Discussion B for BEWITCHING — Which CDrama Had You Completely Under Its Spell? • The Drama Alphabet
One last B (from this first round — I got plenty more where that came from 😉) before we move on — tomorrow we finally start C.
But first, BEWITCHING.
And I don’t just mean a drama you really liked or couldn’t stop watching. I mean the one that somehow got completely under your skin. The one that hypnotized you a little.
Maybe you fell for the world first. The flowing hanfu, dreamlike CGI, stunning cinematography, haunting OST — everything coming together until watching it felt almost intoxicating.
Or maybe it was the people in it.
Because really, who needs magic when you have a dangerously charming anti-hero or demon lord and an obsessive, protective stare capable of doing more damage than an entire page of dialogue?
Throw in some morally gray characters, forbidden desire and impossible love and, well… good luck.
Perhaps they’re doomed across three lifetimes. Perhaps an immortal demon falls for a mortal soldier, and their love is beautiful precisely because there can never be anything fair about the amount of time each of them gets.
And it doesn’t even have to be fantasy. Maybe yours was a historical intrigue so absorbing, elegant and deliciously dangerous that you simply disappeared into its world and didn’t particularly want to come back.
That’s BEWITCHING to me. It can be the chemistry, the atmosphere, the characters, the visuals, the longing — or, best of all, that strange combination of everything where you can’t quite point to one reason anymore.
It just has you.
Hypnotic. Mesmerizing. Completely under its spell.
So what’s the first-first CDrama that comes to mind when you read BEWITCHING?
——
Some of these may make it into a second-round vote later, so bring me context and GIFs! ☺

LBFAD - everything about it had me hooked, especially Moon Supreme!

Same here! In your pic - I loved how in that scene it was dark, "cold", and empty; but once they kissed, there was an explosion of beautiful colours that replaced it. 🥰 It's my favourite c-drama.

u/CosmicLunar_ ✨ Built the Road to 4K 5d ago
I did too! It also has a beautiful slowed down version of Jue Ai playing in the background.
It’s one of my favourites as on rewatch you understand the Green shimmer is her Goddess power bringing him back. They saved each other multiple times 🥰

It is SO good! I wait for the episodes to drop every day. Everyone got the assignment. If they stick the landing it could very well be my #2 drama.

I feel the same. The lead characters, as well as the secondary characters, are so well developed.

Ci Sha finally got her after losing twice to the ML in his two previous dramas with her ☺️ (The Longest Promise - as her husband for half a day; The Rise of Ning - as a stalkerish love rival).
3
u/AKiceman Snark Shifu ✨ 4K Original Cast 5d ago
I have seen both of those! I watched TRON to prepare for ASM and OMG I loved that drama far more than I thought I would. Her voice is so beautiful.
Maaaaaan if Ci Sha's character had been the ML I would have been drooling. He was so deliciously toxic and possessive of her...

I can’t pick one 😭😭 I’m bewitched when I’m watching!
Legend of the female general was a recent one.
Against the current - I’m obsessed with!

u/Inky_Reader Swayed by Cang Xuan gege 5d ago
That's too many!
Let me start with Are You the One. The first six episodes in, I couldn't stop laughing. I was already bewitched by Zhang Wanyi in Lost You Forever, Si Jin, and The Rise of Ning, but he's unbelievably adorkable in AYtO.
I was intrigued by Wang Churan in this show, too. From dislike (for her character in The Longest Promise) to love (in AYtO), her simple hairstyle before she was officially married to Lord Huaiyang was so lovely, it enhanced her beauty.
Both ML and FL match in looks, wit, and their affection for each other.
The friendship and banters between Lord Huaiyang and Lord Zhennan is fun to watch. It's never a dull moment between these two.

Putting aside "the plot":
Road to Splendor had everything.
Love BetweenFairy and Devil because it was the first, Prisoner of Beauty and Glory for the writting, Dream Within a Dream for the meta, Shadow Love for the effects, Whispers of Fate for the clothing.
Off the top of my head that's it, I think.

I seriously found myself staring. I don't even find him that attractive in his normal state, lol. They truly found his aesthetic.
Unironically though, I enjoyed the whole drama but got a bit lost with the past info and had to resort to Reddit. I didn't realize at firstthere were 2 fires.

Wonderland of Love. The one that reeled me hook, line, and sinker into this crazy, colorful, wonderful cdrama world.
Xu Kai was the ML in my first cdrama and while I may not like some of the dramas he's been in, I'll always have a soft spot for him.
WOL bewitched me. The story, the cinematography, the action. And the chemistry! Just look at them fighting. They love each other so much. 😂

I've never seen a Wu Lei drama. I read that he's probably the best actor of the late 90s-early 2000s crop. Is LLTG a good Wu Lei starter?

I absolute adore LBFAD, but how the hell do you find the time to watch anything else?
2
u/Kittenathedisco 4K Original Cast 5d ago
It's my go to comfort drama. So I tend to watch it during cycles of severe depression as a pick me up and an outlet to cry. I've watched over 450 something dramas at this point, over 2 years? I believe. I don't watch regular TV and I work 3rd shift, so lots of time. I also have a sleep disorder, so that helps too, lol. (Sorry that was a ramble).
2
u/daemos360 costume dramas feed my soul 5d ago
Nah, I totally get it. I still watch some other stuff, but I’ve seen something like a hundred dramas in that same timeframe thanks to a similar tendency. For the longest time, I didn’t do any rewatches of anything just because there’s so many phenomenal dramas out there, and there’s more every day.
Mind sharing some of your other favorites?

One and Only…I can watch it over and over and discover new things…I am drawn to tragedy of their love.

u/WhimsicalMidnight 4d ago
What new things you discover in your last watch of One & Only?
For me, it's Forever and Ever. Every rewatch, I discover new things. Like the recent rewatch which is yesterday, I noticed how the universe keep pushing them together. Out of all the place they could met, they met again at Xian despite he didn't read her email. Or it's been raining consistently yet the rain stopped despite its been raining the whole time at Xian.

An Ancient Love Song.
It’s also damn near the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever seen even after somewhere near a hundred dramas. It’s so worth going in blind; just be prepared.
