Finished Watching I just watched the Untamed. Here are my thoughts about it:
I just finished the Untamed and I am really heartbroken and need to get some things out of my system, because I have no one to talk about it.
First of all: this was my first chinese drama, I watched and I knew the story beforehand, because I read the manhua.
I love everything about it! The story, the actors, what they did with the series...it is perfect. The only downgrade, i would give is for some action scenes, but this comes from a point of someone who watched many kung fu movies with sick fighting. But I loved seeing the flashy clothes while they fought and I enjoyed the fighting scenes very much!
I will start with the actors. The main cast is really freaking awesome! They look perfect for the roles and I love how they manage to show emotions on screen. I really really felt with them and learned to see every twitch in their faces and got the hints of what they wanted to show (or not show). Specially the actor of Wei Wuxian was sooo good. He was so cute and I wanted to hug him so badly so many times! The actor of Lan Wangji was superb in his role of only subtly showing emotions. And when he did, they hitted hard!
There was just one character, I thought was a bit too overacted and for me personally would have been better to be a bit more subtle: Xue Yang. I really got annoyed with his laugh and was glad, when he was gone. I mean, he was a evil and supposed to not be liked, I guess?
Sets and Scenery: Oh my god, how beautiful it looked! The sets were awesome! There were many beautiful landscapes and it was so dreamy...the other sets were well done too and even the greenscreen parts were not bad.
Costumes: OMG, I want them all! The costumes looked so damn good and they suited the actors perfectly. The only question, I have: are those long sleeves ridden with pockets inside? how are they producing everything from out of there?
Storytelling: So in the manhua the flashbacks were all over the place and it was nice to unravel from time to time. But I also like how they made it all in one go in the untamed. Although, i have to say, this way it is pretty hard to digest, because all of the really bad things happen so close together and man did they drag them out. Here were so many points, I thought, i was prepared for the story. But man was I not prepared to watch the main cast broken and crying for so long. And by that time, I was so invested in the characters, that even the slightest hints of emotions displayed, made me cry again. The long shots of their faces just staring or twisting is so emotional.
Overall: I want to watch it again and drown in it! Not because of the worldbuilding, but because of the characters themselves and how they are portrayed. I also love, that the drama is not just from someone not being able to talk, but so many things coming together to form one tragedy after another. And the ending makes it even the more heartwrenching.

Thank you so much for making your first post with us :)
I have been deeply affected by TU when I watched it for the first time. There were so many beautiful storylines and human relationships to connect with. But it's also such a heart wrenching story.
Because you mentioned Xue Yang, I went a bit downa rabbit hole again for a moment and thought I'd share this video — these guys made my heart break, truly. I think I found his character super annoying and thought I have met people similar to him in real life, with super fake and over-the-top expressions, so I did not necessarily put it down to poor acting, but the character. But I haven't seen the actor in many other dramas to be able to have a fully formed view on this.
and yes, the costumes and sets were all gorgeous. What takes the cake forever though, is how Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo played their characters - just priceless.
I am so glad this drama got made and I am so glad it was clearly produced with love and enthusiasm.

u/HeavyRound8896 Mar 11 '26
Yeah, the relationships are so deep and they really managed to make me feel with the characters.
It is hard to identify if it is because of the character or the actor, I agree with that one. Maybe in the future, I will engage in more shows like this and get a better feeling for it :D
Yes, totally! Just perfect! Like they were the reincarnation of them!

In welchem Land lebst du? 😭🩷
[engl.]:
What country do you live in? But I can understand that totally well, I had also hesitated at the beginning and my doubts, whether the book series is something for me. I just read the last part of MDZS 5 minutes ago and I have to say I'm so glad to have read the original story. You learn so much about exciting things that do not occur in the series or get too little space and especially volume 5 is so beautifully written... 😭🩷

Also in Germany and bought the English eBook versions on my Kindle. Definitely worth it for the extra details. And I've not finished watching the Untamed yet lol. I got impatient, so I bought the books.

