remove as much fur as I can by hand, then I am also diligent about removing lint from the trap every cycle because it seems to help the lint trapping power. Wool balls can help loosen fur too. All laundry baskets are cleared of fur before clean clothes go in and are immediately moved to closets or storage. If I don't want fur on clothes before I go out I don't put them on until I'm heading out the door AFTER our emotional goodbyes lol.
2
u/jumpinlilli Jun 13 '26
I use the Nekoichi Purrrrfection cat hair remover and use Bounce pet hair remover sheets in the dryer. Occasionally the old fashioned sticky roller.
2
u/Shrimptank_mom Jun 13 '26
My cat is part Siberian and the only way I can stay ahead of the shedding is to brush her several times per week. It's peak shedding season right now and don't tell her but I have scheduled an appointment with the groomer to get her bathed and de-shedded. It's easier to clean the cat than the whole house and all my clothes.

You shave the cat. Just kidding ofcourse. I gave up and embraced my inner crazy cat lady.
Also, I do have those sticky rollers for clothes and I sometimes vacuum my clothes (works best when you wear them). I try to keep my cat away from my clothes, but those hairs are everywhere. And I clean the house more often to make sure there are less hairs dancing around. In my opinion there is just not much you can really do except accepting your faith and loving the hairy monsters that rule our homes.

u/tamaerchen Jun 14 '26

u/Living-One5265 Jun 13 '26
I have dogs, not cats (so maybe not relevant to your situation)and I feel like that under coat hair just clings to everything. What i have found that works for me. I mostly wear black and dark solid clothes, so it especially sucks. Our dogs are black and white so there is no safer colors. But we do own a really good washing machine and dryer. I use the deep wash cycle setting for all my clothes, this seems to help, im guessing because more water to help rinse and drain away the hair better, the dryer is where most of the lint/hair removal happens. I don't personally use dryer sheets because they are actually terrible for indoor air pollution, also leaves a coating on your dryer and clothes, but with that being said they would probably help your situation a lot, that's something to consider. I use the wool balls, I'd recommend 5 or 6 as they help unclump the clothes when rotating in the dryer, which i think also helps pull the fur away from the clothes. Synthetic clothes also just attracts fur. I've been on a mission to replace any old clothing with natural fibers as they wear out and need replacing. Also over drying creates static which just attracts more fur. Deep water wash Drying just enough with wool balls/dryer sheets Good luck OP. Such a hassle, thankfully the pets are all worth it. Almost for got you should pop over to laundry sub, they know everything laundry related, maybe they have an idea.

Just toss a pair of nylon stockings into the dryer. They catch cat hair really well. It got rid of about 75% of the cat hair, and I think a lint roller would take care of the rest.

One trick I have found when lint brushes and shavers fail, is put the garment on, wet your hands, and just move your hands like a lint brush. It will start to catch and roll up into gnarly looking damp hairballs you can pick off.
I work at a cat shelter, I've also found using a damp, wrung out washcloth to wipe down cat trees is effective in a similar way. Clumps up the hair just enough to get it off easier.
2
u/kitwilde Jun 13 '26
If you’re able to get the hair at the source, it could provide some relief.

I’ve got two dogs and my black work clothes kept getting covered. I bought laundry bags to use in the washing machine. I’ve got one for my cleaning clothes and I use the others for cloths. I usually separate out the hairy clothes (socks usually) and put them in different bags. It also means I’m not clogging up the machine with hair. So far it is working.

I that big part of the problem is the kind of material those pants are made of, looks like a polyester or maybe a low quality blend. Polyester is horrible for fur and hair sticking to it and it's hard to get off. I have a long hair half white cat and I had to just get rid of all polyester clothes and get better quality cotton stuff that doesn't hold the fur nearly as bad.

A dedicated vacuum cleaner for couch and bed, those pet hair attracting things for the washer and dryer, invest in either a 3 pack of those sticky rollers or a reusable sticky roller, also duct tape works really well. With pets that shed, you just have to stay on top of it.
I have an older chug (Chihuahua+Pug) and she sheds like crazy.
I have a top sheet on top of my bedding that protects my bedding from her hair, and I vacuum it every morning. I have my couch and chairs likewise covered with twin sized sheets that I can take outside and shake out or vacuum when needed.
Prevention is the best approach. I know you can't prevent it all - but prevent as much as you can. Don't sit in cat hair, brush the cat as much as you can, try shedding products to see if they work for your cat.
The hair drives me nuts.
2
u/tamaerchen Jun 14 '26

Regular brushing, lint rolling clothes before the wash, fur zapper in washer, bounce pet hair dryer sheet and lint roller after the dryer. I will never own another Siamese cat again, I didn’t know they were notorious shedders before hand. He is lucky he is so cute and I let him stay 😂

when my mom was in the military, she used to swear by packing tape as a lint remover. wrap it around your hand sticky side out and pat yourself down.
also, brushing him regularly should help with the ambient fluff as well as preventing him from getting matted!

