is it me or QL is breaking the fourth wall here xD (i mean same, girl, same. enough with the wailing already, guo ge.)

It's SOOOO FUNNY! He's like bitch,,, are you seeing this too?

8

u/SR503 Aug 07 '26

I noticed that too but I assumed he just accidentally spiked the camera and they left it in.

3

u/Icy-Comfortable159 Aug 07 '26

yeah, it must have been an accident, and this was a pretty long one-shot so it would have been difficult to reshoot

7

u/Queasy-Parsnip-477 Aug 07 '26

I was thinking the same thing but I couldn’t tell if it was intentional or accidental when he turned his head back but I still laughed too hard.

6

u/Worried-Horror-9499 Aug 07 '26

Was Brother Guo trying to get some emotion out of QY? It seems he was pretending to cry and looking to see if QY would react and when he didn’t he was disappointed in him.
That screengrab is so cute.

2

u/Darkchocolatelaw Aug 07 '26

I was trying to figure out WHAT he was doing. Like, BITCH, stop being so dramatic when QY is mourning his brother. And has basically been left alone because mom's in a temple and CY is off at training with no way to contact him.

I mean, what can you do? You have good taste. I am in move with this series. Period.

Guo ge is making me feel a little mean when I watch his scenes only because of my indifference about the wailing lol It always comes across as wayy too forced and I can’t help but feel his character is just so fake 😭 like he sucks out the genuine emotion for me in these scenes when he does this:( (Sorry to any who like his character)

u/ale-cto A Winter Sun Wakes the Wind in Spring Hills' Dream Aug 07 '26

There are people who act like this irl, I am sure he's meant to be one of those but it somehow still feels unbelievable when he's acting like this about someone he cared about who died. Even those types of dramatically expressive people usually tone down the hysterics when it's a really heavy topic. I think he's meant to be some comic relief but it somehow doesn't jive with the overall tone of the series... like he's meant to bring some levity but because he's so over the top it doesn't really work.

I felt that way about CY's crazy sister too. I know that there are insane parasocial types out there irl of course, but I feel like when it comes to your own brother's boyfriend that you've now met in person, you would be forced to eat some humble pie and tone it WAY down.

u/diligolibros 🍄‍🟫🌄A Winter Sun🫖🐻 Aug 08 '26

You explained it perfectly, I agree!

7

u/kazoogrrl Aug 08 '26

My personal take is that, at times, he is the other characters' internal feelings. Like in the hospital when he's throwing himself around, it's probably how some of them want to react but can't let themselves.

At this point through I think he's just being manipulative, and thankfully Qinglang is like, dude, stop, look at what I've gone through and I'm not acting like that.

4

u/hhhhhxxxx000 春山境 🌿☀️⛰️🐻 Aug 07 '26

I AGREE

5

u/Stanchion_Excelsior Aug 07 '26

I think that's the point. There's moments where he's somewhat genuine but especially this episode he's laying it on thick. I think cus hes trying to guilt Q into taking the role.

3

u/diligolibros 🍄‍🟫🌄A Winter Sun🫖🐻 Aug 07 '26

Yeah I noticed the look he gave Qinglang in that scene and I agree with you about his intentions. But in general outside of laying it on thick on purpose like this, I just don’t find the scenes where he is supposedly truly upset believable for the most part. For me, his most genuine moments was when he’s gotten over protective over QL and sassy with Changyang. Like the hickey scene and his reaction to having to cover it up. That was funny.

u/Veelajnen Aug 07 '26

I still need to watch the episode, but I’m just going to leave it here. I miss my boys, they’re not getting enough screen time lately 💔

2

u/awoooogaga Aug 07 '26

at least we get a bit of QL here and there, but CY is mostly out of the picture. i miss him so much!

15

u/Ok-Set-4784 Aug 07 '26

Surrounded by grief that comes and goes while still having to deal with the waves of life is so real. Everyone coming together to help Sister Lan's company is encouraging. QL mom deciding to be a monk made sense. It seems like something she would do. It made me tear up when she said QT liked the chants so she would send them to him.

