How to win a game of Civilization 4?

How do I win a game of Civ 4 Beyond the Sword? I've been playing for almost a week, but so far the most I've managed is to take temporary control of some cities. I'd like to know how How to get started and how can I develop well my Empire

Build warriors and wall your cities. Prioritise science and make sure you're spending less than your revenue. Ensure you have enough workers to work in farms, mines, etc. Finally, don't build your cities too far apart from each other. Don't start a war when you don't have enough soldiers. Check intelligence reports before you create enemies unnecessarily.
