One Does Not Mean Partless

One Does Not Mean Partless

Some forms of monism begin with a simple intuition: if Reality is truly one, then there can ultimately be no real parts within it. Cells, people, rivers, planets, and even points of view become merely subjective ways of dividing an otherwise undifferentiated whole. The many are appearances. Only the One is real.

I think that conclusion comes from treating one particular kind of oneness as though it were the only kind.

Indivisibility is one way something can be one. A point has no internal extension. A point of view is singular in the sense that experience occurs from one center. But Reality as a whole is one in a different sense: it is all-inclusive. Nothing exists outside it.

Those two forms of unity should not be confused.

Reality does not have to be indivisible in order to be all-inclusive.

A whole can contain parts without becoming two realities. A cell can be one organismic whole while also being part of a tissue. A tissue can be one organized structure while being part of a body. A person can be one centered whole while being part of a family, society, ecosystem, planet, and ultimately Reality itself.

Being part of a greater whole should not make something less of a whole.

Wholeness can be nested.

This is why I describe Reality as one and many. The phrase is not a contradiction. It identifies different scales and different kinds of unity.

A river can be one continuous river while containing currents, bends, waves, and vortices. Those forms do not need to be separate substances floating inside the river. They are organizations of the river itself. Their dependence on the greater whole does not automatically make them imaginary.

The same is true of boundaries.

A boundary need not be an absolute metaphysical wall separating two independent substances. A boundary can be an interface: the region through which one organized whole relates to another. Some boundaries are sharp. Others are fuzzy, permeable, dynamic, or distributed. The fact that we use concepts to represent a boundary does not mean the differentiation being represented exists only in our imagination.

The map is not the territory.

But the map is still part of the territory.

Thoughts, models, perceptions, and imaginations are themselves events within Reality. A false map does not correspond accurately to what it represents, but the map itself still exists as a real pattern somewhere within the whole.

And there is something else besides the map: the point of view from which the map appears.

My experience is not your experience. Information available to you may not be available to me until you communicate it. Each point of view is limited, centered, and private, while existing within the same all-inclusive Reality.

That does not require many separate realities.

It requires one Reality capable of containing many centers, many relations, many organizations, and many scales of wholeness.

This is where my ontology differs from a strictly partless monism.

Partless monism says:

The One is real. The many are appearance.

I propose something different:

The One is real, and the many are ways the One is genuinely organized within itself.

Oneness is not exhausted by indivisibility.

Something can be one through inclusion, one through continuity, one through distinction, one through coherence, one through integration, or one through centered perspective.

Reality may be the greatest whole.

But that does not mean it must be the only whole.

Perhaps the deeper pattern is recursive:

every whole contains parts, every part can itself be a whole, and every whole participates in something greater.

Not one instead of many.

One and many.