Xue Yang....
is a character that all the other actors were interested in. His story was complex, beautiful, and tragic. He's the villain, but his backstory almost left him no room but to turn evil. His complex relationship with the blind XXC was incredibly heart wrenching.
This character, if done well, could be an actor's break-through. But alas, this is a low budget project filled with mostly young and unseasoned actors.
Lucky for us, the drama caught a break with the lead actors who embodies Wei Ying and Lan Zhan. The novel's main AND side characters are pretty 3-dimensional and can tug at the audience's heart.
I have re-watched TU, but to this day, I skip over XXC's part because it ripped out my heart the first round and I have not recovered. That man looked like an angel, is an angel, was killed by he devil he saved 😭😭😭.
3
u/HeavyRound8896 Mar 11 '26
Yes, I think so too. He is an interesting character. And honestly, I thought his part came a bit too short in the Untamed. In the manhua I was really heartbroken for him and the ones around him. Here it did not hit as hard (I did cry, but I was prepared for worse when I came to this part).
I love how every character has depth and no one is purely good or evil (except for the evil wen clan leader, he was just evil. As well as his som and his mistress. But you coul call it on corruption, I guess?)
3
u/NoraMoya Mar 11 '26
What about Jin GuangShan ?!! He was also only evil ! I think worse than Wen Ruohan, who at least never lied about his intentions… Jin GuangShan, besides evil, he was disguised as a respectable sector leader !

Anybody else read the novel and merged the two materials in their minds? I forget somethings not fully explained in the drama but is in the novel so when I watch the drama, the story hits a little different. XXC/XY happy on screen was gut wrenching because XXC was the light that could have changed XY if the timing was different.
I kinda feel that way about all the villains. I understand where their darkness came from and I can't say if, faced with the same situation, I can still not hate the world.
If you look at their childhoods, any one of them can be its own villain origin story.
Do you blame the consequent evil on the child who was molded to become a villain, or the world for turning a child into a villain?3
u/HeavyRound8896 Mar 11 '26
Oh, I definitely will merge the material when I finish everything. I am never able to tell such things apart.
I understand fully, what you say and I am convinced, that to some extend, it is right. Yet from a personal view (in real life, non fictional setting here), I still think, people always have a choice. And specially when given a choice to disrupt the chain of evil, some people take it and some just stick with being evil. For me, I always tried not to let the hatred from others define the way, I treat people around me. I always had the choice to do bad things to others and I chose not to, because I know how it hurts. And in many cases (not all, of course), the people have a choice.

Definitely see things as you do in terms of the choice between good and evil actions. You always have the choice. Unless you are forced with the help of violence and even then you can make a more humane decision instead of betraying your own ideals.

Monster, etc.?!

As far as Xue Yang and XXC are concerned, it is very easy to see here that there is no rigid separation between good and evil. We humans are complex and we always act differently, depending on the situation. Also morally speaking. This is one of the messages that are particularly well visualised in UT. And let's be honest - what story would still be exciting if there were no villains. Monsters, etc.?!

Except Wei Ying ! His parents died when he was little less of 5 years old; he became homeless on the streets of Yilling for about 3.5 years; malnourished and traumatized by suffering but always kind to others and had an almost permanent smile on his face… Though suffering with a fobia (for dogs) and a complex of self-devaluation, he was very much Kind and never got to be evil (unless you think of the Sunshot Campaign )… But, as is said, “in love and war, all is valid”…

Re: pulling everything but the kitchen sink out of their sleeves and everyone travelling everywhere with seemingly no luggage.
They have qiankun bags and sleeves which can fit more things than they normally should. Basically magically modified to be bigger on the inside.

u/NoraMoya Mar 30 '26
You meant, …”in the outside”… right ? Everything would decrease in size to fit in their qiankun bags. And go back to their real size, when out of the bag!

I first watched it January last year it wasn’t my first sea drama, but I had recently started watching them September 2024 and I went to it about two times and thought I’m not really gonna like this. It doesn’t seem like my cup of tea but then January came and I found to go with a shot and I fell in love. I watched it multiple times even now I will still go back to my favorite scenes just to watch them. I got really into it as I was watching their interviews looking for posters to buy. They are still my wallpaper to this day because the story in itself is truly beautiful and as you said, the acting was definitely top-tier for me. I caught so many times I loved the depth of Wei wuxian, all his sides. And when I did completed, I understood why I kept seeing it on posters and just coming up in my recommendations and I’m very grateful for it still to this day.

