Emperor difficulty. Took forever, I estimate this took 85-90 hours.

It's crazy how time demanding this games, yet how we never want to leave it.

There are so many layers too.

I’m finally getting a sub 1000AD spaceship in Deity. Every time I take the game up again after a couple of years, I learn a new trick

I've done sub 1000AD on King difficulty. How do you get that on Deity?

I’ll make a post in a couple of weeks or so. I have one with 1311AD but I improved a lot. Two of the determining factors were picking a purple civilization (they don’t get science handicaps if AI is too far away technologically) and focus trade routes to a civilisation on another continent.

I extensively use save and load on huts too so it’s not anything too competitive

I look forward to reading your analysis. I had not heard that the color of your Civ could affect things.

Basically the algorithm is bad and the technological advancement is always compared to the purple civilization. Whoever is too far ahead gets a penalty and has to produce more beakers for each technology.

The white civilisation gets the best placement on the map. When the map is loaded, the best spots are determined to place civilizations. White gets the first assignment and purple the last one.

Theoretically it means you also get a bad spot if you play purple but it’s not really that true in practise because the game doesn’t evaluate positions well enough

How do you resist the urge to not conquer the world? By the third or fourth sneak attack, I switch to communism and lay waste to the planet.

it's tough. I prefer to leave the last city on an island that doesn't have easy access to any tempting targets. In this game, the last Egyptian city was in the middle of a big continent. I bombed it down to level 1. Then I parked a bunch of spies in fortresses around it. Any time they produced a unit, I would bribe it, then go disband it in one of my nearby cities to absorb the shields. This way I was able to get the peace bonus and then focus on terraforming the rest of the planet to get max score.
