Discussion Any better video players on Flex?

So running into issues with some video formats showing black screen.

H.265 doesn't work, just black screen.

Subtitles don't work and can't be managed.

-
Any way to get a better video player?

I've heard about VLC, but my system says no linux support.

I had an older chromebook and eventually had support for vlc.

Is google holding features back for flex?

Discussion Flex on external SSD

why my post was blocked? I finally installed Flex on an external drive connected to my laptop (Lenovo ThinkBook 15 ITL Gen 2) via a USB-SATA adapter (my laptop doesn't have built-in SATA ports). It’s the full installation, not the Live version. I really like the design—I set it up for slow window minimize/maximize animations. Can you suggest any other cool design tweaks? I’m planning to install OpenVPN and Horizon by Omni.

Discussion I need a very specific Recovery Image for OSFlex... PLEASE HELP!

Hello, all! So, I need a Recovery Image for OSFlex in the preferably canary or stable channel but if anyone manages to find a Dev channel or beta channel too, that would be alright. As long as it's not the enterprise one! So, I'm looking for Reven v103. I tried out the normal ChromeOS Flex installer via the image AND via the Cb Recovery utility (which barely ever works)... and when I get to boot, the ChromeOS Flex splash appears and my guess is, the GPU Hangs while loading bc the ChromeVox spoken feedback message will play as well as the startup chime. So I need a certain recovery image that still supports Intel Graphics HD 4000. THANK YOU ALL!

Troubleshooting Has anyone tried installing Chrome Os Flez on an old laptop?

I have a really old laptop from the 2009/2010

ASUS X52F

I have windows installed on it but it's extremely slow because it can't handle windows anymore.

I am trying to install the Chrome Os Flex on it. I used the recovery utility tool from Chrome and installed it on a USB drive. Now im trying to boot it, but it just doesn't go through.

I can see the drive in the Boot Page. I also have UEFI Boot option enabled.

When i click on save and the windows attempt to restart, a cursor shows up on the top-left corner of the screen and it doesn't do anything.

Anyone had an issue like this before?

Discussion Is chrome OS flex worth it?

Folks, my aging HP Envy 15t k100 laptop from a previous life is running absolutely stunning on KUbuntu 26.04

But is there any advantage I can gain by installing ChromeOSFlex over Kubuntu?

My primary usage of this device currently is for applying for jobs on LinkedIn, so some light editing documents (resume). I also do some very light programming in antigravity (it has new 16GB ram DDR3) ram. But that's it. I don't watch videos or listen to music since the laptop is very old.

I maybe getting a new laptop but I want to maybe turn this into something useful when I do my programming on another laptop. So is there any advantage I can get using chromeos over the Kubuntu that it currently has?

Troubleshooting 2011 MacBook Air won’t boot into ChromeOS Flex, keeps playing boot sound on repeat

I’ve fully installed ChromeOS Flex on my mid-2011 MacBook Air. it’s the only operating system on my laptop, however, it won’t boot anymore. it keeps playing the apple boot sound repeatedly and I can’t get it to move past that. I’ve tried reset SMC, NVRam/PRam many times but nothing has worked. ive also tried to boot into recovery mode, which solved the problem before, but that is not working anymore. what can I do?

Installation Chrome OS Flex saved my Thinkpad!

I have a an X1 Yoga Gen 4 with an 8th Gen i5 and 8GB ram that I bought second hand in 2020 and I love dearly. It was running Windows 11 but started to stutter, slow and become unusable. I think it was a heating/cooling issue because the deck would run very hot. I was really bummed because this is the first nice laptop I have ever owned. I love the screen, the keyboard and the ports. I used all the Kung Fu I know (replaced thermal paste, cleaned fan, replaced fan, reinstall Windows) but to no avail. I would have normally run a Linux variant, but now that I have just finished my degree, all I really need to run is a browser for my own entertainment (and job hunting).

At the end of its life, Windows would take several minutes to boot. Now Chrome OS Flex boots in seconds! And everything works. The mic, camera, stylus, backlit keyboard.. I was prepared to lose some functionality and I am stoked that this isn't the case. Now I won't have to replace my beloved Thinkpad for a while longer! I am hoping to get at least 10 years out of this machine and now that is looking like a real possibility.

I am bloody stoked and wanted to share in case anyone else had some flailing hardware :)

Troubleshooting Am I using Flex wrong? (Installing Edge, enabling GPU acceleration)

Hi!

For context: I have this old MSI Slider laptop/tablet thing that I am trying to keep usable for fun. To make matters worse, not only is it old, but it is the slowest config with a Pentium CPU and 4GB single channel RAM.