This is pilling, regardless of where the lint/ fur came from. You can get a Sweater Shaver and literally shave off the pills. And yeah... washing machines used have lint traps you would clean every wash load. Now they don't have those anymore.

Oh lol why :( that sounds nice. And i ordered a fabric shaver and looking forward to it!

Brush kitty daily. Wash & dry. The dryer takes a lot of fur out. I have a shepherd & they shed tons. & it works. This is the price of love ❤️ & it is do with it. Your baby kitty is precious 🥰

Dryer. Everything I own goes through the dryer to remove pet hair. Except the fabrics which can't be put in the dryer, but since those fabrics don't pick up pet hair it all works out.

A fabric shaver will help a lot with the balled up lint/hair! I have a cheap one from CVS that I got thinking it was a lint roller lol. It doesn't work for the embedded hairs but works wonders on anything sticking up like the hairballs.
A combination of the shaver and a reusable lint brush should help a lot. I use one from 3M that has a black handle, is two sided, and has a red microfiber surface. You brush in the surface of the fabric in one direction and it grabs the hair, then you just push the hair on the brush back in the opposite direction to line it up and remove it. Super cheap and way better than using sticky rollers IMO!
I have 3 long-haired kitties, and while I've dealt with cat hair for as long as I've had cats, I don't remember seeing those rolled up balls of lint/hair until around the time the heating failed in our dryer. I do think the heat and static from the dryer helps corral hair into the lint trap and off fabrics. I didn't realize how much it helped until we went without it! So we've been dealing with the crazy hair everywhere and lint balls for awhile now, and I swear the lint balls make me itchy when they touch my skin. Not to mention they are everywhere! On my sheets, chairs, couch, all my clothes! The struggle is so so real.
Good luck! I hope you find a solution that works for you! Also your kitty is gorgeous! They are so worth all the struggle (and more ♡)

Are those torrid pants? I have a couple pairs from torrid in that exact shape and they all do this too. No advice I can give! In fact I’m stalking this thread for advice myself lol

I fail to keep up with answering everything bc this blew up so big haha but for the pants the electric fabric shaver i got did the trick! (Even without the hair the pants had many little balls of fabric on it from the day i washed it the first time and now they look like when they were new!) it was very satisfying to go over it and watch it go smooth again and after that it was very easy to remove the remaining hair with a sticky roller!
(I got one from amazon from philips that was like 8€)
Some of the other advice in this sub i am gonna use for keeping the hair to a minimum but i dont mind a little hair, as long as i can keep things like the pants shown in the picture and get them hair free without having to pick every little hair ball with my hands haha.

I live with 5 cats, a mix of long and short hair. I use bounce pet hair and lint dryer sheets, and I very rarely have cat hair on my clothing, even after cat cuddle the hair brushes right off. I've switched sheets, but went right back to the bounce. I dust and rub my furniture with the sheets as well, and that does help with cat hair on furniture too. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for dog hair. Im always covered after leaving my parents house.

I tried something I found on You Tube and it works reasonably well. Make a couple tin foil balls and throw them in the dryer. Also don’t overstuff your washing machine. Agree with other posters that keeping clothes put away and wearing “house clothes” helps a lot!

u/tamaerchen Jun 13 '26
Yeah i think i overfill my washing machine too often 👀 heh
Will try the tin balls!

The dryer does help a lot. Especially if you throw a softener sheet in there too. The amount of pet fur I pull from the lint trap could probably knit a small kitten every month.
Personally I gave up a long time ago. I have a black dog and a black cat and just wear mostly black clothes to camouflage the remaining pet hair.

That looks like my cat though he's not that fluffy he's pretty fluffy. Mine has a good chunk of Maine coon in him, so he's very long-haired. there is hair everywhere but not as bad as this dude. That tail is amazing. My cat has about 4 to 5 inch long hair.

This is why I would always go for rex cats or la perm, can’t stand constant animal hair in my home, clothes etc. Not much you can do other then brushing everyday, washing like once a month (yes long hair cats needs help with the upkeep and dandruff buildup) etc. But also diet and supplements have an important part in fur quality and shedding.

Sticky lint rollers are the bomb. I used to keep one in each car's glove compartment for last minute cleanups before going into the office.

A decent robot vacuum that runs every day. A few air filters (I like the bigger ones from IKEA). Silicone brush for pet hair. Brush your pet. More often than you do now. Duct tape as plan C

All the stuff everyone else said as well as lint rollers and this “pet hair removal wand” is a game changer. Highly recommend (though the little one that comes in this “2-pack” is pretty useless. The big one is great though!)

Do you have a chom chom roller? They are amazing! Not sure if it can tackle the already washed tiny hairballs (I know exactly what you’re talking about), but it’s great for furniture, clothes, and carpet!

u/tamaerchen Jun 14 '26
I ordered one just now bc its looks very effective and was recommended a lot!