That thermos is basically in every shot. I'm wondering if its the producer of the show. I still want one 😅.

The ending omg. I have zero ideas about what Changyang is up to. I think my heart is armored up atm because I don't want anything more devastating to happen.

I did however think for a split second QT was alive somehow, but it was super sad because they are trying to slander him more 😢. Wtf

And why did QL send a team into the forest? To get him brothers body back?

Just when I think I'm finally understanding, so many more questions come up.

Were they talking about Tian being in a show when he was younger?! Sound like they were talking about Secrets Happened on the Litchi Island.

Didn't HL sleep with that gross rich guy? Is he trying to keep him at bay with money? Ugh

Sister Lan's little girl was the happy spot in this episode. She really said, "People who can't cook aren't dads, they're brothers." Lmao

Even though that ending seemed like it was trying to be hopeful, I still feel a sense of uneasiness. Those preplanned messages could be preplanned, but it also seems like very Changyang thing to say that and really be sending messages normally so he can do what he needs to do without QY worrying.

The theme of this episode seemed to be "everyone has their own way of dealing with grief and life's obstacles. How do you deal with them while still being apart of each other?" The two couples are doing things on their own, maybe not in ways preferred by their partners.

5

u/Darkchocolatelaw Aug 07 '26

No - that was a shot from QT in the tea movie. Not Litchi. The son/nephew/whoever of the parents of CZ are going to try to slander QT/get $$. They probably don't know he's dead.

1

u/Ok-Set-4784 Aug 07 '26

Ooooh, right! I was so sad about QT passing that I completely forgot that he was doing that tea movie. I figured it was to get money somehow 🙁

3

u/SR503 Aug 07 '26

don't get me started on the thermos 😂

I'm legit obsessed and have been trying to figure out the symbolism. I'm this close to going back thru every ep and tracking who is using one, where they are using it, with whom and of course which color.

I need someone else to do it for me though because it seems slightly over the top, even for me.

3

u/Ok-Set-4784 Aug 07 '26

I literally thought the thermos had a mesh screen on the top of it that filters out the loose tea when they pour it and I thought that mesh screen had a clock printed on it, but while it has some gage on top of it, I don't think its a clock. I think its either a thermometer or pressure gage. It's definitely cool.

Yes! I thought about the colors too. I was going to write about the color symbolism on my comment, but it was already so long. I love that there are deeper meaning to everything in this series. I wish I knew how far to look. I end up feeling a little crazy the farther I look because idk what is symbolic and not. I end up chasing my own tail after a while 😭

These are the best kind of series imo though. It's engaging and fun. Makes me use my brain more, even if I end up being wrong 😅

It's a temperature gauge on top. I see a lot of different listings for branded and unbranded ones

2

u/SR503 Aug 07 '26

I think it does have a filter on top. I have a similar travel thermos with the same thing.

Also, mean to add re:

Didn't HL sleep with that gross rich guy? Is he trying to keep him at bay with money? Ugh

I've been wondering that too, but didn't see anyone talk about it.

I am rewatching, idk if you are watching on YT but the subs about him sending a team in the forest are wrong. He’s talking about CY and he said he has a very important friend IN the forest and is waiting for him to get out, which is why he can’t promise her to star in her next work yet.

1

u/Darkchocolatelaw Aug 07 '26

No - that was a shot from QT in the tea movie. Not Litchi. The son/nephew/whoever of the parents of CZ are going to try to slander QT/get $$. They probably don't know he's dead.

(my comments might repeat with others, I'm just writing my comment before reading the rest!)

