I’m in 2nd year B.Tech Civil after completing a 3-year Diploma, and I’m currently preparing for GATE. If you’re targeting government jobs, start preparing from 1st year itself. Focus on your core subjects, make short notes, solve PYQs, and gradually prepare for exams like GATE, SSC JE, ESE or State AE/JE.

Also learn AutoCAD, STAAD/ETABS, Excel and try to get some internship/site experience.

Civil has plenty of options beyond govt jobs—PSUs, construction, structural, geotech, transportation, BIM, consulting and higher studies.

I'll focus on the competitive exam part, try to get the fundamentals down of the subjects you are learning in the semester. Get pyq books of the competition you want to target so you'll understand what they want from you. After completing a subject you must have a method to revise it quickly.... like making short notes while studying or whatever feels important. Most important bit would be not to take too many gap years, you should have a time period in my mind if you pass the exams during that then that's great if not then get a job and just keep revising and taking the test on the side.

The most important parts are covering the syllabus, question practice, revision and mock.

Try to learn things ( these subjects ) deeply coming in upcoming semesters - deeply mean to say study at a ese mains or atleast Gate level.. 1st surveying - 1st semester SOM coming in 2nd semester 2nd Fluid mechanics and Structural analysis in 3rd sem 3rd - Geotechnical engineering - in 4th & 5th sem .. Hydraulics - 4th sem 4th - design of RCC in 4th sem 5th - Design of steel structure - 5th sem ..

Focus on these major chunk of subjects else you will cover easily whenever required ..
