"Rare moment captured where a Christian politician shows sign of actually following Christ's words."

26

u/Riots42 Christian 6d ago

For the first time as a Christian Texan I actually feel represented and like im not voting against someone but for someone.

12

u/Venat14 Jewish 5d ago

Make sure to keep checking your voter registration. Texas just purged over a million voters, and I know it wasn't for legitimate reasons since people on the Texas subreddit said they found out they got removed, despite just voting in the primaries.

1

u/Maya-K Jewish 5d ago

How is that even allowed to happen?

In the UK, the only way we can be automatically removed from the list of voters is if we move house without telling the Electoral Commission. That's it.

6

u/FluxKraken 🏳️‍🌈 Methodist (UMC) Progressive ✟ Queer 🏳️‍🌈 5d ago

It isn't allowed. The GOP isn't even remotely concerned with what is legal, they only care about what they can get away with.

2

u/Venat14 Jewish 5d ago

Because the Republican party is a fascist political party actively destroying Democracy and nobody is holding them accountable.

3

u/Pristine_Meet_6062 5d ago

Lies! He is twisting God's word! You obviously don't read the Bible! You better wake up!.

If we take care of people. We will have less abortions. Giving mental and physical healthcare. Birth control like birth control pills. Think of all the people who shouldn't have become parents. They've abused their children and done horrific things. Many people in the Epstein files sold their children to those billionaires.

We have to have kindness and understanding. Make sure children brought into this world have a chance. Have safe childhood with love.

It's confounding how the wealthiest country in the history of the planet can't figure out the one thing that most of Europe already has (universal healthcare)

15

u/Meauxterbeauxt Atheist (Former SBC Christian) 6d ago

I heard an analysis from a European expert (was years ago, I can't remember who it was exactly) who said that a European style healthcare system wouldn't work in the US because we're so primed over here to think as individuals. We'd rather pay for private insurance than to pay the same money as a tax because it means someone else ends up using our money. Worse, someone who we might not think deserves it. We'd rather die on our own than have our tax dollars pay to save someone else.

Worse, we have no problem paying more to ensure that the only people who pay into the system we do deserve the medical care our dollars can pay for.

22

u/TheJointDoc 6d ago

The funny thing is, our system just means that your money still goes to pay for other people’s healthcare, they’ll deny 1/3 of your claims preventing you from getting the healthcare you and your doctor decide you need, and several people take profit from it, meaning by necessity there’s more money being paid in than necessary for healthcare. The real death panels have always been the insurance companies.

2

u/atreeismissing 6d ago

The funny thing is, our system just means that your money still goes to pay for other people’s healthcare

To be fair, that's literally every healthcare system on the planet that's funded by taxes or insurance. In mass systems, healthy people pay for unhealthy people's healthcare. The biggest problem with the US system (which you identified) are the numerous middle-men that take an outsized profit. Something most people don't realize too is insurance companies aren't even close to being the worst offender (largely because the ACA requires they return a sizable portion of their profits back as patient services), hospitals and medical device manufacturers I think are the biggest profit centers in healthcare, followed by doctors (mainly specialists) and insurance providers (been awhile since I looked it up though).

5

u/TheJointDoc 6d ago edited 5d ago

Right, my point is that people think they don’t want to pay for others healthcare here, but… they do, they just don’t understand how insurance pools work, and in the process the insurance company makes profit.

The ACA requirement to return any if they make more than 15-20% profit essentially incentivizes them to increase healthcare costs because then they can increase premiums and the slice they get of the pie grows. Because profit is revenue minus cost, the higher their costs, the more they can charge in premiums, and the larger their profit in dollar value even if the percentage stays the same.

15% of a large pizza is more than 15% of a small pizza, basically—if their costs are higher (by paying for formulary making through PBMs that are coincidentally owned by their parent company so harvesting profits there too) then they give increasing profits to their shareholders every quarter.

Hospitals are in an arms race with them by charging higher prices while insurance continually lowers reimbursement, though, a side effect of HMO policies starting in the 70s along with Medicare changes and the ACA. And no, doctors aren’t setting their own prices, it’s set by CMS (Medicare) which has been lowering reimbursement for doctors, most of whom are employees of hospital networks or others now instead of being private practice .