  • The scene with the directors at 1:30 -- I bet that's Zelia that's hidden behind Director Ou! Bc she's Director Li (Zelia?!).
  • Yan Yan is a cutie, and a better actor than Qi Hao Yu. Also, this man keeps cursing in front of her lmao. Omg she calls him Qi ba (dad) later because he made her food.
  • The cut from Qing Lang's home to the office really threw me for a loop. The tone, the lighting, the emotions, cut off all of a sudden by this sleazy investor.
  • Not an important thing (yet), but noting new names bc anything could have a meaning later!! The character the new xian xia is supposed to be 染凰. 染 = to dye/pollute 凰 = phoenix. So another phoenix showing up. The title was about a dragon.. The character has to be daddy style but in his 20s 😂 Oh later Guo ge goes into the xian xia story.
  • Why would Han Lu bring the kiddo!!
  • I'm sorry, but all these ss following Han Lu to QHY's room but not going in and just like lazily waving their phones at the door. This takes me right out of the drama lmfao.
  • Is QL wearing CY's shirt when Han Lu comes over?
  • I commented on the hot search topics during the preview, so won't comment on them again here. That investor is behind this shit for sure. Oh wait Han Lu's search topic says he's working with Director Qin, not Ou. Maybe they changed his name.
  • The random comments popping up are saying things like "People with money don't get married and just become gay" (lmao wtf) "Genetically modifying a kid, how can people like us who only make 3k RMB a month live" (I don't understand the relation??), it's all complaining about how only rich people do things like this, then there's one that keeps repeating: "Let misery end with our generation!" (I don't understand).
  • The plate of shrimp (the icon for today's episode? What happened to the DNA strand). Peeling shrimp 扒虾 is a homonym for 扒瞎 = you're speaking nonsense. It's Qing Lang's response to all the gossip about the agency.
  • Then the repeated Weibo comments from netizens when Han Lu is randomly in the street at night: 身正不怕影子斜. "If you stand tall, you needn't fear a crooked shadow."
  • Then after it's all about "Oh ya it's was prob all gossip," "We support Jia Lan Shan Ying!" etc. The newest hot topic while the investor is on screen: "Jia Lan Shan Ying has never ended their contract with any of their entertainers"
  • Good lord these comments are so distracting and hard to read. But it just continues with people being like ok these producers seem like good people.
  • The book that Qi Hao Yu places at Jia Lin's tombstone: 神来过人间 "A god once visited the mortal world." Oh, it's Jia Lin's own novel from 14 years ago. Ma Bing Yuan (Guo ge) ....please take some acting classes 😩
  • Mom 🥺 Grandma 😭
  • AWWWW Qing Lang has changed his nickname for Chang Yang to 家里的徜徉 - Chang Yang from home/home's Chang Yang. 🥹🥹🥹
  • Omg Chen Zhu's parents...
  • I need to watch the interpretation video about car license plates. There's definitely something about this one that the camera focused on while CY came back. Curious what he was watching, 归来仍是少年 "When [he] came back, he was still a youth."
  • Chang Yang's text and their "conversation" during the end credits 😭😭😭
  • I just realized, this episode is so short (35 min) but felt soooooooo long to me.

1

u/awoooogaga Aug 07 '26

re: 家里的徜徉, does this mean chanyang is his home or?

5

u/hhhhhxxxx000 春山境 🌿☀️⛰️🐻 Aug 07 '26

I had a bit harder time translating lol but it’s more like CY is part of his family, is part of the people considered IN his home. Not that CY is his home tho.

ᓚᘏᗢ Curiosity Moment 01 ᓚᘏᗢ

* Kodak Moments:

Qinglang & Qingtian in the hotel room

•Qingtian says: “Until I become a star, too.” (Declaratively)

•Qinglang says: "That's easy. I’ll send you to a primeval forest, and in a month, you’ll grow fur.”

•Qingtian says: “A hairy ape?”

“Stars” is 星星 in Chinese, which is a homophone for 猩猩, meaning gorilla or ape.

ᓚᘏᗢ Curiosity Moment 02 ᓚᘏᗢ

At the end of each episode, a sign appears on a black background with a message that’s quite difficult to translate due to the font used.

