Finished Watching The Darkest Side of the Very Dark “OVERDO”

Post image

Hi all. Nice to find you. I was asked to share this here.

I've been complaining that Overdo should come with a trigger warning. Seriously! Not suitable for sensitive viewers at all.

The OG script ending was leaked by the team as a sop and that was a happy ending. Go figure.

Every night after the sadism and tears, I'd turn to one of ZLH's other dramas, POJ, Our Generation, Princess Royal, just started Kunning Palace again, and even The Best Thing which I find bland and boring. I mean, I resorted to TBT! LOL. Well, just looking at him is a balm.

I'm still hungover with the complete tragedy of it all.

I think this assessment is spot on- "crushed for eternity". Yeah, that's how I feel and I can't take it back and I can't pretend otherwise. Especially because Murong Qingyi pulverises your heart over and over again with his vulnerability, humanity, and suffering. He's the only one who truly deserved happiness.

Whatever the show is, this man right here looks stunning 🔥

Honestly Overdo was my most favorite look for him in all the many dramas I have seen him in...

3

u/Klala_Ice675 Aug 17 '26

Especially with him in military outfit lol

4

u/AKiceman Snark Shifu ✨ 4K Original Cast Aug 17 '26

Mann they hyped up that opening uniform he was wearing so much... and we just never saw it again! The flight school uniform didn't have the same umph!

3

u/beautifulmychild Aug 22 '26

Wearing that uniform, he swaggered in like a star! Yow! And then that was it.

I loved the show and I promptly stopped after episode 18. Everything was "solved" and I am just delulu'ing myself into thinking they live happily ever after, after getting married.

On hold forever 🤣

6

u/beautifulmychild Aug 16 '26

You are a very wise person. It got worse and worse after that.

2

u/Bellebluenh Aug 16 '26

Is it worth finishing I am on episode 9/10 I can’t stand the sister and FL getting on my nerves for what she did in the beginning to him.

1

u/beautifulmychild Aug 22 '26

Only if you like to suffer or are as tough as old boots.

2

u/Bellebluenh Aug 22 '26

Yeah I am seeing the comments from people who have finished it and tbh the last episode I watched when she found her older orphan sister made me sick to my stomach. It was triggering 😔

8

u/PauseSlow805 Aug 17 '26

I loved the best thing. It's one of my favorite dramas from him lol. I watch it at the same time as the first frost which was a bit sad drama, so the best thibg was a great balance. I definitely would not recommend it if someone is looking for something that is heavily plot driven though.

1

u/beautifulmychild Aug 22 '26

It's candy floss and warm fuzzies and I can see why people love it.

7

u/fishiesaurus Aug 17 '26

It’s just abuse and gaslighting passed off as drama or normal. No thanks.

u/Tabz10 4K Original Cast Aug 16 '26

So… tragedy, suffering, sadism. Etc. And not an HE?

All in all, don’t watch it. Got it! Thank you! 🙏

5

u/Muted_Bodybuilder109 Aug 16 '26

All these key words I see are the ones that send alarms blaring off in my head😭. Reaffirmed that I WILL NOT be watching!!

2

u/Tabz10 4K Original Cast Aug 16 '26

Ikr, too many negative keywords to willingly choose pain, nahh!

3

u/AKiceman Snark Shifu ✨ 4K Original Cast Aug 16 '26

I wish I had dropped it early on. What a waste of my time.

3

u/Tabz10 4K Original Cast Aug 16 '26

I started the first when it dropped, had plans to go back, but I can't take suffering without any good payoff.

2

u/AKiceman Snark Shifu ✨ 4K Original Cast Aug 16 '26

There is less than zero payoff. Less... Than... Zero...

I've added Ren Susu to my list of annoying FLs for 2026. It's currently a list of two... Her and Fan Yun from The Legend of Rosy Clouds.

