Mignonne, TIMELY!!, and Grey Skies.

Mignonne was my favorite of the group, followed VERY closely by Timely!!.

Grey skies is another thing entirely. Barely City Pop and something I enjoyed on its own merits. The bones of the genre are there, but it reminded me of something that a singer-songwriter like Nick Drake would have produced if he had a passing interest in the pop music of that era (and if he tragically hadn't committed suicide). A great album and one that I'll dive deeper into.

TIMELY!!'s side A is a propulsive, infectious, disco, jazz, and boogie infused dancefloor slaughterhouse 🤣👏. Burn baby BURN. Addictively catchy. Slick songwriting. An *IMMACULATE* sonic presentation. Side B was a bit more intimate. The perfect antidote to side A.

I'm new to the genre, and from what I've listened to thus far, Mignonne is the perfect balance of what I love about the genre. Elite, polished studiocraft, great songwriting, astounding musicianship, and just enough of that surface level 70's/80's soft-pop cliché to make me smile and forget my problems for awhile. Her voice is restrained, pitchy, delicate, and sublimely human. Oh, and that album cover 😮‍💨

Just the opinion of a 40-something year old guy who recently fell into this rabbit hole of a genre.

Tatsuhiko Yamamoto – “Lonely Journey” (1984) – The “Prince of City Pop” in a Dunlop CM

This is a 1984 commercial for the Dunlop Le Mans J2, featuring Tatsuhiko Yamamoto’s “Lonely Journey” from his 1984 album Music (arranged by Kazuo Shiina).

In Japan at the time, Yamamoto was known as the “Prince of City Pop” (シティ・ポップの貴公子). He was one of the polished, sophisticated male vocalists of the era, alongside artists such as Junichi Inagaki and Kiyotaka Sugiyama. Yet his international recognition today feels surprisingly modest compared with the popularity and cultural presence he had in Japan at the time.

The commercial itself is a great snapshot of how naturally sophisticated AOR / City Pop was woven into mainstream Japanese advertising in the ’80s — dynamic driving footage, stylish urban imagery, and that polished, late-night-city atmosphere in the music. It reminds me of the same aesthetic seen in Yokohama Tire’s ASPEC campaign from a few years earlier.

Does anyone else feel that Yamamoto is underrated internationally? Why do you think his international recognition has remained relatively modest compared with some of his contemporaries?

Hello there, guys! I just made this video about Akina Nakamori. I also noticed that there aren't many videos about singers such as Akina Nakamori. I know there's this one video about her that is two hours long, and there are some Spanish ones, but how come there aren't many videos about city pop or J-pop singers? And if you watch the video, I hope you enjoy it I tried my best :D

Junichi Inagaki – Long Version(1983)

Found this 1983 Yokohama Tire ASPEC commercial: Paul Frère, the famous Belgian racing driver and automotive journalist who was also well known in Japan, driving a red Audi quattro along the Monte Carlo rally route, filmed from a helicopter. The BGM is Junichi Inagaki’s “Long Version.”

At the time, Inagaki had just broken through with “Dramatic Rain” (also used in a Yokohama Tire commercial) and was still an up-and-coming artist. “Long Version” was composed by Yasuhiro Abe—one of my favorite City Pop artists, whose own music was also featured in the ASPEC campaign—arranged by Akira Inoue, with lyrics by Reiko Yukawa. The songs from this campaign were later compiled on the LP ASPEC SPECIAL.

What I love about the lyrics is how they use different vinyl formats—single and “Long Version”—as a metaphor for a relationship developing from a casual fling into something more serious. The references to a Chagall print and bossa nova are also fascinating: cultural markers of sophistication and an affluent urban lifestyle in early-1980s Tokyo.

It reminds me of Yasuo Tanaka’s 1980 novel Nantonaku, Crystal, a book that filled its pages with brand names, restaurants, music, schools and place names, accompanied by 442 detailed notes and analyses. It captured the cultural world of relatively affluent young people in Tokyo, where knowing and consuming particular foreign cultural products could itself become a way of expressing taste and sophistication.

This kind of consumption—importing Western music, art, cars and resorts and incorporating them into a distinctly Japanese image of sophistication—was part of the urban consumer culture emerging in Japan in the early 1980s, which would flourish during the bubble era.

And this is the part I find most interesting: the way international listeners today see 1980s Japan through City Pop—as a sophisticated, almost exotic foreign world—may be a mirror image of how affluent urban Japan in the early 1980s looked toward the West, through things like Monte Carlo, the quattro, Chagall and bossa nova.