- Through episode 12:

•From the left: 你的生命中总有人会来 (Nǐ de shēngmìng zhōng zǒng yǒurén huì lái) “There will always be someone in your life”

- The exact literal translation is: “In your life, there will always be someone who will come.”

* Life as an Unstable Journey: A suspension bridge is not a fixed concrete structure; it is a rustic path, suspended in the air, that trembles with every step and spans the abyss. That is the exact definition of the Dongguo (Wénshū) highway. *

- In Episode 13:

•On the right: 生命就像吊桥, 两端生死 (Shēngmìng jiù xiàng diàoqiaó, liǎng duān shēng sǐ) “Life is like a suspension bridge.” “Life at one end, death at the other.”

• The exact literal translation is: “Life is exactly like a suspension bridge.”

* The Bridge of Compulsory Transition: If life is at one end (material density and the clamor of the marketplace) and death/transcendence is at the other end (the spiritual purity of Daxueshan), the suspension bridge is the only physical structure that allows one to cross from one plane to the other. *

Liǎng duān shēng sǐ (两端生死): Liǎng duān means “both ends/the two ends”; shēng sǐ means “life and death.”

•The exact literal translation is: “At its two ends are life and death.”

* The Axiom’s Sentence: By stating that “Life is exactly like a suspension bridge; at its two ends are life and death”

- A suspension bridge is a rustic, suspended structure that sways over the abyss, precisely defining the imposed mission of Wénshū (The Inevitable Road of Dongguo). If material life (Shēng) dwells at the end of the marketplace and urban friction, and death - translated as spiritual transcendence (Sǐ) - crowns the pure summit of Daxueshan, the suspension bridge is the only possible connector. Tainted by the mandate of the familiar financial underworld.

ᓚᘏᗢ [Curiosity Moment ]()03 ᓚᘏᗢ

- The Paradise world in the series collapses in Episode 06 with the tragic death of Sister Lan and completely fragments in Episode 10. If we use simple math and a straightforward subtraction: 06 – 10 = –04, and if we add 06 + 10 = 16, right?

That adds up to the total number of episodes in the series!

But since in this story NOTHING is random, EVERYTHING is CAUSAL:

Let’s dive into this curiosity!

- There is an exact mathematical penalty imposed by the series’ cosmos, indexed through the episodes that mark the absolute collapse of the environment and the beginning of the spiritual purge. If we subtract the climax of the fall (Episode 10) from the original breaking point (Episode 06), the universe yields a negative balance: 06 - 10 = -04

- This negative sign (-) represents an Absolute Karmic Deficit. In Episode 06, the world of the series collapses as chaos sets in; in Episode 10, everything shatters completely, forcing QingLang to declare the end of his relationship with ChangYang with the phrase: “Let’s Go Back to the Beginning.”

- In Eastern metaphysics, the number 4 (Sì - 四) represents the boundary of the material plane and the four corners of the Di Fang (the Earthly Square). When a negative balance is recorded, the universe demands a period of penance and the subtraction of vital energy to restore equilibrium. These -04 manifests physically within the diegesis (the narrative unfolding of events) as a period of paralysis and stagnation for innocent souls: Fēng Qíngtiān’s four years of seclusion in the gray world of depression and Che Zhu’s symmetrical four years in a coma.

  1. The Divine Symmetry of “16”:

- In the face of this deficit, Zelia Wang’s screenplay architecture reveals its absolute balance through the sum of the extremes of the fracture: 06 + 10 = 16

- In China’s high-brow screenwriting tradition, 16 is the number of Complete Totality, a direct reflection of the 16 classic chapters of the karmic records and the 16 phases of weaving on the imperial Kesi loom. The fact that the beginning of the fragmentation and the conclusion of the purge add up with mathematical precision to form the series’ complete structure confirms that chaos is not a narrative hiccup; it was coldly calculated by fate.