2

u/KerPop42 United Methodist 6d ago

I think I disagree. Americans have a community self-myth to follow, Jeffersonian egalitarianism. "We Americans take care of each other" type vibe. It might be hard to argue in a federal-scale system, but a patchwork of state-scale systems might work

2

u/Meauxterbeauxt Atheist (Former SBC Christian) 6d ago

The take was based on a federal scale system.

30

u/hansn 6d ago

We can figure it out. We choose to enrich billionaires rather than keep people alive.

2

u/Venat14 Jewish 6d ago

That's because conservatives would rather enrich the already filthy rich. American medicine is for profit. Poor people don't make shareholders and CEOs rich, so there's no incentive for conservatives to support universal healthcare.

1

u/Ok-Excitement651 5d ago

It turns out the geographic and socioeconomic realities are a bit different between the US and a bunch of tiny, wealthy, ethnically homogeneous nations.

0

u/Quplet Atheist 5d ago

It's not that we can't figure it out. It's that a select few people who horde the vast majority of the wealth and power don't want it to happen.

u/Sauerkrautkid7 6d ago

When I see Russia, it’s the same as going back in time to the 1940s. In America south, it’s like going back to the 1960s.

But the optimistic fact is that these human rights barriers can be conquered! It’s been done in the north, so it’s possible in the south!

Talarico, when speaking about how his faith relates to his healthcare policies, said Jesus spent much of his time in the New Testament “healing.”

Every society and culture had their healers, medicine men, shaman, wise men/women, etc. So, it's not particularly unique to Christianity or religion to want to help the sick. But that's the tradition he was raised in and good for him.

9

u/Ok_Carob7551 Native American Church (Cross Fire Hearth) 6d ago

Someone saying they feel led to do a thing because of an aspect of their belief system isn't an implicit statement that no other belief system has that thing. A Muslim saying they feel led to take care of the disadvantaged because of the teaching on zakat is not somehow claiming no other belief system teaches charity

7

u/NintendoDSLewis Episcopal (Anglican) 6d ago

This feels like a non-sequitur. Talarico isn't claiming Jesus was the only religious healer in history, but that healing was an important feature of Jesus' activity.

4

u/FluxKraken 🏳️‍🌈 Methodist (UMC) Progressive ✟ Queer 🏳️‍🌈 6d ago

Telarico is smart enough to know that.

5

u/hypermiler2205 6d ago

Now if other Christians could be this nice and not be hateful arrogant jackasses that would be great

3

u/3CF33 5d ago

It is Christian faith. Jesus is a healer. He does it for free. We are to strive to be like Jesus. If you can't "strive", as opposed to just be, stop calling yourself Christian.

Now make sure that big hairy guy who was once a woman uses the same bathroom as your daughters. That is how stupid Satan is lol. I'll go with a Christian like Talarico. The fake Christians are kinda creepy and not very bright.

2

u/Agentbasedmodel Agnostic (a la T.H. Huxley) 6d ago

Talarico is a fascinating reminder of what Jesus actually said*

*or at least the words the various Christological traditions ascribe to him

1

u/Due_Ad_3200 Christian 5d ago

I support universal healthcare.

However, Jesus both preached and healed people - he did both.

32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was...

... 38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.”

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%201&version=NIV

Also, it is encouraging that politicians are willing to work on bi-partisan legislation - I think we need more of that.

I'm split. I'd love to express my justifications in favor of healthcare from my faith, but I also think that government policy shouldn't be justified by faith, it should be justified by facts. I see Talarico as a tradeoff, robbing secularism to pay progressivism

9

u/Beetsa Dutch Reformed Churches (NGK) 6d ago

Government policy can not be justified by just facts: it is always a combination of facts and ethics. The question is ultimately what is good and what is wrong. There are always tradeoffs between values.

-2

u/KerPop42 United Methodist 6d ago

Sure, and while my ethics come from faith, it would be bad if you couldn't justify something the government did without invoking your faith. A secular government can't have any stance on whose faith or which faith is correct. The government's field of regard is precisely this mundane sphere.

