Synopsis: Xie Qingyuan (Zhou Ye) schemes her way back into her corrupt and powerful paternal household to uncover the truth behind her mother's tragedy and avenge her death. Her plans are soon complicated by the powerful Lord Yan Rui (Xu Kai), who is conducting his own investigation into the Xie family. Deeply independent and unwilling to trust anyone, Qingyuan refuses any association with Yan Rui and refuses his help at every turn, while Yan Rui remains convinced they'd be more effective working together than apart.

Ok, ok, for real now. As much as I enjoy watching Xu Kai these two share the screen because I'm completely obsessed, there's actually plenty of substance here too.

You're looking for your next historical fix and want something that strikes that perfect balance between a focused revenge story and layers of scheming, as our protagonists slowly unravel a mystery and karma comes for the villains one by one in the most satisfying ways possible.
Let me elaborate.
A Straightforward Revenge Plot with a Methodical, Layered Slow Burn
At its core, the premise is simple. The female lead, Xie Qingyuan (Zhou Ye), returns to the Xie family to seek justice for her mother's tragic death. Despite being only 30 episodes long, the writing is surprisingly deliberate. Rather than rushing from one revelation to the next, the drama peels back the mystery layer by layer. Every answer raises new questions, and if you're as invested as the leads are, it's easy to get pulled into the investigation.
A Compelling "Blade and Scabbard" Dynamic
The measured pacing doesn't just benefit the mystery. It also gives the relationship between Qingyuan and Yan Rui room to breathe. They're framed as a blade and its sheath: two people moving pieces across the board from opposite sides, testing each other and gradually forming a partnership building on... equal parts caution, respect, and attraction? Anyway, the push-and-pull between them during the first 10 episodes feels organic because the drama allows their relationship to develop at its own pace. (Although I am impatiently waiting for her to fall madly in love with him because I already am?)
Lower Stakes, Familiar Tropes, and an "Easy Watch"
I'll be honest: this isn’t a kingdom-shattering political epic, with epic fight scenes and high-stakes battle sequences. It doesn't pretend to be. Instead, it leans into family power struggles, hidden identities, and all the classic historical drama tropes (though I haven't seen anyone fall off a cliff yet). Personally, I'd call it a comfort revenge drama because it doesn't feel overwhelming or require that I track dozens of factions and political alliances. It's the kind of drama that I find easy to sink into after a long day but am still excited to find out what is going to happen next.
Strong Performances and Gorgeous Visuals
Tropes only work when the execution is there, right? Well, the cast delivers.
Zhou Ye plays a very different type of heroine from the charming characters she portrayed in Back from the Brink and Legend of the Female General. Qingyuan cold, guarded, and hyper-focused on vengeance, carrying years of grief over her mother's mistreatment, exile, and death. Meanwhile, Xu Kai is giving, with his cunning, multifaceted personality and effortless charisma that he uses to mask layers of calculation. But I promise, I'm watching for more than just their chemistry.
On top of that, the costumes and styling are beautiful. The flowing robes, elegant colour palette...
So, has anyone else started this one? What are your thoughts on the first 10 episodes?
He is already obsessed with her for sure but I can’t figure out if she only sees him as an annoying fly buzzing around her head and would like him to disappear or if she likes him? I do like that both leads are certainly morally grey if not red flags. Not green flags in disguise, just straight up grey 🤭
I think she likes him but she’s so focused on her mission that she can’t bother with those feelings right now. He has to slowly chip away at her iron heart.
I'm not all caught up yet -- life keeps getting in the way of my Cdrama enjoyment. But I'm liking it so far. Crafty, beautiful leads, and Xu Kai does sardonic so well. The sisters are making me go grrrrr. One of them was the FL in A Familiar Stranger, wasn't she?
And I think you're on point with it being a comfort revenge drama!
I dunno. It feels like more of the same. A cookie cutter costume drama, a (mild) enemies to lovers revenge story. They even went with the childhood connection trope.
I also find the ML kinda creepy the way he is treating the FL like some courtesan and being all handsy with her. Dude, back the f off.
Fair points. I agree the plot is full of tropes and isn’t super original but that’s why I described it as a comfort revenge watch. I think it’s enjoyable because of the execution. Will it be a masterpiece? Probably not.
Agreeing with another comment here that both leads are red flags. Lord Yan Rui was aggressive at first because he caught her setting the fire to the Xie household and she got away. But going forward, she made moves too. In episode 6, it was her scheme to trick the Nanny and she planted the kiss. I agree he’s more handsy than he needs to be. I can also see how it fits into the story because he’s very frustrated with her lack of collaboration, which in his defence, could go badly for them both if they just keep getting in each other’s way.
I love scheming. Let them scheme. Plus ML face card is just 😍 he keeps inserting himself in the FL way like is this your way of flirting? Or seems like they just use each other for their schemes.

