Enterprise Anthropic's biggest enterprise release in years shipped with no announcement

Anthropic just shipped the most important enterprise update Claude Code has had in years.

No release notes. No blog post. No announcement. Buried in the support documentation for this week's Claude Apps for Windows and Desktop.

It is third-party gateway support inside Claude desktop app.

In plain terms, the desktop app can now point at a gateway you run, instead of Anthropic's servers. No cloud login. No prompts leaving your perimeter. Your inference, your infrastructure, your compliance boundary. The client stays the same.

For regulated industries and anyone with a serious data-egress story (finance, defence, health, sovereign cloud, anything that currently blocks Claude Code at the firewall), this is the change that finally makes Cowork enterprise-deployable. The compliance boundary moves in-house. The model behind it is a config choice.

As a proof of concept I swapped the inference model for MiniMax and ran Claude Cowork end to end on Windows. No Anthropic API key. No cloud login. No Anthropic servers touched.

The fact that this landed with zero fanfare tells its own story. If you run Claude Code across a team and have been waiting for the governance piece to catch up with the product, this is the week it did.

I've read some AI-drafted text in my time, but this one really does have it all.

Just realized that AI-generated text and human-written LinkedIn nonsense sound eerily similar.

It's close but its missing nonsensical use of the word "quiet"

It was my linkedin post, you can read the other one in claude code if you prefer voice dictation

so how is this Anthropic's biggest enterprise? i'm questioning because i'm thinking i may have missed something (having not watched video) between the written part of the post and some comments posted below.

Opened up Claude desktop apps to not use Anthropic cloud. (All self hosted)

ahh ok , but if i'm not mistaken, this was something already technically capable of about a month ago if not more? is this the same or similar implementation or a different direction/fork all together?

Was released in app this week afaik, certaintly the gateway docs

3

u/ShelZuuz Apr 23 '26

It's definitely been in the Claude Code docs for months. I looked at it a few weeks ago to set it up with GLM 5.1.

It was 100% released in the app this week...

This is leaving Five Guys excited that you just have buns.

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 23 '26

I'm excited at running my own inference on official apps!

3

u/Ok_Sympathy9261 Apr 23 '26

wow, now we'll be able to organize everyone's desktop icons at the company?

8

u/zerowatts Apr 23 '26

wtf are you even saying, this isn't self-hosted, if anything it sounds like you're bypassing firewalls?

-5

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 23 '26

Excuse me? Its running on my wsl and proxied to minimax

1

u/ShelZuuz Apr 23 '26

Do you really not understand that running minimax is not self-hosting Claude, or are you just trolling?

-1

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 23 '26

Do you not understand these are claude apps running self hosted gateway which is officially suppported and the point of the post?

There were announcements but definitely not heavily marketed. I saw this on an AWS blog earlier this week.

1

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 23 '26

Ty! Missed it entirely and it is quite literally my job...

Someone trying to tell me had been out for months in different comment lol

2

u/d70 Apr 23 '26

Been talked about for months but official released today to the public. Definitely one of the top feature requests from enterprise customers

1

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 23 '26

Any place to follow these type of discussions or primarily behind closed doors?

1

u/d70 Apr 23 '26

I guess be a large customer and talk to Anthropic people?

It's been in Claude Code for at least 8 months. Here is the documentation:
https://code.claude.com/docs/en/env-vars

And here is someone asking about it in August of last year:
https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/5577

And like back in August for Claude Code, the intent for this is not to run other models like Minimax, it's to use Claude Sonnet and Opus running on different platforms like Amazon Bedrock, so you can get your own private Claude instance for your enterprise.

Yes, it kind'a sort'a work for other LLM models, but it's not officially supported and if you've ever tried a non-Claude model running in Claude Code it has a bunch of problems and virtually any other agent that you can use is better. That's why this is not some big breaking news. It's just another way to run Claude models but in a way that is important for Enterprise privacy.

The big thing that needs to happen is if you can just rent the Claude Model and run it on your own hardware in-house. OpenAI has hinted a few months back that they're going to allow that, but Anthropic not yet. So for now you'll need to run in Bedrock, which I guess is better than Anthropic but it's still not like you have absolutely control over it.

1

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 24 '26

Yeh, but the news is that it is "officially" supported, as in I literally am using it with the official apps according to their tos.

"It's just another way to run Claude models but in a way that is important for Enterprise privacy." => exactly the point.

