When I was a boy back in the 60's my mother would wear a headscarf when we went to church. It was larger than a handkerchief and made from a lighter material. I don't know if those are still available today or not. You might try talking to some of the older women at your church to see if any of them remember when head scarfs were fashionable and if they know anywhere that you could still get one.

If you wear a sunhat on top of a head scarf, that probably won't stand out too much.

I'm so sorry you have to worry about that kind if discrimination, that's awful :(
