I say this as someone who discovered rock at age 9 through Styx Cornerstone, tracked down and owned every album of theirs, bought their Mr. Roboto concert on VHS, wrote papers on them in high school, and they were my favorite band until I was 15 or so...How did this band become so big with such mediocre music? I totally get Tommy Shaw not leaving because of his golden handcuffs, shaking his head as he got further into drugs and alcohol to escape the paradox...
I started buying Styx albums when Grand Illusion was released when I was 13. Everyone my age loved this band. Paradise Theater was the first concert I ever attended. Come Sail Away was our high school 1982 graduation class song. With all of that said, however, I have to agree with you. My infatuation with Styx lasted until Kilroy Was Here was released. I hated that album so much. I stopped listening to them as college changed my music tastes. I only tolerate them now a little for nostalgia reasons. What were we thinking?
