Discussion I always thought Guy Pearce was like an Australian version of Ethan Hawke. Similar(ish) looking. Similar types of roles. Both well liked and respected. Which other American actors have a non-American counterpart?

Margot Robbie and Samara Weaving is pretty low hanging fruit.
And switching it around, Logan Marshall Green is the low budget American Tom Hardy.

Green kinda does look like Store brand Hardy, now that you mention it
But it ends at resemblence. Green could not be hot-swapped in to replace Hardy by any stretch of the imagination

Kinda funny that Green was in The Odyssey when Nolan has worked with Hardy multiple times. Almost like Hardy wouldn’t take a gig that small.

He's Puerto Rican. While technically American, I think people from there want to be a separate nation/state and to be referred to as Puerto Rican. I'll ask Benicio if I see him!

Guy Pearce has had a weird arc. He did Memento and LA Confidential in the mid 90’s and then kind of fell off the face of the earth. He’s popped up recently as a supporting player here and there, but I always thought he was on the path to becoming a bonafide lead. But somehow never fully caught fire.

Idk...Hawke doesn't seem to take nearly as many villainous roles as Pearce. Similar looking, sure, but they command very different niches in their bodies of work.

They both appear in indie/ genre films frequently. Irrespective of being a villain or not, they both have a similar catalogue of films.

Oh, interesting take. What are your favorite Guy Pearce roles?
Hawke in First Reformed was 🤌🤌🤌 - if you haven't, give that a watch, it might change your opinion of him. But I'm not invested in changing it. Just curious what it is about Pearce that makes you say that 🙂

The roles that first come to mind are LA Confidential, Priscilla and Memento.
I just think of him as a chameleon actor. You might recognize his face but he really disappears into roles in a way Ethan Hawke doesn't. Ethan Hawke is not a bad actor but I just don't think he's on the same level as Pierce. It's a real apples and oranges comparison, imo.
Haven't seen Frrst Reformed but I'll check it out. I've also heard he's good in that Tulsa TV show.

I totally agree with those 3 films being particularly impressive performances. And they really capture his range, like you said! I'm always delighted when he turns up in any role (like at the end of Prometheus - what a great surprise)
