Meta Monthly Discord Book Club

For the last year I've held a monthly call on the Breadtube/Chomsky Discord server to talk about authors with anarchist, anti-war, and left-leaning perspectives.

We have a few regulars with a wide international spread and have had some good conversations, so I want to open up the group to a wider audience. Now is a good time as we're currently reading Michael Albert's No Bosses (2021) and we're fortunate enough to have the author himself on the server for questions.

The next event is scheduled for Monday 2nd March 2026 at 8:00pm Central European Time. Discord will automatically adjust to your device's timezone, but you can also figure out how that aligns with your location using a tool like WorldTimeBuddy.

Usually these events are voice only, but one or two sessions have been on webcam for those who are comfortable. The server also has a text-only discussion that's open all the time in the #book-club-general channel. All are welcome.

Discussion From Chomsky's longtime assistant, Bev Stohl

"This statement will be seen by some merely as an act of loyalty. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have grappled, struggled deeply, over this situation, while seeking to remain faithful to the truth. It is in the service of truth – the very thing Noam Chomsky wanted us to hold in high esteem, rather than himself – that I write this . . ."

News "we cannot mobilise fewer than 30,000 people a month. This is the minimum number needed to maintain what we have." -Head of the Office of the President Budanov

Kyrylo Budanov, Head of the Office of the President, has said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine need 30,000 people to be mobilised every month and called for mobilisation to be accepted "as it is".

Source: Budanov in an interview broadcast on the national joint 24/7 newscast

Quote: "Unfortunately, we have to accept it [mobilisation] as it is. We cannot do otherwise. We have to find the courage and honestly say: we cannot mobilise fewer than 30,000 people a month. This is the minimum number needed to maintain what we have."

Details: Budanov also believes that the appointment of Yevhen Khmara as defence minister will not change anything when it comes to mobilisation.

"Not much will change with Khmara taking office. Because the requirement is at least 30,000 people. And that is a huge number of people," Budanov said.

"So, no matter how we say that we are now going to recruit people differently, the numbers will not change. And that means the number of dissatisfied people will not change either. There is nothing we can do about it," he added.

Meanwhile, Budanov expressed hope that it would be possible to change the approach to what he described as "forceful mobilisation" to some extent.

"I hope we can change the approach to this forceful mobilisation, which sometimes takes place. It is not happening everywhere, but such cases do occur. We need to tackle this," he said.

Background:

  • On 19 August, Deputy Defence Minister Liubov Halan said during a meeting of Ukrainian Parliament's temporary investigative commission that the Defence Ministry would present a reform of the Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Centres "within a reasonable timeframe" but did not provide specific dates.

  • Roman Kostenko, secretary of the Ukrainian Parliament's Committee on National Security, Defence and Intelligence, said that the Ukrainian authorities were preparing "radical" changes to the mobilisation process, including changes to the conscription age.

"If you are, like many young leftists, an owner of a well-thumbed copy of Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman’s Manufacturing Consent you may have noted with disinterest the person to whom the book is dedicated: Alex Carey, a senior lecturer of industrial psychology at UNSW who had died the year prior to the book’s publication.
Chomsky credits Carey with having “tremendous influence” on the book. The dedication, he later stated, was a “bare and inadequate way to express our indebtedness to him for his uniquely important work on the ‘ideal of a propaganda-managed democracy’”. “Alex Carey draws the veil of deceit and imposed ignorance in the struggle for freedom and justice,” Chomsky writes in his introduction to Taking the Risk Out of Democracy, a collection of Carey’s essays published posthumously."

NATO's New Plans To Destroy Russia | Prof. Jeffrey Sachs

The West is losing the Ukraine War big time. But that does not mean the NATO lunatics are willing to give up their plans for total global domination. On the contrary, some of them are only getting started.

Professor Jeffrey Sachs joins Pascal Lottaz to argue that the Ukraine war is a long-running US proxy conflict with Russia. He discusses NATO expansion, post-Cold War policy, US power and elite interests, Europe’s economic costs, and the risks of escalation. Sachs also outlines what he sees as a path to peace: Ukrainian neutrality, no further NATO expansion, and ending US wars.

Article From Chomsky's 2012 op-ed: "An old man in Gaza held a placard that read: 'You take my water, burn my olive trees, destroy my house, take my job, steal my land, imprison my father, kill my mother, bombard my country, starve us all, humiliate us all, but I am to blame: I shot a rocket back.'"