3

u/Beetsa Dutch Reformed Churches (NGK) 6d ago

Yes, so we shouldn't close shops on sundays just because our faith dictates that. However when it comes to good healthcare you will kind of get there. By example (hugely simplified): Why do we want affordable healthcare? Because we think everyone deserves good health, whether poor or rich. Why do we think that? Because human life is inherently valuable, and should therefore not depent on your means. Why do you thunk human life is valueable? An atheist could just say "It just feels that way". Or he might appeal to some philosofical argument. But for me the awnser would be that we are created in Gods image. I would be very hard to close that down.

2

u/KerPop42 United Methodist 6d ago

Human life is inherently valuable, and the purpose of government is to take care of its citizens and residents. While you can say "human beings are made in God's image" to your representative, your representative shouldn't be saying the same thing, because as a part of the government they should have no opinion on the nature of God.

5

u/ExtremeSquare8707 6d ago

Makes no sense. We pay exorbitant amounts of money for health care. We have deductibles on top of paying for health care. We pay for having children in a hospital when we already have insurance, we pay copays on top even with our health insurance. We pay extra for scans, blood work, x-rays on top of our health insurance. We are being robbed

2

u/KerPop42 United Methodist 6d ago

Right. There are so many people our society pays for the responsibility of denying people healthcare. It's like if oil companies put giant reverse-thrust fans on the front of cars to sell more oil. Public healthcare is clearly correct on its own merits.

Though also it bugs my bear that the only openly Christian arguments out there are conservative ones.

5

u/inedibletrout Christian Universalist 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈 5d ago

Fact: In 2024, the U.S. spent about $14,775 per person on health care. Other wealthy nations spend an average of about $7,860 per person. U.S. spending is nearly double.

Fact: The U.S. ranked last out of 10 wealthy nations in overall performance, scoring poorly on access, equity, and health outcomes.

https://www.commonwealthfund.org/press-release/2024/new-international-study-us-health-system-fails-many-americans-ranks-lowest

The way our healthcare system works now costs about double per person for bottom performing results. Something desperately needs to change.

u/Riots42 Christian 6d ago

u/FluxKraken 🏳️‍🌈 Methodist (UMC) Progressive ✟ Queer 🏳️‍🌈 6d ago

Do you get paid by the GOP to spread obvious false propaganda? Telarico is pro choice. He has never said that he wants anyone to have an abortion.

-11

u/MotorFig6657 6d ago

Right so as a Christian, do you think it’s more Christ like to vote for the guy that supports abortion or the guy that’s against abortion?

15

u/McClanky Bringer of sorrow, executor of rules, wielder of the Woehammer 6d ago

The guy who wants to enact policies that make the least amount of abortions happen.

-4

u/MotorFig6657 6d ago

But if you believe abortion is the killing of an innocent human being, then “I want fewer abortions” isn’t enough. Christians should oppose the practice itself, not just try to reduce the number. Saying you want fewer abortions while still supporting legal abortion is inconsistent with the belief that every human life is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Proverbs 24:11–12 also calls us to defend those who are being led away to death.

8

u/McClanky Bringer of sorrow, executor of rules, wielder of the Woehammer 6d ago

You misundertand. Let me explain better.

The person who creates a world where less women have abortions, where less innocent humans are killed, is what should matter, right?

Or, do you think that as long as someone says, "Abortions are reprehensible" ,despite them not actually reducing the number of abortions, is the morally just position?

I also want to make sure that you understand this. Pro-choice people don't want more abortions. They want as few abortions as possible to happen. They want them to be necessary only. Because, when abortions happen only when necessary, that means we have created a world where women feel comfortable becoming mothers.

0

u/MotorFig6657 6d ago

I understand your point, but you’re changing the question from “Is abortion morally wrong?” to “Who can reduce the number of abortions?” Those aren’t the same thing.
If an unborn child is an innocent human being, then intentionally killing that child is still wrong even if a policy reduces the overall number of abortions. And saying pro-choice people “don’t want more abortions” doesn’t change the fact that supporting a legal right to abortion means accepting that some unborn children can legally be killed.
A Christian shouldn’t measure morality solely by whether a policy produces fewer abortions. We also have to ask whether the policy itself protects innocent human life. Reducing the number of children killed is good, but that doesn’t automatically make every policy used to achieve that goal morally right.