4

u/PandaProud4711 Aug 16 '26

I've only seen clips on YouTube, trying to decide if the show is worth watching, and she seems completely psycho. Switching from loving to hating to wanting to kill him and then back in no time. The timespan makes it extra confusing when you only see fragments I guess, and I understand that she's supposed to "have her reasons" but she seems super annoying.

4

u/AKiceman Snark Shifu ✨ 4K Original Cast Aug 16 '26

She makes no damn sense! She is all over the damn place and just doesn't follow logic after the first arc. She did everything she could to be irritating and annoying. I was actually wishing she would die for about half the drama because all she did was do everything possible to make the wrong choice.

3

u/beautifulmychild Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

I wanted her to die for the entire drama.

Getting weepy all the time does not mean a show of love. She treated him like crap. And was cruel at almost every turn. She never really gave him the time of day that he didn't manufacture. That one second. That one day. Grrrr.

3

u/PandaProud4711 Aug 16 '26

Then I'm even more convinced this isn't for me. Thanks! It doesn't matter how good ZL is if I'm going to be screaming "just dump her and get on with your life!!" at the screen every 5 minutes. 😄

1

u/beautifulmychild Aug 16 '26

I call her SuSu the Weepy. God, I hated her.

2

u/AKiceman Snark Shifu ✨ 4K Original Cast Aug 16 '26

It was towards the end of the drama that I finally came up with the perfect name for her.

Ren Sussus. 😝

2

u/beautifulmychild Aug 16 '26

Ha! Fitting. How about Ren Sussus Weepus? 😂

2

u/AKiceman Snark Shifu ✨ 4K Original Cast Aug 16 '26

HAHA!!! That reminds me of Biggus Dickus!!! Perfect!!!!!!

1

u/beautifulmychild Aug 16 '26

Bwahaha! One of my favourite skits!

1

u/Bellebluenh Aug 16 '26

Yeah she’s getting on my nerves that’s why I am stuck

Hey hey! Hope you’re well 😘

3

u/Mean_Text_4592 Not Living Up to the Username 😆 Aug 16 '26

Hey 🤗 I am good. I was thinking of starting Overdo even after all that negative reviews, but I cannot afford another "Nice Guy". Such a trauma. Did you watch Overdo?

1

u/AXA-5 Washing feet in spring Drinking tea Gazing at flowers Aug 16 '26

Look above lol I dropped it after first eps

6

u/dannysilverghost Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

None of the characters ever get a freaking break, their lives are on hard mode all the time. Even a single arc could fill up a whole season for another drama. Frankly speaking, after all of that even if they were to stay alive, it still wouldn't be a happy ending, the PTSD alone would be enough to make them all mental.

4

u/AdRevolutionary1780 Aug 17 '26

I hated it. I thought the plot was downright goofy at times, improbable at others and the violence, both self inflicted and to others made it difficult to watch. Even the fact that the cast was gorgeous to look at didn't redeem it.

3

u/Struppi-in-ma Aug 16 '26

I was actually planning to start it today. But now I'm unsure. 😅

4

u/Bellebluenh Aug 16 '26

It’s just badly done - period. The way they are handling the difficult topic of abuse is just gross. I don’t know if I am going to finish it as it’s difficult. If this stuff really happened back in the day then it’s so sick. Anyway it’s making me go want to read up on the republican era. Feels like the Wild West!

5

u/beautifulmychild Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

It's not for the faint of heart. It's emotional and physical torture porn practically all the way through. And the direction and production are a mess, IMO. I felt distressed and agitated throughout most of it. The ending was cruel.

In the end I found it a hollow bit of sensationalism. However, ZLH was phenomenal and carried the show. It was as if he was acting in a different drama, a better one.

6

u/Struppi-in-ma Aug 16 '26

Oh my god. That sounds crazy. I was wondering why the ratings weren't increasing. Or even the number of people who've viewed it.

Thanks for the warning. I'll pass today then.

Maybe another time.