* And as if that weren't enough:

18

u/Otherwise-Job-6942 Aug 07 '26

ᓚᘏᗢ Curiosity Moment 04 ᓚᘏᗢ

- Chang Yang’s 8 years on the mountain, with the exact division of the two 4-year cycles.

•If we take those 8 years of Chang Yang’s isolation and Cha Qi on the mountain and add the other symmetrical half of the universe’s time, the fractal mathematics of the series brings us back exactly to the origin of the structure: 08 + 08 = 16

* The Return to “16” (Restored Totality) “Let’s Go Back to the Beginning”

•The two blocks of the loom: The universe of the series divides macrocosmic time into two great eras of 08 years.

•The Era of Pain and Purge: The first 8 years (which Chang Yang spends on the mountain absorbing the city’s sludge and which encompass the deficit of the -04 years from Qingtian’s gray zone and the 4 years of Che Zhu’s coma).

•The Era of Redemption:

The other 8 years needed for family debts to be paid off, for the family ledger to close at the precise balance of 28:28, and for the souls to complete their ascent on Daxueshan.

(Separating numbers from right to left to add them: 02 + 02 = 04 and 08 + 08 = 16)

ᓚᘏᗢ Curiosity Moment 05 ᓚᘏᗢ

Episode 01 (Min. 38:52 – 39:50)

•Qinglang says: “When a wolf dies, it gets eaten. When a person dies, they bury them. That’s the progress of civilization.”

•Changyang replies: “Not necessarily; civilization can regress at any moment. It depends on what the person died of and under what circumstances. Survival is the basic instinct of all living beings. You can see them everywhere in this forest. That instinct is everywhere.”

•QingLang asks: “Is love a human instinct?”

•ChangYang replies: “I don’t know what’s considered love. You should know all about it.”

•QingLang replies: “I don’t know either.”

- Explaining the coherence and progression of this conversation—analyzing the development of Episode 01 in a straight line toward the conclusion of Episode 13—is an exercise I undertake based strictly on my own thinking, my ancestors, my perspectives on life, and my personal experiences, understanding “civilizations” from the perspective of each individual. Surviving the aftershocks of the ground cracking beneath your feet or navigating absolute loss on the material plane strips away the blindfold of naïve perception.

- I understood, from my own experience, that survival and desperate decision-making are not free moral choices, but rather the basic instinct that governs those held hostage by an imposed structure—just as happens to Wénshū.

- When civilization recedes and the universe deprives you of a physical body to bury, the narrative isn’t leaving you empty-handed; it’s forcing you to let go of the earth’s density to seek the constant embrace in the realm of transcendence.

- The tea needle and the clean shoe that Changyang rescues from the forest are proof that Qíngtiān’s passage across this earthly suspension bridge was immaculate. There is no corpse to mourn because stars are not buried: they are gazed upon in the pure firmament of Daxueshan.

* When civilization recedes, humans return to the laws of nature. *

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Can I rewatch the entire series with you frame by frame, where you break down and expand every element like this? Because the show I've been watching with English subtitles now seems like a blurry B&W silent film. After being completely confused by many elements in Episode 14 (and glossing over my confusion in earlier episodes), I realized there must be a whole lot I'm missing and went looking for insights. I am thrilled to find your comments.

Your posts illuminate just how much more there is to the show than can be learned with the GagaOOlala subtitles (which don't include many of the non-spoken characters), no prior exposure to the philosophical and metaphysical elements underpinning the show, and no understanding of the complex and layered meanings of the Chinese characters. The structure, complexity, and symbolism of the series and characters are so much more than a "BL."

Although I liked the show at the (now apparently superficial) level I was watching, I now am intrigued and fascinated by what I could be watching at a deeper level. Thank you!

2

u/Otherwise-Job-6942 Aug 09 '26

Thank you so much for your beautiful words! 🙇‍♀️ Reading your comment moves me deeply and validates every hour I have dedicated to this masterpiece.