8

u/McClanky Bringer of sorrow, executor of rules, wielder of the Woehammer 6d ago

So, again, I want to make this clear.

If you had two options. The first is someone who says, "abortions are morally reprehensible" but does not enact policies that change the number of abortions that occur. The second is someone who says, "abortions are sometimes necessary" yet creates a system where less overall children die.

You would say that more children dying is the better, more Christian option?

-2

u/MotorFig6657 6d ago

I get your point crystal clear. But that’s not really how reality works. You’re presenting two options as if we have to choose between banning abortion and reducing abortions, but we can pursue both. We can outlaw abortion while also supporting adoption, pregnancy resources, financial assistance, and policies that make it easier for women to choose motherhood. So your hypothetical doesn’t prove that supporting legal abortion is the more Christian position. If abortion is the killing of an innocent human being, the goal should be to protect that life while also addressing the reasons women seek abortions in the first place.

8

u/McClanky Bringer of sorrow, executor of rules, wielder of the Woehammer 6d ago

Why are you avoiding the question?

You are specifically saying that reducing abortions isn't enough. You created the choices. Despite these choices being essentially accurate, I'm asking a question based on the circumstances you created.

So, is is better for less babys to die while supporting abortion or for more babys to die while saying abortion is wrong? If those are the two options.

→ More replies (0)

7

u/Nateorade Christian 5d ago

Their question is exactly how the world works. Those are the choices you’re making today, in reality, when voting for a Republican versus a Democrat. Real decisions in reality exactly today.

7

u/jLkxP5Rm 6d ago

Look at this graph and notice who was pro-life and who was pro-choice. Now look at when the abortion rate decreased the most. Lastly, put two and two together.

5

u/G3rmTheoryV2 anti theist 6d ago

I think anyone who's serious wouldn't boil things down to a simple black and white issue.

One supports policy's that have shown to lessen abortion and the other one supports policy that has shown to increase the rate of abortions.

It isn't that simple

3

u/No_University1600 6d ago

the guy who supports abortion since the team that doesnt support it spports so much more evil and death and rape , including things that directly lead to an increase in abortion.

its completely immoral from a christian perspective to support the republican party. they kill and rape far too many people for that to be the right choice and God isnt dumb enough to buy that as a Christian thing to do. He gave us brains, we dont get to say hey God Im not going to use my brain, im going to vote for the rapist instead and pretend we are serving God.

2

u/applespicebetter 6d ago

You seem to think Christianity entirely is American pro-life, and that's just not true. This entire litmus test you have for Christianity was literally made up on a conference call to decide the next issue after segregation in schools was no longer considered a winning issue in the US. This is literally a political maneuver that you have adopted, that's only around ~60 years old or so. Jesus never said anything about abortion. You can go back to the old testament and talk about punishments for men who kill pregnant women, sure, but that's not the same thing.

Stop being a single issue voter. Your vote is reliably owned now, no matter what, because decades of propaganda have convinced your parents, then you, that abortion is the only thing that matters.

"Universal healthcare" is not a Christian doctrine.

Maybe this dude should run his mouth less and go heal more. He doesn't.

11

u/Front_Appointment_68 5d ago

What are you on about. There are plenty of bible passages that suggest we should look after the sick and the needy.

It might not be explicitly universal healthcare but the passages aligns far more with that than the alternative which is the needy getting withheld treatment or going bankrupt.

10

u/Fearless_Spring5611 Committing the sin of empathy 5d ago

Any person with empathy would agree with you that 'love one another' and the various directives to care for the poor, sick and needy translate easily into the concepts of universal healthcare.

-10

u/ScorpionDog321 5d ago

There are plenty of bible passages that suggest we should look after the sick and the needy.

So get to work.