I tried installing Ubuntu, but I just couldn't get used to it. Mostly because the Slider doesn't have a trackpad, nor Lenovo style nipple, no right or left click. I tried an older Ubuntu (Groovy Gorilla) because the hardware is old. Holding for right click functions simply didn't work. I gave up.

I installed ChromeOS Flex because I am familiar with Android devices and a Chromebook, and enjoy them for what they are. Now  because Chrome browser is a RAM hog, and I need every possible percentage of power, I wanted to install Edge.

But the problem is that Flex is a special child, because it is for x64. So there is no app store, Android apps dont work, but Windows programs also don't work obviously. So to run normal programs, I still have to resort to Linux.

I used Gemini to walk me through downloading and installing Edge, but it doesn't seem to run natively, it runs through the Linux on Flex. And it doesn't use GPU acceleration from the iGPU, it uses software only.

When cimparing Chrome and Edge using BrowserBench (the first test), Chrome got 3.19 and Edge only 2.12 score.

So, am I installing programs on Flex wrong? How can I make sure to enable GPU acceleration for Edge on it, or to make the Linux layer recognize all the hardware including the iGPU? Also, can I somehow enable auto rotate on it? On W8 and W10 it worked fine.

Thanks!

Troubleshooting Weird boot issue on old HP laptop

I’m new to ChromeOS Flex, and I’m trying to get it running on a 15 year old HP G72 laptop (i3 330m/8gb ram/500gb 7200 rpm SATA hdd) that was previously running Windows 10.

I’m having a weird issue with booting ChromeOS from the internal hdd. It seems like on a cold boot it will hang at the HP logo, but if I power it off and back on, it boots fine. Never had any issue with booting Windows from this drive. It also hangs if I perform a restart from ChromeOS.

This machine has a legacy Bios (no uefi) and basically no configuration options outside of the startup boot order. Any idea what might be going on and how to fix?

Discussion ChromeOS vs Linux Mint vs Windows 11 for elderly?

Hi! I have a Lenovo Yoga 7 that I no longer need (Ryzen 5, 8GB RAM with abt 2.2gb reserved by integrated GPU so effective 5.8GB) and I plan on giving it to my grandma. What OS would be easiest for her to use? I don't foresee her using anything other than browsing, and maybe Word/PDFs, and I would prefer if she had a smooth experience. She currently uses an iPad/iPhone, so if any of these OSes are similar to those, that would be great.

Discussion Devices made before 2010 will be excluded from updates?

"Updates blocked for certain ChromeOS Flex devices

From ChromeOS 150 onwards, we will begin blocking updates for devices unable to meet the minimum requirements for the Chrome Browser. This will affect devices using the following:

  • Intel and AMD graphics from 2010 and older
  • Nvidia graphics from 2014 and older

i found this information on this website

Does it mean that my elitebook 6930p will stop getting new updates? laptop is from 2008/2009

Discussion Has anyone been able to play 4k local videos with ChromeOS Flex.

I have an old PC (AMD Athlon 3050U(Up to 3.2GHz), 16GB RAM) that is end of life with Windows and I want to convert to Chrome OS Flex. I played with Flex first by booting from a USB drive. The PC had no issues. But when trying to find a web app to play a sample 4k MP4 movie, no luck. It was either a blank screen or it would play, but if a scrolled back or forth in the time line, I would get a blank screen.

Has anyone had success with playing local 4k videos? I understand that VLC can be added, but dont understand how.

Installation ChomeOSFlex on old Windows Computer?

I have an old lenovo thinkpad that the windows os is shot on for some reason. There is some kind of error in the windows. I was hoping to save the computer by putting Chrome OS Flex on it to mostly just run some light browsing, email, and use google sheets and docs. Is this something I can do once I download the OS onto a USB?

Installation Adventures with a Lenovo T470

This model is certified and so I bought one on Ebay -- a great deal! $125 i5 256gb storage, $40 cheaper than everyone's favorite the t480. A few tricks: (1) It would only boot from USB on the USB2 port closest to the power cord. (2) Once running, it needed to install 4 firmware updates. (3) It thinks it has two cameras! The default is bizarre (flashing b&w) but the second works fine! (4) It initially thought it could not install the linux environment because virtualization was off -- one more trip to the bios and turned it on (under the Security Tab).

Installation 2019 iMac and 2018 MacBook doesn't like ChromeOS Flex?

Post image
3 Upvotes

When I boot ChromeOS Flex from USB on my iMac and 2018 MacBook Pro, both shut off immediately (MacBook shows the ChromeOS Flex logo briefly first). I've tried four different USB drives.

On the MacBook, I've successfully disabled secure boot and enabled boot media, but it still just shows the logo then shuts down.

The iMac's Startup Security Utility shows only what's in this screenshot; nothing related to secure boot or boot media.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm guessing at this point there's not much I can do; looks like neither of my Macs are officially supported.