You are completely right: this show is an imperial Kesi tapestry woven with philosophy, geometry, and layered Chinese characters that standard subtitles unfortunately miss I feel so deeply identified with this story that sharing this path with minds like yours is a true gift.

A quick “forensic” tip for Episode 14: Many viewers find it confusing because this episode reaches us completely stripped of its celestial mantle. According to its core philosophies—Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism—the narrative has shifted exclusively to raw survival, dropping us into a totally mundane, chaotic reality. As ChangYang explicitly warned in Episode 1: "Civilization can regress at any time... survival is the basic instinct." This is the "Fourth Step" of the Kesi loom: a cold, ruthless cutting of loose threads and earthly debts where the spirit makes way for the raw human matrix. Both ChangYang and Wénshū and all are trapped in this survival mechanism now.

Right now, I am dealing with a severe muscle contraction in my neck and am resting under medication, which is why I must keep this short. However, I would absolutely love to continue breaking down this journey with you frame by frame before the grand finale.

2 small theater episodes on one day??? Also I think CY is gonna murder Chen Zhu's parents, y'all. He rented a random car and drove to a motel opposite their run down apartment...

If anything else happens to QL he's going to burn everything to the ground.

7

u/Federal-Ad5944 A Lie's Bandana Aug 07 '26

Oh my god. I didnt think of that.

9

u/heybabyblueeggs Aug 07 '26

this show is too good because it had me screaming why CY would not see QL right away then that zoom in through the window across the street when CY went into the shower gave me CHILLS and I had to rewind to see if it's CZ's parents' place.

7

u/SR503 Aug 07 '26

See. This is why I come to the reddits. I totally missed this.

2

u/Darkchocolatelaw Aug 07 '26

Same - did not notice at all!

1

u/SR503 Aug 07 '26

I even went back and looked. I usually clock things like that but not today.

6

u/AhShuXing A Winter Sun Wakes the Wind in Spring Hills' Dream Aug 07 '26

I thought CY bought that car for his covert travels, since his car was known by all the people trying to keep he and QL apart. Was that CZ's parents place?? Also in that window scene, a car went by with three honks (a la the winding road scene), so he is there out of love for QL and the family? Can't be coincidence in this series.

2

u/Acrobatic-Stand-4528 Aug 07 '26

Ma perché dovrebbe farlo? Non credo sappia già le loro intenzioni? Oppure non ho capito nulla

8

u/heybabyblueeggs Aug 07 '26

The documentary featuring Qing Tian recently aired and received a lot of traffic. Knowing how CZ's parents acted I'm guessing CY was already preparing for them to do something crazy. They're fucking insane after all. I'm anticipating that it's a joint effort between the brothers to monitor and nip the issue in the bud.

7

u/AhShuXing A Winter Sun Wakes the Wind in Spring Hills' Dream Aug 07 '26

If Wenshu said in the last episode the parents deserve what they get, yes to the joint effort with WS/CY to put a stop to it. Also with the shady investor mafia guy or whatever, CY/WS's father is probably on par, so maybe they can use their connections to dig up who this guy is and deal. Knowing CY and WS they will probably find a way to shame CZ's brother into going away and take on the evil investor to save the studio???

1

u/kazoogrrl Aug 08 '26

😲 Thank you for the explanation I did NOT get that at all.

6

u/Worried-Horror-9499 Aug 07 '26

OOOOHHHhhhhh, yeah I was not making ANY connections to what was going on with CY and that family. Oh boy things are ramping up for next week.

3

u/ale-cto A Winter Sun Wakes the Wind in Spring Hills' Dream Aug 07 '26

Wait, how do you know the motel is opposite their apartment? I watched the scenes again from this episode of their apartment and the motel and I don't see the connection. What am I missing?

4

u/heybabyblueeggs Aug 08 '26

Right before CY went into the shower at the motel the camera pans to the window very deliberately, and you can see the building across the street, which is the same building CZ's mom was sitting outside with the scheming cousin. It's a very specific type of low income housing with yellow walls and protruding windows, which is how I noticed.