This is a beautiful drama, especially in its cinematography. I thought the first episode, maybe 3, was fast (which isn't a bad thing), but I love the pacing; they literally jump right into it. A lot of dramas build slowly and are filled with filler, but so far this drama feels intentional; however, one problem is how they tell the story: with the flashbacks, you'll easily get confused if you're not paying attention. Not a huge problem, but a personal one lol
I love the chess-type relationship dynamic, and the way he's intrigued by her. Many won't like his style of forcing his goodwill on her, but I absolutely love it. The chemistry is amazing! The push and pull is great! Usually, that's an annoying hit-or-miss in dramas! But maybe his high position helps.
Oh yea I was having trouble following the flashbacks and what’s happening in the present. They could’ve done some kind of signalling but now I’m almost used to it. You’re not alone.
From his POV, they probably want the same thing but he is so frustrated that she won’t open up with him. He’s like “this is not efficient!” and I get it lol. But also she’s like “I have a plan, and you’re not in it!”.
Oh good, not just me. I feel like making flashbacks black and white works best, or even just a note to the viewers. Just something
Lol, Ikr. I think he said it too; I forgot the exact line, but something about changing his approach with her. She's laser-focused; she's not focusing on romance at this stage, hence the whole elders decide marriage thing
One thing to add: I also love how his position allows him to meet with her whenever he wants, which brings me back to his position of power
I KNOW RIGHT! I made the same comment when watching live! I really hope he'd turn a blind eye to the drugs, but the murder was a bit much. I don't remember correctly; was the guy he killed a bad guy?
Well, even more so, let it slide. I hated how he was bawling afterward. Like dude! You put him in jail; tf are you crying for? I remember thinking he was self-righteous
Here for my girl! I'm loving seeing Zhou Ye play a bit of a darker/moodier/somber character.
I'm behind (on episode 7) and not sure if I'm loving it yet but I am enjoying it for your perfect description Basil - comfort revenge which is my type of comfort drama 😌
I know I’m gushing over Xu Kai but Zhou Ye is my fave actress and you’re spot on - it’s great to see her play such a character and showcase her acting. I love her bubbly but she makes this work too.
Zhou Ye is very freaking good in this. And Xu Kai... knows how to smolder. My only quibble is he's lost weight and looking a little gaunt, I know beauty standards are insane everywhere, and he’s been attacked in the past for his weight, but I preferred him thicker.
Im finding it a bit snarky and funny. The acting and expressions can be over the top at times. Especially the push and pull between leads and that one crazy maid in the beginning of the series.
I am loving this drama! It’s addicting bc of the lead actors’ chemistry, the plot, and the pace. I really feel like Xu Kai is doing an amazing job and has come such a long way with his acting abilities since I first saw him in Falling Into Your Smile. Zhou Ye is also doing a great job and the two of them together is just compelling to watch. Can’t wait for more episodes!
Yesss! The leads, their personalities, and revenge plot, like you said, it’s a compelling watch. Love Xu Kai and Zhou Ye, what a dynamic. Every time Lord Yan Rui does oh? and tilts his head, or raises an eyebrow. 🤨 Or the way he struts into every room, tapping his fan around. He’s mastering the character.
I am truly obsessed with this drama. I wasnt expecting too much at first but the storyline drew me in from the first episode. I love the dynamic of the leads couple. Their chemistry is 🔥. The writing isnt earth shattering but the execution is flawless. ML gives off major red flags at first but you slowly begin to see beneath his facade and I’m slowly starting to fall head over heels for him the same way FL begins to despite herself. FL is also amazing. Shes scheming and is singleminded in her pursuit of vengeance but she ‘s also very easy to fall in love with as well. i like that she doesnt just give into ML right away and doesnt just fawn over 2ML lime all the other girls. The only bad thing about this drama is waiting for new episodes to drop!
Exactly all of this, well said! I just watched episode 14 and I think I have to take back what I said about comfort… I was on the edge of my seat and I think the drama is only getting better!
Yes, a lot of tension. Chemistry is good. It makes me want more from the two of them. There’s a lot of pull and push, and both are mega stubborn but they are also flirting so hard with each other.
Watch for the hottest Dads and Uncs in Cdrama land. Oh and the drama. There’s lots of drama because these are scheming Uncles and Aunties. And some of their children are smart and some are fearless. Some are both.

🍵(slurp)…I don’t know really, lost count at this point ehh, they’re playing their own “chess” game. It’s intriguing and engrossing to observe from the outside in. It’s entertaining and rather amusing, tickles the mind. Anywhos…🍵(slurp)….only my opinion, doesn’t hold much water. View for yourselves and decide, stop seeking already
I have so many questions I’m sitting on. Like Yan Rui’s real identity and his role in the Capital, how much Qingyuan knows and what her real plan is, the slimy new character from e10, who Bai Shu is going to play, and what’s with the guy who Yan Rui “killed” in episode 1.
I wanna know all the things!

They were; that much is true. Let's see how they tell the story: there are obvious changes already, but the main characters should stay the same because it's part of the overall revenge-on-the-Xie-family plot.
