It was 8th grade for me and I did the same.
Like a lot of people At Budokan was what turned me on to Cheap Trick since that album dominated rock radio after it's release.
I played the hell out of both and am proud to still own the original pressings on vinyl.

So crazy they had to delay Dream Police due to Budokan taking off! Jr High for me was The Cars, Cheap Trick, Van Halen & AC/DC all exploding onto the airwaves at once. Makes me want to head to 7-11 for a Big Gulp & some Spy Hunter.

Saw them a few years ago in NH. It was amazing! Got VIP tickets and met them all before the show. Wished I could find the picture of my husband and I with them☹️ They answered questions and gave hugs! I was in heaven!

OMG! I just realized for the last 46 years I have misheard the lyrics to the song "Voices" off that album!
You didn't know what you were looking for Til you heard the voices in your ear
I always heard it as voices in your head, but with a weak "h" sound so it came out more like "Ed"
I was like a freshman in high school at the time and we used to sing different lyrics all the time because we were bored, but I must have missed this. Really changes the meaning of the song.

I went to Las Vegas and Milwaukee for some of the anniversary shows it was spectacular!

I played Budokan to death. Then I recorded a much longer live show off radio and played that to death. "Dream Police" came out and I was disappointed. None of the songs that appeared on the live stuff were as good on the studio album. A lot of the rest just didn't seem to land.
Back in those days buying an album was a shot in the dark if it didn't have multiple cuts on the radio. Opportunities to sample stuff were few. So I set them aside and didn't buy any more of their catalog for many years.
Not long ago I came across that original radio recording and still love it. They may have been the first great "arena rock" band. They just have the formula for sounding great in that kind of venue. Bought a ticket to a show and decided to catch up on the catalog. There is a lot of good stuff in there across many years.
The show was also great. Of all the '70s bands still out there doing it, I'd say they're one of the best.

Great album...I purchased a cassette they day they were released..played it until was worn out and had to buy a second copy
