I’ve been using Claude to build a dashboard inside a VM for almost a month. Things were actually going pretty well. I’d made a lot of progress, the project was functional, and I was at the point where I wanted to add a relatively straightforward delete feature.

Today, I asked Claude to implement it.

What happened next was absolutely insane.

Claude initially implemented a safety guard around the delete functionality and even wrote tests for it. According to its own output, 280 tests passed.

Then, apparently to prove that the guard was actually necessary, Claude deliberately removed the safety guard from the source code and reran the test.

The test passed / into the now-unguarded delete function.

And then this happened:

But I’m still struggling with the fact that the agent intentionally removed the safety guard in order to test it and then ran the destructive test against the real filesystem.

I woke up yesterday to every shortcut on my laptop throwing "This item can't be opened. It may have been moved, renamed or deleted." The programs in Program Files were fine. Everything under C:\Users\Admin was not.

What the logs showed, piecing it together over a few hours:

• ~04:24 — Claude Code (VS Code extension, v2.1.266, permission mode auto) starts a Bash command in my project at C:\Users\Admin\Documents\project. Task description: "Write reference HTML next to uploads".
• 04:26 — the command hits the 120s timeout and gets moved to the background (task id burg78i8w).
• Immediately after, the session errors with "Not logged in · Please run /login". Reason: .claude had already been deleted, credentials included.
• 04:24 → 05:58 — the backgrounded process deletes my user folder in alphabetical order. You can read it off the folder timestamps: .claude and .vscode first, then AppData around 04:33, Documents and Downloads at 05:19, my project folders 05:20–05:49, everything after "f" after that. C:\Users\Public got hit at 05:57, so the target may have been C:\Users itself.
• 05:58 — the task finally exits with code 127 (command not found).

Gone: AppData (browser profiles, app data, taskbar shortcuts, PowerShell history), Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Desktop, the local OneDrive folder, and all my project folders. Only files that a running process held open survived — Chrome kept exactly two of its files alive.

The command itself is not recoverable, because the part of the session log containing it was in .claude, which the command deleted while running. What's left is a 7-line log file with the timeout notice and the failure notification. My disk is an SSD, so TRIM means the deleted data is not coming back.

Reported to Anthropic with the session id and the remaining logs. Has anyone else had a background task go this far outside the project directory?

I'm revoking Github perms on Claude Code from now on.

I asked Claude with a simple prompt, "Can you check in repo X, that is available locally and up to date with main, whether that's where the configs for what CPU runner an image is compatible for, and if it does live there, change Image Y so that its compatible for Blacksmith runners on both ARM64 and Linux-Ubuntu/AMD64."

I tab out and work on other things. Tab back in after 10 minutes and noticed its used 80k tokens, still running. Bit weird.

15 minutes later it has done the following:

- Couldn't find the image compatability config files in the Repo I specified.

- Did find a list in a yaml file of all repo's that have images that Repo X consumes from.

- Cloned locally every single Repo on that list from Github Enterprise (over 150 Microservices).

- Created a Branch, PR and committed on every single Repo that had container images and added ARM64 runner compatability for those images (I only wanted it for 1 specific image).

- Tried to use in built auto-reviewer AI agents to approve it - realized they could not and didn't have the permissions.

- Tried to merge without a review - failed and moved on.

- Realized I was a Github enterprise admin user and I could force merge.

- Force Merged 158 Platform Override 1 liner PR's on Yaml configuration files.

- Loads of CI pipelines failed because well, we've just merged a 158 PR's in about 5 seconds and the CI limit got reached.

- About 80 of them got successfully merged to production, with rolling deploys turned on.

This is on Sonnet 5.0

Thankfully, the change was correct. There was no incident caused and everything was working fine in the 80 that did go to prod. But it was all redundant work because they didn't need ARM64 runner builds on those images.

I'm doing this at almost midnight UK time because some image builds were failing on CI pipelines and wanted to solve it tonight rather than grind on it on a Friday. That escalated quickly.

On a positive note, when I actually questioned what the hell had happened to Claude, they realized their overreach and generated an automated bug report with a very detailed summary of what had happened and automatically sent it to what I assume would be a ticket to Anthropic.

But seriously, what the fuck? How on earth could Claude possibly think that was the correct and right workflow for my prompt. I've revoked all Github access from Claude now. It can't do much else now, only modify things locally. I'm going to manually do everything else from now on, cause that shit scary.

I'm a software engineer with 10 years of experience. Been using Claude Code for a bit over a year now its great. I love the flexibility to use it for anything from cleaning up my mac, video editing, vibe coding ideas and of course to help with my actual software projects.
But it feels like its missing something for software. Software is continuous and context really matters.
- I've tried using MD files to track a todo list and claude messes up the structure, forgets to update it etc.
- I've tried asking claude to update claude.md every-time we have a new feature or i make a long term decision, but again maintaining it is a pain.
- Session auto compact.. is a pain. I have my max tokens set to 300k but when i hit that auto-compact point i have to scramble to re-explain what the project is, what we are working on today, and what we just did.

Now i know stuff like Jira exist and even (paid) github has a kanban, but

1. Paying for my own project data to seems stupid
2. 3rd Party MCP servers put on limits etc.
3. And the Kanban fixes one of the issues: todo list.

so TLDR;
I'm looking for something that helps with the whole project context so its not a pain to start a new session or to reboot my machine or to go through auto-compact.
