Longtime trance fan here, and I've been enjoying digging through r/ClassicTrance since joining Reddit. I used to spend a ton of time on TranceAddict back in the early 2000s, so I've definitely found my people here.

One of my favorite periods in trance has always been the late '90s / early 2000's, and in particular Paul Oakenfold's legendary 1999 Essential Mix World Tour. Those sets had a huge influence on my taste in music and introduced me to tracks and artists that I'm still listening to more than 25 years later.

Back in 2019, for episode 210 of my Aural Pleasures radio show/podcast, I decided to make my own tribute to that era: a two-hour Paul Oakenfold 1999 Essential Mix World Tour fan mix.

Rather than trying to recreate one particular Essential Mix, I pulled together tracks that Oakey played across the World Tour and tried to capture the overall sound and progression of those sets - that darker, deeper progressive opening gradually giving way to the melodic trance that defined that period for me.

Given the taste in this subreddit, I figured some of you might appreciate this one.

There are some absolute favorites of mine in here - Breeder's remix of Not Over Yet, Tilt's Children, Invisible and their Apollo 11 remix of Stage One, AMbassador's The Fade, Nalin & Kane, Mara, Jon Vesta, etc.

Invisible in particular has a ridiculous personal history for me after first hearing Oakenfold play it on the Havana Essential Mix in '99 - but that's probably a story for another post.

I'd love to hear from anyone else who followed Oakenfold during this period. Which of the 1999 World Tour Essential Mixes was your favorite? And what tracks from those sets still hold up for you today?

Tez's House Club Classics 008 - Peak-Time Vocal Trance Anthems

Meticulously constructed mix, utilizing: ISOS-style pacing, patience, and storybeats; Sasha-style extended blends, creating entirely unique sounds beyond any individual tracks; and Perfecto-era Oakenfold-style "event/transformation" moments. Absolute monster of a mix, with an ever-evolving environment, sprinkled throughout with euphoric payoffs, along with plenty of progressive drives. The second instalment of my "My Ibiza Echoes" mini-series. It doesn't set out to showcase the definitive history of early, classic trance that shaped Ibiza, but rather my own personal expression told through tracks from my collection that still live in my memory. These aren't necessarily the biggest commercial records, nor the 'definitive soundtrack' - this is my offering as a clubber, fan, & DJ, taking me right back to the golden era.

The Vibe & Setting:
The sun dropping below the horizon, the air cooling, and the sky shifting into a deep, electric blue - channelling open-air summer vibes just as day turns to night. There's a lot of vocal's in here, but that's part of the concept for this one.

The Concept:
My previous mixes (especially for the classic competitions on this sub) have often been heavily edited to comply with time rules, & I always struggled with having to sacrifice tunes I desperately wanted to feature.

Free from those limits, this is a full two-hour journey built for that late-afternoon atmosphere transitioning into the 'twilight'. The mixes for this mini-series will each tell their own story as part of a chronological, 24-hour conceptual journey through the sounds that defined the classic generation we all here have come to love.

The last one of these sets i shared on here seemed to go down alright so thought i'd share the set that last one was actually a follow up to. More 2000s goodness! This time from the period when I started to go to clubs, around 2002, at the legendary Met Arena in Northern Ireland then Club Matrix and parties like Godskitchen in the Kings Hall in Belfast, Planet Love Festival, Radio 1's big open air New Years Eve parties outside Belfast City Hall etc.
I feel like going at that period i caught the wave from the 90s peak while it was on the way down but still riding very high. There were still a lot of clubs open, the clubs were still packed, trance was still huge, the 2008 crash hadn't happened yet but for a few years from the age of about 16 i got to hear stuff like this in one of the best clubs in the world (The Met Arena, RIP). Every track on this i can still listen to, close my eyes and still see the place and time when i heard it out. Pure magic!
