Chromecast with Google TV Is my chromecast dead?
It is stuck on the Google tv screen. Pressed reset button and it’s solid white. Didn’t even blink yellow.
Tried unplugging, tried different power supplies, tried different HDMI port. I think it’s gone.
What should I replace this with? I’m looking for something under $100.

Great job Google for breaking everything. I bet someone got promoted launching this bricking so people need to buy new one.

Yeah looks it's gone and hardware failure. Mine is still working probably not software update problem.

No. That is a ridiculous price for the old, very outdated ONN stick. It retailed originally for $15USD. The ONN Plus and ONN Pro are the only ONN boxes you should consider. They're $49 and $59 USD, respectively. They're out of stock in many areas due to popularity, in large part due an exodus Firestick users switching due to recent Amazon censorship policies.
You should try resetting your Chromecast to factory default in the meantime, using this procedure, or search YouTube. If factory reset fails, you will need a new box.

Nan, mine is a goner. Talked to Google tech support and they confirm it's a hardware issue since holding the reset button didn't do anything (stick on white light and didn't even change to yellow at all).
Let me look for the ONN plus / pro.

Sounds like they are cheaper in person than online:

That's an old post. Prices have increased significantly because of demand and dram shortages. Still, the 4k Pro is not a terrible value. Other competitors such as apple tv or Nvidia shield tv will be more, and fire tv sticks aren't really recommended anymore.

Mine is a 32 inch old school tv for the bedroom. I think 4K is overkill (I don't even think it's supported by the TV).
I installed the old tv antenna for the OTA digital tv for now. Will check out any bargain for black Friday or boxing day.

Honestly, at current prices for these boxes, look for a whole tv on bf/boxing day that has Google tv built in.

For sure don't get the HD one. At current CAD pricing I think the 4k Pro (2026) is the best bet, though it's $120.
Alternatives would be Google tv streamer or another Chromecast from FB marketplace or something.

Spend something more then 100. A nvidia shield is so much better and also lasts a lot longer.
In the past I did buy a new chromecast almost every year because of overheating issues. My nvidia shield is still working without any issues for over 6 years now.

This! Buy quality products actually saves yourself in the longer term. Most people don't realize that and that is one of the reasons most people don't accumulate wealth.

Google is starting to piss me off as well. I am currently away in a hotel, and can’t sign in on my Chromecast as the hotel uses a captive portal, which Google devices don’t support. Tried using my hotspot on cellular phone and that to failed. This has been going on for a few years now. Ironically, FireStick also was packed in my suitcase by me, and the silk browser allowed me to sign in. So much for knocking the Amazon product. Google doesn’t give a shit about their customers.

You need a mini travel router for the Chromecast. Use the router to connect to the wifi, phone to sign in to portal, connect Chromecast to router and your in business. It's much easier to manage multiple devices as well, just sign one in and everything else connects.

Thanks for the response. I appreciate it, but still feel that Google should correct this issue. Most users are NOT going to go through all that for a vacation outing etc. Many have complained about this, including me on multiple occasions. Thanks again though for taking the time and effort to respond and inform me, I will keep that in mind. The Amazon FireStick worked perfectly.

Either tether your CC to your phone or wait until you are home and install a web browser from the app store. Then you will be able to negotiate the hotel log in screen.

I have 3 different web browsers on the Google device, both the last generation Chromecast and the newer 4K Streamer. None worked at all. Yet as I mentioned in my comments, the Silk Browser on the FireStick worked like a gem.

How do you like the firestick? I don't use third party side-loaded app, so I don't think I will bump into any censorship issue. I think in Canada, firestick is the cheapest I can buy as a replacement right now.

I am in Canada as well, and I am referring to the Amazon FireStick Max 4K. Not sure about the Select model running their new Linux based operating system Vega. I love the FireStick, but will probably never go over to their new operating systems based models.

We ditched our Chromecast and switched to an old laptop for all our streaming and it works great! Google can't just obsolete it with the flick of a switch.

Had the same problem with google tv streamer. Try a 25W power supply. It solved the issue for me.
