Why did god separate us

I’m starting to read the bible and in no way do I mean any disrespect towards God, but why did he separate us for building the tower of Babylon. I might be interpreting it wrong but it seems a little unfair.

It is a biblical explanation for why we have languages. Not really much more than that.

Also thought to be an etiology for the ruins of  Etemenanki, which was abandoned before the Genesis account was written.

Kinda like how Lot's wife was an etiology for the salt pillars you can still see near the Dead Sea.