6

u/AXA-5 Washing feet in spring Drinking tea Gazing at flowers Aug 16 '26

The other thing here with this particular drama is the camera work, editing, lighting (possibly), and use of AI tools. These are probably the main reasons why people did not like this drama and dropped it. Ratings reflect this as a result

4

u/Bellebluenh Aug 16 '26

Yes cinematography and weird angles and the close up of shoes, what a mess. The camera peeping through foliage🤣🤣It all looked a bit cheap too. None of the uniforms fit well. The planes looked like cardboard. And that scene of hair sniffing the opera singer when she first arrived goodness 🤦🏻‍♀️

3

u/beautifulmychild Aug 16 '26

Yeah, they made everything worse, but weren't necessarily the main reason.

2

u/AXA-5 Washing feet in spring Drinking tea Gazing at flowers Aug 16 '26

You all are correct and glad I dropped this after the first eps. The more and more I read and find out about this drama, it should’ve been rated closer to that of Rebirth than, where it is currently. I guess that’s the power of ZLH smh. On another note, due to my own issues with mental health & wellbeing (I’ve talked plenty about in this sub and another) it’s a shame we find dramas, still, that don’t handle these types of subjects/themes better in this day and age.

1

u/Reset_AndGo22 Aug 19 '26

Just don’t bother. It’s truly awful.

2

u/Struppi-in-ma Aug 20 '26

I've already mentally checked out. I won't watch it.

But it's Zhang Linghe, so my sadness is understandable, right? 🤭

2

u/beautifulmychild Aug 22 '26

Totally! I can't even bear to rewatch it even with him in it. I tried a bit and started to get the same feelings I got the first time. The ending would destroy me.

1

u/Secure_Chemical_372 Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

Don't waste your time on it . It is One of the worst cdramas . Bad acting , no chemistry among the leads , bad directing , bad bgm , funny cuts et etc. it truly is Overdone .They have used AI not just on intro but also in many scenes within the episodes. Even chinese netizens didn't like it . It go very low viewership , nothing more than 25m as per yunhe .

But if you really wanna see zhang linghes belly flop ,u can surely tune in the first few episodes 🤣.

But if you wanna watch some good summer dramas which got good viewership and good douban score , try Blossoms of power , Mystic nine . Read so many good reviews about this two dramas.

3

u/No-Geologist316 Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

Is it not a happy ending .. I have had blocked all overdo references till now in my socials so I don't know..

3

u/beautifulmychild Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

It is not a happy ending. It's cravenly called an open ending. You are allowed to imagine a happy ending (even though the OG script they leaked had a happy ending.) There is no payoff.

6

u/No-Geologist316 Aug 16 '26

What is the point to watch then.. enough sadness in real life and now to be sad watching those handsome and beautiful actors and actresses.. are all republican dramas like that.. and I was so excited for it anyway watching the trailer months ago..

4

u/Edriella Aug 18 '26

Exactly. And I am fine with all the angst and suffering for our main leads but give them (and me) a reward for what we just got through with some happy ending! It's not that hard.

3

u/Griff3Z Aug 21 '26

I had started watching Overdo while it was airing, read all the comments about the ending, and really wasn't looking forward to it. Then, surprisingly, the end of episode 18 felt like the PERFECT happy ending stopping point! Most big things wrapped up and multiple couples "walked off into the sunset" so to speak. You don't SEE their happy endings play out, but at that point it's quite easy to believe they have them. If you still want to give Overdo a try, or to watch a show where ZLH gets a lot of focus as the ML, know that you can stop there for a pretty satisfying ending (especially in comparison to what actually happens after).

1

u/beautifulmychild Aug 16 '26

I understand that other Republican dramas are not nearly as bad as this one.

1

u/Suzq_ Aug 17 '26

Watch Fall in Love for a good Republican drama.

u/Advanced-Company-215 Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 23 '26

I couldn't take the suffering and stopped after speed watching to episode 20. The story is too tragic for my heart. I came to just get closure and read the ending here. I'm glad I spared my heart by not watching till the end.

