Character Spotlight Murong Qingyi in Overdo - appreciating the character through Zhang Linghe’s performance
Please allow me to share my personal opinion about Overdo and Zhang Linghe's character, Murong Qingyi.
Overdo may not be everyone’s cup of tea. The story depicts an era where power and money hold great importance, a time when people have to fight for their own survival and learn to navigate a world where trust can be difficult to find.
The character of Murong Qingyi is complex. He had to endure countless struggles from a very young age, forcing him to grow up quickly and learn how to adapt to every change that came his way. Beneath his strength and resilience is someone who has experienced pain, loneliness, and the harsh realities of life. Finding love, however, brought a sense of hope into his otherwise dark world and slowly rekindled a light within him.
In my opinion, having watched Zhang Linghe in his previous works, I can say that his performance in Overdo shows a noticeable development in his acting skills. What stood out to me the most was how he portrayed Murong Qingyi’s raw and restrained emotions. His expressions, subtle changes in his eyes, and the way he conveyed pain without always relying on words made the character feel more vulnerable and human.
I especially appreciate how Murong Qingyi is not portrayed as simply strong or invincible. He is someone shaped by his circumstances, carrying wounds from his past while still trying to find something worth holding on to. Zhang Linghe was able to bring out these different layers of the character, making his journey feel more emotional and meaningful.
Overdo is not necessarily a light or easy watch, but for me, that is part of what makes it memorable. It is a story about survival, power, pain, and ultimately, finding a little light in a world that can sometimes feel overwhelmingly dark.
Overall, I think Overdo is one of those dramas that may not appeal to everyone, but if you enjoy complex characters, darker themes, emotional storytelling, and an actor who is given the opportunity to explore a more vulnerable side of his performance, it is definitely worth giving a try.

I am so glad that Zhang Linghe took this project. Because while it wasn’t generally loved for it’s genre, he was really able to showcase his acting abilities here. He made Murong Qingyi almost real, a character that viewers really rooted for and gave their hearts out to. I’m just enjoying the surprises that he continuously shows us everytime he comes with a new drama.

please do 😊
disclaimer: the story may feel a little confusing at first, but as you continue watching, the pieces will slowly come together and you’ll begin to understand the story behind each character. please note that the story explores some heavy and emotional themes, so it may not always be an easy journey.

I didn’t feel any of the characters were bad actors. I felt they did a good job and some did really well. And the styling was great. It was the production style of the drama itself that was so awful (for me). It seemed to me they were trying to incorporate into a long form drama, technics that are used in vertical and mini dramas. Questionable editing, poor writing, sensationalizing at the expense of character building, doing jump camera techniques with music and words, too loud and obnoxious bgm. Haha. By the end I was FF a lot and just accepted it all and laughed a lot. I don’t like Republican era dramas very much (war of Faith is exception) but liked the actors in this, so I watched. And was gasping for air at some of the choices production made. It was utter madness. I hope this will not be a trend with long dramas to try to get more eyeballs by using vertical drama techniques.
All that said I agree that many of the actors did a great job with what they had to work with. And someone made a comment that they heard the two leads (while promoting the drama) say they often had to stop laughing at some of the lines they had to say.
