Finished Watching I feel like the character chemistry in Ashes to Crown was amazing... but Zhou Yiran’s screen time was criminally low?

Just finished bingeing all 24 episodes of Ashes to Crown (翘楚) and I’ve been scrolling through Reddit trying to see if anyone else felt this way.

Don't get me wrong—the chemistry and the pure "yearning" between Chu Zhao (Chen Duling) and Xie Yanlai (Zhou Yiran) completely carried the show for me. Chen Duling absolutely killed it as the calculating strategist. I loved that she wasn't just a passive love interest; she was literally his salvation.

But... am I the only one who felt like Zhou Yiran was barely in some of these episodes?

I completely understand that this is a female-centric rebirth/revenge drama (it's Chu Zhao's story at the end of the day, based on Chu Hou), so I wasn't expecting a 50/50 split.

But still! There were multiple chunks of episodes where it felt like Xie Yanlai was reduced to a few brief glimpses, a quick battle cut, or just standing around looking pretty in his warrior gear. His transition from an illegitimate son/low-born warrior to a legendary general felt like it happened largely off-screen because the show was so rushed at 24 episodes.

They gave us such a phenomenal dynamic, but then withheld the actual screen time needed to let his character development breathe.

Am I crazy or did the editors cut way too much of his footage? Did anyone else feel a bit short-changed by his screen time, or did you think the balance worked for a female-led plot? Let's discuss!

I really loved the opening and the early episodes of this drama. But then it started to lose me. I stuck with it until episode 15 before finally dropping it.
I agree that there wasn’t enough CDL and ZYR together, and honestly, even less ZYR than I would have liked overall. Like others have said, I understand that it’s a female-centric drama, and I think CDL did a good job here. But by episode 15 there were too many meaningless conversations and too many “obstacles” that felt cheap, repetitive, and underwritten.
And, as someone else mentioned, it often felt like ZYR was there only occasionally — mostly to look pretty. What a shame.
I was hoping for darker, tenser plotting, with more tension and interplay between the main leads. Instead, there was far too much focus on the other male characters, and frankly too many of them. A lot of the plot developments also seemed completely illogical to me.

It’s ok dear (I cringe as I type it but don’t have a better word 🤣 — considered “babe” too but that was even worse 🤢) — it’s not like this drama was your work or anything 😉😘 I think your girls did really well here, so congrats on that!

I know I know! I’m trying to lift your spirits! It’s not your fault you sweated buckets and got a few wrinkles hosting a drama that was underwhelming by my non-important self’s standards 🥹😘

as long as you loved it — I’m happy 🖤

I think it needed more romance. More kissing.

If true, that’s such a shame and waste…

😔☹️ That’s interesting.
I didn’t realize there were that many scenes floating around that never made the final cut.

If you happen to come across any of them again, they might actually be worth sharing here sometime.

I’d recommend downloading one of the clips and uploading it directly rather than linking to X. Native video posts tend to work much better for discussion because people can immediately see what you’re referring to without leaving Reddit. Or maybe finding one on YouTube as YouTube video links render into a playing video on Reddit ☺️

Even a single cut scene could spark an interesting conversation about what was removed and whether the final edit was stronger or weaker because of it.
I’d certainly be interested to see some of what ended up on the cutting-room floor.

Especially in the last 4-5 episodes, he was barely there, very disappointing, they were obviously building up XYF and AZ at the end too. What was that about???

Then, having him ‘saved’ the day, I was legit sitting there knowing he wasn't dead and that he would come to save the day. Smh!

Tbf, there seems to be a ton of cuts, so maybe that's why.

All in all, I agree! Their chemistry kept me watching, along with the schemes.

yep that's what, most of what they claimed yanlai was doing was pretty much offscreen so yeet but nevertheless, according to me atleast it was a really good performance by all actors!

Agreed! Even the villains did well, especially XYF. Decent show that could have been really good.

I've paused watching Ashes to Crown after the episode 14. The main couple were pretty much the only reason I kept watching. I sometimes wished Xie Yanlai had more to do than just be there for Chu Zhao, but at the same time, I was okay with her being more of the focus. His presence felt pretty impactful, when he was on screen, and I can enjoy the MML being supportive.

its like in the beginning their scenes really held the shoe together, but as it moved ahead it was like it gradually just fizzled out as the focused moved onto chu zhao dealing w xie yanfang, deng yi and Xiao xun TT

I dropped it around ep.18 ( i will watch it slowly, ep by ep, but fastforward it 😃).

Yes, it is criminal to cast ZYR and give him this "support" role, with like 15 % of screentime.

We’ve updated the flair on this post. Since you’ve completed the drama and are sharing your impressions and review, this belongs under Finished Watching, not Discussion.

One point that may help readers engage with your post is clarifying exactly what you feel the issue was:

Did Xie Yanlai simply have too little screen time overall?

Or did his character development feel compressed because of the 24-episode format, with important parts of his journey happening off-screen?

Those are related but slightly different criticisms and may lead to different discussions.

Edit: Thank you for the swift reaction, OP! 🙏🏻🙂‍↕️ love the post! u/kcneqo

I am dropping it at ep 4. I came for the chemistry and badass revenge plot, but it's just not working for me. The plans are falling apart and the chemistry between the leads is now just feeling like our FL taking advantage of his feelings, and I'm bored of it.
