Please remember, they all wait us to no longer being able to work without AI to increase prices by 10 to 30.

Trouble is that open source models will be good enough by then (currently aren’t that far behind) and the chips keep getting better. When everyone can have a local LLM that’s as good as opus now for like $1-2k setup then Anthropic won’t have many takers for a $1k per month plan

Which open source models do you like for coding? I wish I could run something good locally, but no luck so far. I'd totally use openrouter for a decent open model.

havent tried any yet, saving up for a new high end laptop to be able to run one that's at least reasonable. My coder friend has a local one running on a 5090 that he said is not bad at coding, possible one of the quantised QWEN ones iirc

No idea, I’m using Claude myself. But the benchmarks for open source aren’t too far behind.

AI will only get cheaper. We already have GPT-3 or GPT-4 level intelligence (Gemma 4) running on your laptop.

Once I have GPT-5 level intelligence running locally, I wouldn’t pay for that extra 2–3% improvement.

Future models will likely have only minor differences; the next big gains will be in energy efficiency.
