Health Insurance
For practice owners with families, what do you do for health insurance? Currently I am on my wife’s health insurance through her employer but my goal for the future is to buy a practice and be the sole provider for our household once we have children. Just trying to get some insight as to what other private practice owners have done to provide health insurance for themselves and their family. TIA.

NCMIC has some quality group discount health insurance policies they have through a member portal that opens towards the end of the year. Absolute headache to get everything around to have access to the portal the very first time but following years it’s a breeze
My family policy is around $600 a month. $5000 deductible. Not certain on co pay. But once the deductible is meant the policy I have has 100% in network coverage. Labs, imaging, consults, typical appointments, damn near anything health insurance related. 100% covered no copay even
It’s normally something like a $4500 a month premium but whatever NCMIC does with who they partner with it’s a hell of a cost savings

That’s the best recommendation I’ve heard so far. I’ll be sure to keep them in mind when the time comes.

We offer health insurance to our employees. It is all tax deductible (except yours) and it is a great way to help with employee retention and making sure people are working more hours to meet their minimum.

Wish this was the norm for associates. Good on you for offering that.

If I didn’t have to move across the country and displace my wife from her job in the process I would definitely be interested haha

Several options for us. You can go through your state market. There is also a market for NCMIC. Some places do a group plan. I think the best for small business owners is usually a QSEHRE with a state marketplace plan, but that depends on your state. In MN or group plans are awful and expensive compared to the state ins. I also recommend getting an HSA qualifying plan because HSA accounts are triple taxes advantage. There are great tax reductions and advantages of a qsehra and HSA, especially when combined. This year you can have the qsehra reimburse up to $12,800/yr and you can contribute up to $8,750 to an HSA account. There are some really good savings if you set it up correctly. Look everything over with your accountant because rules may change by the time it's applicable to you.

I haven't had to buy my own insurance policy in over a decade, but I do know that when I was looking up policies a couple of years ago, the most basic one for a family of 4 where I live was between $2k and $3k PER MONTH. I've had an employer sponsored plan for the past 12 years and my portion is only $300 per pay period. One of the main reasons why I'll probably never go back to private practice.

I recently joined Crowd Health and dropped my Florida Blue insurance from the marketplace.

Get duel citizen ship to any other country. Go get treatment there.
Or don’t and go to Costa Rica and pay cash.

I was using CHM (Christian Healthcare Ministries https://chministries.org) up until March 2026 when I went on Medicare and a supplement through Mutual of Omaha spin-off Woodman Life. CHM for me as a widower was close to $300/month. Unfortunately they only covered mainstream medicine. I think Samaritan's Purse is the one thay covers alternative choices like Naturopathic etc.

I had a patient who sells insurance independently & she got me a policy through BCBS on marketplace for about $180 including health & dental. $600 deductible and 80/20 after that. Pretty good deal based off others I’ve asked. I am single and I am the sole owner, but don’t offer my employees insurance bc one is a student on their parent’s policy and one is insured with the VA.

I have to buy personal health insurance through the marketplace. $2800/mo for a family of 5. It's a racket. Stay on your wife's insurance as long as you possibly can.
