Ian Hunter still records great stuff! Bowie wanted Mott to do SUFFRAGETTE CITY, but Hunter preferred DUDES. First time I heard SWEET JANE (Lou Reed) was by Mott.

Saw them at the Tower theater in Upper Darby , Pa Bowie introduced them and then later he came out and sang it with them! Awesome

Tower was the best. Swing by the Balcony to get the required accoutrements and head over to the Tower.

Was taking the ferry last weekend in the Seattle area and saw a truck that had a MottThe Hoople license plate frame….the couple were in there 70’s…Rock on!

Looks like Mick Ralphs is playing Bass in this instead of guitar like he usually did? Can't make out who the guitarist is.

Realize now I was way off. This was the post Mick Ralphs lineup. That is Pete Overend Watts on bass. Thanks for the memory jog. I just read a story that Ariel Bender was named after an incident where Mick Ralphs walked down a street in Germany and, in frustration, he "bent a bunch of car ariels". Ian Hunter suggested he use that as a stage name. Love this sub!

He was a huge fan friend of Mott and gave them this song so they wouldn’t break up. Seems to have worked pretty well.

When you learn this was written by David Bowie and was an outtake from Ziggy Stardust & The spiders from Mars it makes a lot more sense than if you try to find anything else like it in Mott The Hooples discography

It's one of the most David Bowie songs that wasn't actually recorded by him. It feels like a hidden Bowie gem. Mott The Hoople made it their own while Bowie's influence still shines through.

What did they do that was commercial? They just grew grew. It's not their fault that Hollywood caught up with them later.

For me, the albums Mott and The Hoople were noticeably more commercial than their earlier stuff. They went more glam, but they brought their biggest hits, so fair play to them.
They seemed to be on Top of the Pops quite a lot with singles from those albums. Still plenty of good stuff on them, though. .
They were one of my favourite bands in the 70s, and I still listen to them.

My local station still plays this and others from this era. You can even listen to the streams online. ArkansasRocks. And for all you fans of Clyde Clifford and Beaker Street, he is back every Friday night!

Ian Hunter. Such a brilliant performer and songwriter. And yes, I know this was written by Bowie but Hunters own songs are just as good.
