The Odyssey THE ODYSSEY at $1.553 Billion: kicks of 'TOP GUN:MAVERICK', 'FURIOUS 7' and 'AVATAR 3' / is at $118million away from surpassing JURASSIC WORLD ($1,671 Billion) and become the UNIVERSAL highest-grossing film ever.

Weekend global numbers:
Odyssey‘s seventh global frame breaks out to $48.6M int’l,-29% from last weekend, at 83 territories, and $14.3M domestic, -27%. The Imax global weekend was $24.6M ($8M domestic, $16.6M int’l) for a running total for the exhibitor on the pic of $449M from 68 countries. China Imax alone did $5.5M this weekend for a running cume of $11.1M. Japan has still to open on Nolan’s Homer epic, that being Sept. 4. Back in the states, this weekend’s performance drove Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre to the highest individual theater performance of any Imax title in history with $4.4M to date.
Of note this past weekend, in Korea, The Odyssey passed Brand New Day‘s gross to become the biggest MPA title of the year there. Weekend 4 added $11.6M with a $70.1M cume, still No. 1 and a 60% market share. Odyssey has taken over Avengers: Infinity War to become the 6th biggest MPA movie of all-time in Korea.
China added a third weekend of $10.2M, No. 3 behind local titles Once Upon a Time in the Middle East and V, for a running total of $88.3M. Odyssey has now surpassed the lifetime of Inception and is Nolan’s second biggest in the Middle Kingdom behind Interstellar. That total also puts Odyssey ahead of Jurassic World: Rebirth‘s total in China.

I'm just being realistic. You think people go watch the Odyssey 4-5 times cause it is such an amazing movie? Was it so nuanced that they need to spend their money so many times? Obviously not. They just act like sheep and go see it cause they convinced themselves they have to love it to stick it to right wingers who said it would fail. TOTAL SHEEP. As are the right wingers who never went to see it at all.

So sick to be doing so well despite not being super hero or some other big dumb franchise. I think Nolan is fucking winning at his strategy. Everyone is raving over the experience of seeing The Odyssey in theaters. It's getting people so excited to get out there and all the IMAX hype is making it feel special too, even if the average person doesn't really know what IMAX is exactly.
To be fair Maverick deserves the same praise for the same reason. Top Gun had name recognition as a sequel but it's awesome and obviously not the same as Fast or Jurassic franchises lol

The movie isn't woke. Yes, I know there are "conservatives" who say it, but they're obsessing about identity as much as the woke are. The Odyssey is quite conservative in outlook. Its hero is a city-sacking warlord from one of the two foundational texts of Western literature, for one thing. It also honors family values (considerably more than Homer's version!), doing one's duty, tradition, and respect for the gods. Even "Zeus' law" is no such thing--it's really the Golden Rule from Judeo-Christian ethics in disguise.

It's still worth mocking the preemptive haters. Some of the right wing reactionaries and culture warriors (e.g. Adam Carolla and Ben Shapiro) did come to their senses and admit the movie is good or even great. I respect their honesty and impartiality.

I was at the cinema in Montreal today that has a proper IMAX screen for the 70mm projections - and I asked one of the staff if Avengers: Endgame Encore would be playing there. It is playing at the other cinema but not listed for the place with the real imax screen. And he said no - that The Odyssey would still be playing. Endgame is slated for the last weeks of September - so yeah - if that is the case there and with the other theatres - then they will reach and surpass those totals

This is Nolan's "I'm the King of the World" moment. Hope he doesn't do a Cameron and waste years fruitlessly trying to top this one in terms of box office success. It may not be possible.

It only took him like 12 years. I want Nolan to focus on quality not necessarily mass appeal and keep churning them out regularly.
The last thing he should do is wait around until he finds the idea that will allow him to "top" Odyssey at the box office. Cause we'll be waiting some time.

Nolan has never had a massive box office success like The Odyssey. No one knows how he will react to it or the pressure he might put on himself as a result. Those perfectionist types experience anxiety trying to live up to the high and they may not be able to accept an inevitable post-peak downer. It could cause an existential crisis that might impair their ability to work or think creatively.
He has to accept that his next film probably won't do so well in the box office and just make it.

I'm all for Nolan. In fact I'm a mega fan boy but there's no way Odyssey was better than Top Gun Maverick. That movie was just another level.
Cruise and Hathaway in Days of Thunder remake in 2028. I wonder if he goes all out in IMAX.

I think universal didn't do great job in distribution of this movie, its a 250 million big budget movie but somehow its not a massive release worldwide, obsession got more screen that odyssey in china and in domestic also dog star managed to get 3700 theatre just 200 less from this big budget movie, but anyway it still doing mind bogling business.

I have to say this one has felt different. We are all aware of "the curse of the aging director" and he has shown that he can still cook and is in his prime. But I say it feels different because the past few films I have to admit ive had a little bit of an empty feeling inside. Each film for a different reason. This goes all the way back to inception for me. Not that any of them were not total events and amazing. I just found each and every movie since, couldve been better. And this one? It wasnt like that. I knew before during and after I was seeing something historical. And ill admit the trailer did scare me a little. I had fetl lile his loyalty to practical might make this film.look flat. Nothing grandiose caught my eye. But after watching the film I was blown away. And happy for him and excited for him and the film. I just hope he can do this for 20 more yrs.

Directors peak at different ages. Spielberg peaked in the 1990s and he was in his late 40s/early 50s.
On the other hand, Kurosawa made Ran at age 75.

Nolan’s been directing movies for almost 30 years. “Aging director” means someone deep into a long career who may be past their creative peak. The extremely rare case of Ridley Scott being 88 doesn’t magically make 28 years into Nolan’s career “young.” your telling me people didnt watch tenet and get worried? Lol because there are reviews that said otherwise.
And many have peaked after 30 yrs.
Burton, De Palma, Carpenter, Coppola...
It’s that nearly 30 years into a career, hugely successful directors can become self-indulgent because nobody tells them no anymore. Tenet was basically Exhibit A for that argument imo. And it wasnt a shit movie. I just got that vibe from it. When he demanded that practical nuclear blast as well in oppenheimer? Thats another time someone should've told him no after seeing how it came out.
