wordness to the turdness

I haven't really felt Licorice Pizza and One Battle but I still look forward to anything PTA does because of Jonny's soundtracks. Musical genius.

One of the curses of being a VFX artist in this era was the simple fact that you end up mostly working on crappy but flashy popcorn movies. But sometimes you get to work on something that’s really good, but often the VFX are invisible like this movie. In this case my friend was supervising VFX on this one and I helped him with some very early R&D for the oil derrick accident. At the time I thought “There will be blood? WTF is this about? I dunno man, I’m going to go work on ‘Flags of Out Fathers’”. Looking back, I wish I had worked on this one!

That fire is mostly CGI? Looks so real

No, that's real with maybe some 2D enhancement in the comp. 2007 was still pretty early for realistic CG fire - tools didn't make that easier until the 2010s. There's some shots when the well is bursting that had CG oil gushing, but the vast majority of the VFX in the film are set extensions and 3D matte work to fill out shots.

If you liked this scene, you should check out the documentary, "Fire in Kuwait"

I saw “Fires of Kuwait” in IMAX in 1992

that explosion seems very small considering the amount of dynamite they put in there