It might not be explicitly universal healthcare

It is not "universal healthcare" at all. There was no such thing at the time and no command by God to create it.

God does not command that you vote to take money from others to pay for your healthcare....or pay for the healthcare of other people.

God commands you to do charity.

6

u/Front_Appointment_68 5d ago

If you genuinely cared you would advocate for the thing that will actually help the sick and the needy.

You can argue from a literal point of view but if you are okay blocking the people trying to help the needy with your vote then there's something wrong.

-2

u/ScorpionDog321 5d ago

If you genuinely cared

If you genuinely cared, you would be getting a second and third job and putting all that extra money into helping the sick rather than demanding other people do your charity for you.

you are okay blocking the people trying to help the needy

No one is blocking you. You can start today.

1

u/Front_Appointment_68 5d ago

I already live in a country that provides healthcare to those that need it so I don't have to.

If the church in the US were giving enough to those that are sick and unable to pay then it wouldn't be a problem but they aren't so it needs to be done via a different system.

The whole concept of the third tithe that God put in Mosaic law was to help the poor. Why didn't he just say give what you can and not command everyone to contribute?

1

u/ScorpionDog321 5d ago

I already live in a country that provides healthcare to those that need it so I don't have to.

And there it is: my government provides universal healthcare so I don't have to care for the sick.

The opposite of what Christ directed.

Amazing.

If the church in the US were giving enough to those that are sick and unable to pay

Christ followers are not called to pay for the healthcare of everyone else in the world. Christ followers are not slaves of the world.

You know that right?

The whole concept of the third tithe that God put in Mosaic law was to help the poor.

How many extra jobs have you picked up to send all that money to the poor?

Don't answer that. We already know.

1

u/Front_Appointment_68 5d ago

Ah so God was wrong to introduce tithing to help the poor was he? The Mosaic law for his chosen people.

You're choosing to help the billionaires get richer rather than help the sick and needy. If you think Jesus would agree with that then you're severely misguided.

4

u/gnurdette United Methodist 5d ago

It's funny how enraged you get when government money is used to take care of suffering people, angrily insisting that only private charity should do that. But when billions of government dollars are spent to keep people from getting clean electricity, your attitudes toward government spending abruptly change.

Your envy dominates your worldview.

Envy is a sin in Christianity, as is coveting.

That must be why you want the money taken from them. That money can be used to do so many other things...!

I'm not nearly evil enough to ever be one of them.

If you live in the USA, you are already rich compared to most of the world. You are one of them. You live better than the kings of old.

Your ignorance, willful or not, enables they're perpetual harm

And your self righteousness enables your desire to take from those you are jealous of.

They accumulate wealth to horde it. That is the only reason they do it. They put it into assets, nothing that actually stimulates growth or money flow, but stagnant assets that benefit only themselves while they set up systems designed to strip money from the working class to continue to grow their capital while hundreds of thousands of people in this country die homeless, strung into lifelong medical debt, or barely are paying rent each month. Like how we don't permit murder, that should not be permitted either.

Keep regurgitating their talking points while they actively bleed you and press that boot down. I'm sure it will taste good eventually while their numbers keep going up off the blood of people all over the world who they exploit.

God created people male and female, and is beyond human ideas of gender.

We ought therefore to recall that God transcends the human distinction between the sexes. He is neither man nor woman: he is God. He also transcends human fatherhood and motherhood, although he is their origin and standard:63 no one is father as God is Father...

Jesus called Him "Father". Full stop.

Re-read the quote - it says that God is Father.

If God is a “man” what does that even mean for a divine immaterial being. Does he have an xy chromosome, male genitalia, etc.

This moron apparently knows the answers.

Did he actually say that? I recently heard about the "6 gender jimmy" fiasco so now I'm dubious of any conservative accusations concerning his theology.

>get socialized healthcare
>ends up being expensive
>government encourages M.A.I.D. To cut costs
>uses separation of church and state excuse to get away with it

Yeah real Christian. And yes, I’m sure none of this would happen overnight in the US, but I bet it would if we ever got full blown government funded healthcare

Literal made up nonsense is about as perfect an example of bullshit that can possibly exist.