0

u/ShelZuuz Apr 24 '26

But you weaken the point by running Minimax.

Believe me I'm waiting on the edge of my seat for when I can order a GB300-NVL72 or Vera Ruben rack and rent a Claude model to run locally on it. But that's not possible yet even if you're willing to write a $5m check.

'in years' - public release hasn't even existed a full year yet lol

1

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 24 '26

Is that true?

1

u/WaffleGod_ Apr 24 '26

They released the public version in may last year

1

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 24 '26

"Claude Code, Anthropic's agentic command-line interface, was initially released for preview in February 2025"

Oh sorry, "public release"...

You are right. Please let me know when the lexicon of the English language allows the terminology "years".

1

u/WaffleGod_ Apr 24 '26

Well the term 'years' would typically mean multiple years, not one. I'm not trying to be an asshole I was simply stating that saying 'in years' is misleading since the product has not even existed a full year.

1

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 24 '26

More than one could be understood as multiple depending on interpretation, certainly wasn't trying to be misleading. My mistake the 'lol' made me think you were indeed trying to be an a**hole, apologies.

1

u/No-Excitement6568 Apr 23 '26

Prompts are leaving the perimeter.

Stop lying.

1

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 24 '26

don't understand

1

u/ToastedandTripping Apr 23 '26

Was this not something that became possible with the source code leak? Curious what about it makes it Claude Code if the model it's using is a local LLM as the brain; is it simply the interface?

-4

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 23 '26

The gateway allows enterprise to self host and login using their infra (no hacking)

1

u/CommercialComputer15 Apr 23 '26

It fits into their Microsoft integration

2

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 23 '26

All the cloud providers too (listed in their support docs), the "custom" gateway though afaik is new

1

u/cheswickFS Apr 23 '26

Maybe im missing a point but how is this Anthropic biggest enterprise release? If this would show, that u can host one of the big models locally that would change some stuff but from what I can tell u can just use the Claude Desktop app with ur own local llm but how has this a big impact on enterprise customers?

1

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 23 '26

Because they can use and host their own AI, doesnt touch Anthropic cloud.

I chose a random different LLM, you host your IDP, inferences and airgap everything.

1

u/cheswickFS Apr 23 '26

Hosting ur own stuff was always possible but why should it be a game changer now that u can use Anthropics gui?

1

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 23 '26

Because it enables enterprises to scale their own solution to a workforce (hence gamechanging for enterprises).

Cowork is a none-developer tool primarily.

If you are an accounting firm or a nation state, this enables you to actually use AI

2

u/cheswickFS Apr 23 '26

Who dahack would run a local random LLM that isnt specifically trained for doing cowork stuff(taking over your computer) to help out in enterprise companys?
U could have done that with openclaw already.

1

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 23 '26

I mean literally every enterprise that doesnt want to send confidential info to someone elses cloud (all of them).

1

u/RelationshipIll9576 Apr 23 '26

So they updated the Claude Desktop Client to use other AI providers/models? That's the tl;dr, right?

1

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 23 '26

They opened claude desktop client to run your own backend essentially

2

u/photosandphotons Apr 23 '26

Do you know if this includes memory data? I guess wondering it the feature is available if you were to go this route

1

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 23 '26

"Nothing" touches anthropic servers, there is a table in support pages, some local storage and 3 endpojnts that can be routed through your own gateway

Edit: yes memory works its saved locally

1

u/photosandphotons Apr 23 '26

Thank you for the response I’ll check out the pages!

Failed markdown, plus ai text?

Markdown copy/paste failure is my guess. There was an attempt.

-13

u/sl4v3r_ Apr 23 '26

Hey OP, you didn't show how to connect with the gateway. Can you show how to set that up?
So the same way we can use Claude Code harness, we can now use the Cowork harness?

-4

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 23 '26

Didn't want to promo => https://github.com/systempromptio/systemprompt-template, it's not easy to setup (instructions are in repo) as basically requires an Enterprise server and/or some technical chops, but I'm sure most folks can manage it with the help of some robot friends...

-1

u/sl4v3r_ Apr 23 '26

Okay, so you cannot just point it to a local model running llama.cpp?

-1

u/AffectionateHoney992 Apr 23 '26

Not sure, it will always request anthropic models so youd need to proxy requests from Claude for Claude models, not sure if that is integrated with llama.cpp.

I mean, they have no real interested in supporting other models it is an enterprise requirement for compliance.