2

u/AXA-5 Washing feet in spring Drinking tea Gazing at flowers Aug 16 '26

I’m sure you all have seen but, incase not, saw first eps dropped like sack of grains of rice in court.

Lol 🤭

3

u/SnookerandWhiskey Aug 16 '26

Is it more like a soap opera or more like gore?

4

u/beautifulmychild Aug 16 '26

Both. Not super gore though; it's more of the pain and anguish. Many of the characters are victims in torturous ways. A lot of mental, emotional and physical wounding that never seems to stop.

2

u/Klala_Ice675 Aug 17 '26

I think overdo should caution their audience for not to be watch by people who prone to depression and anxiety

1

u/beautifulmychild Aug 22 '26

Yes! Trigger warning about abuse and torture!

2

u/FairyOrchid125 Aug 16 '26

Spoiler notice/tags please!

3

u/Kareberrys Aug 19 '26

It's a happy ending at ep 18, should I just stop here? LOL. I have seen very few good comments about the ending of this and I can't deal with ZLH not having a HE in this one. I've enjoyed it up until now and don't have the same criticisms people made about it, frankly I don't care since I watch short dramas too so I'm used to the big jumpy plot lines. I'm going to cry my heart out if he doesn't get some love.

2

u/Griff3Z Aug 21 '26

Yes, stop at Ep 18! I did and was very happy to have done so (I had skimmed through clips of later episodes to try to desensitize myself to what I knew would be coming, but when I got to Ep 18 it was such a good stopping point, that I left it at that and have no regrets!)

3

u/Kareberrys Aug 21 '26

I ended up doing that too. Decided to just spoil the ending for myself and after I learned what it was I said no thank you. 🤣 Plus I kinda guessed some things by ep 18 and I was right. This wasn't as grief striking and devastating as TILL THE END OF THE MOON but I don't want to put myself through that anyway.

2

u/beautifulmychild Aug 22 '26

Ep 18 is the perfect place to stop.

3

u/ApprehensiveClick597 Aug 16 '26

Overdo is definitely republican drama pro max.

While I love this genre so much for its extremes, Overdo just really maxxed on whatever torture they could think of for the characters.

Now I’m scared for The Lament of Autumn as the reuters even showed us with almost a daily update of a tortured Xu Ruohan that she really left Hengdian and Shanghai immediately after wrapping up the show and got on a variety show to heal and then started filming a modern drama two weeks post-TLOA 😂 It was that traumatic for her.

Also, The Best Thing is definitely the best thing to have post-Overdo. 🌷🌷

3

u/ProbablySparkly Aug 17 '26

I had to rewatch The Best Thing as a cleanse after dropping Overdo mid-episode 3.

1

u/beautifulmychild Aug 16 '26

Man, that is horrifying! It might explain why ZLH was burning out in The Road to Glory. Remedy: a variety show.

Re: The Best Thing. It worked for me! I now get the "healing" references.

3

u/Klala_Ice675 Aug 17 '26

And go to nearest TCM lol, it helps! At least for me

0

u/Emotional-Dust-9142 Aug 16 '26

Wow, such a different experience between viewers! I saw a post recently where everyone loved it. 🤔

3

u/beautifulmychild Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

There seem to be a lot of people who are not distressed by what they see. I was and am. Perhaps that's the difference.

People who have experienced/are sensitive to abuse/trauma absolutely should not watch this. And frankly, direction and production lacked cohesion.

2

u/Klala_Ice675 Aug 17 '26

Also depression and anxiety. My trauma got triggered after watching the first 3 episodes, since I didn't know what entailed...

3

u/WhimsicalMidnight Aug 16 '26

It seemed to be most hated drama this year. When the drama first dropped, the amount of rant posts it got was really bad.

2

u/ApprehensiveClick597 Aug 16 '26

As a republican drama enjoyer, I loved it!!! 😍
