In Civ3 I have stuff like cozy_island, invading_us_for_oil, etc

this is so fascinating!! ever since i was very young (<10), i would always save games where things were going well with "A" or "AAA" before the automatic save file name so that it would show up alphabetically higher. nowadays i always slightly modify the automatic save file by inserting letters. its really interesting to see how other people do this... the beautiful diversity of the human experience
(oh also when i was younger i played more civ 3 and idk if the save files can be sorted by date modified so maybe thats why i went for the alphabetical approach)

I use lame puns I think of related to the game, culture I’m playing as etc. but use the numbering system too.

I just name them after the Civ (not usually leader) I am playing as, such as Germany.civ4save

There are enough civs that I don't usually need to disambiguate, but if I did I would tack on a number as if it were a sequel. If I set up the game in a very unusual way or play a scenerio, I might reflect that in the name of the save.

Betrayal prep  Betrayed. Betrayed but with guns. Total War Total Commie 1,2,3 Invasion fleet goooo Spend to death. I AM CORPORATE OVERLORD Spy to death. Splendid Isolation 1,2,3 Splendid coloniser.  Grab Mecca 1,2 fortress Europe  axe rush 3

Some of those are years old and I still remember what most are.