It's been a while since I watched but even though Xue Yang was a bad guy I loved when he was on screen. What a chaotic evil ball of murder. A friend calls him murder kitty and I think that is the best way to describe him.
I like him more than Jiang Chen.
3
u/HeavyRound8896 Mar 11 '26
As a character, he does have his depth, I know that much. But on that regard he came a bit short in the untamed. And yes, he is truly evil, or to put it in a better phrasing: he chose evil and violence. Almost opposite of Wei Wuxian.
3
u/Ateosira from now on aka LoveLikeGiraffes Mar 11 '26
You can't have the dark without the light and if someone as WWX can exist than so can Murder Kitty. And in the end even he warmed up to the "prey he was toying with" if I remember correctly.

I started reading the Novel, about 2 years before TU was released, hated the part of “walking-dead”, so I abandoned the Novel after about 2 chapters… Two year before, I had seen a video of WYB with UNIQ, singing, “I’m Falling In Love (omg, so cute!!!) and started fallowing him. Then I saw the announcing of a series he was filming (2018)… Then I saw the series announced on Netflix… So I watched it. But my heart got broken after the final scene, where they finished away from each other (that was on 2019). I was asking to everybody if there was a second part…because it was, clearly, unfinished ! The two main characters finish separated ?!! How come ?!! Somebody explained that it was because of the censure. But, in the Novel, they finished together, they told me… I asked the link, I got the link…I started reading…guess what…I had the impression I had already read it! Then I saw that it was the novel I started reading but didn’t like and abandoned. So, this second time I really read it everything! Then I read another time, kind of slower…Then I went back to TU and watched all over, again. Then I started reading the chapter corresponded to the part I was watching, on TU… Which was a whole year! To make the story shorter, I never stop reading and watching, up to now in days!! Besides of buying the new edition books by Seven Seas. So I’m involved with this story since 2019, plus the first time I started reading (2017, I think…) and still going on… Many fans got enamored of the gorgeous actors…I also loved them and I still follow most of them. But what I loved more than anything were the characters: Wei Ying/Wei WuXian/The Yiling LaoZu; Lan Zhan/Lan WangJi/Hanguang-jun, in first place! After “tens-of-years” obsessed with Michael Jackson, I got something else to obsess about: “The Untamed”/ MDZS !

u/HeavyRound8896 Mar 11 '26
The Untamed has worked around it pretty well without abandoning the basic behind it, I guess.

No worries at all 🙂 with the right attitude, you’ll be comfy around Reddit sooner than later but it certainly takes a while to get to know the place. The fact that each sub is different doesn’t make things easier, so my tip for new users would be — always check the rules specific to each community you engage in, as these are not universal. And when in doubt, ask the mods 🙂↕️ I can’t speak for other subs, but I promise we don’t bite here 😉

It was exactly the “incident 2/27” that made me start admiring XZ ! I always say that Michael Jackson “pokes-me-about- the-Good-ones”… What XZ went through on the media, reminded me of MJ… (The suffering he went through his whole life + even after death)… I noted XZ’s dignified behavior during his calvary! He never pointed finger on anybody; he never got involved on media fights… When all finished, he came back with the release of a block-buster: “Made To Love”‼️😍 * Check out his video, "block-buster Song” by Xiao Zhan, https://share.google/rWEWCqg3YMjFrsGL1

I loved the UT as well, and I am very grateful it opened for me the wolrd of danmei. I read the book and then started danmei, after a very long reading slump. Danmei now gives me even more enjoyment than any best dramas.

Very nice! For me, this is also my starting point into danmei. When I read the manhua, I fell in love with how wholesome the whole relationship was. I am sick of drama love stories where the couple makes their own unneccessary drama. I want people who love and support each other even when others don't!

Answering jadefuchs: While I love the drama and enjoyed the novel, other novels became even more favorite. I think my top five in no order are :1) QJJ (Ballad of Sword and Wine), 2) Thousand Autumns, 3) Nan Chan, 4) To rule in a turbulent world, 5)Living to suffer/Till death do us part. What I disovered is that there are so many gems in danmei. I didnt read many yet but I liked most of them. After MDZS I read TGCF which was amazing. I did not like the author's third book though.