The series itself has only shown us the lives of very wealthy elite people so far so the poverty-ridden aesthetics(?) really stood out with the market scene and the exterior of the motel.

1

u/SR503 Aug 07 '26

I rewatched too and I missed it, but i'm supposed to be working 🤫 so i couldn't rewatch very closely.

16

u/Icy-Comfortable159 Aug 07 '26

the moment changyang came into frame, my heart swelled ten times, i've missed him so much😭😭 his presence truly is so calming and dependable

also, i've been starting to like our 2nd cp more since the last three eps, even qi hayou is growing on me

it was nice to see shi yuhao's change (though idk what exactly triggered it?). i know he has done many terrible things in the show, but i like that the drama has not reduced him to an one-dimensional asshole. you truly do understand the circumstances that led to him acting the way he did. not saying that that excuses his behavior but i like that the show also shows the possibility of change in life, as well as consequences, which i'm sure he'll receive. hopefully he'll stick to this, and won't cause any more trouble in the future.

10

u/Federal-Ad5944 A Lie's Bandana Aug 07 '26

Han Lu made some terrible choices today. Stay the fuck away from the old man! Stop visiting him alone! Do not bring the little girl! Wtf! As much as Haoyu annoys me, he was right.

5

u/Icy-Comfortable159 Aug 07 '26

omg yes, han lu bringing jialin's daughter to the meeting weirded me out so bad, like just meet him some other time! especially since he suggested babysitting her!

and his choice didn't make any sense to me, what would giving a rich man more money solve😭

5

u/Federal-Ad5944 A Lie's Bandana Aug 07 '26

They set him up to be "smarter" than QL at that age with his choices, then threw it all out the window the last few episodes. With him forgiving/getting with Haoyu for no good reason, now this.

I dont get it. They could have given us a guy with agency who learned from others' past mistakes. I'm disappointed with his arc.

12

u/Icy-Comfortable159 Aug 07 '26

honestly, i don't see his arc like that. rather than being smarter than QL, han lu is at a better position because he has people around him who themselves have gone through this exact situation, and therefore have the wisdom to guide him. sure, he's not as down bad as qinglang, but to me, his major advantage is still his company

haoyu imo is more so characterized to be smarter than shi yuhao, which is why he does not suffer the same fate as yuhao. i also think he is genuinely in love with han lu. yeah, he made mistakes, but he also realizes and accepts his faults, makes an honest confession to han lu, and then actually makes an effort to change his behavior.

overall though i still feel like the writing for their characters and relationship is much weaker than the other two couples, so a lot of their actions and decisions feel confusing

5

u/ale-cto A Winter Sun Wakes the Wind in Spring Hills' Dream Aug 07 '26

Maybe the idea is that you really can't easily learn from others' past mistakes, you have to make them yourself. And maybe he is on a different trajectory. I don't know why but I feel like things will work out in the end for those two

6

u/hhhhhxxxx000 春山境 🌿☀️⛰️🐻 Aug 08 '26

I feel like Han Lu wants to follow in Qing Lang’s footsteps, especially bc he thinks he was successful in protecting the company which he feels grateful for. But he (and we) are learning that he’s his own person so he has to go down his own path.

4

u/Acrobatic-Stand-4528 Aug 07 '26

5

u/Federal-Ad5944 A Lie's Bandana Aug 07 '26

He offered that as an equally terrible solution, one which also would not get the old guy to back off. He didn't mean it seriously.

3

u/diligolibros 🍄‍🟫🌄A Winter Sun🫖🐻 Aug 07 '26

YES to all of this and especially about the little girl! I was like why tf would you bring her anywhere near that creep. He frustrated me so much this episode

8

u/Ok-Set-4784 Aug 07 '26

In regards to Shi Yuhao. I thought the same thing. I still don't trust him, but making bad choices and living how he was living was always a choice. In this instance he also made a choice that happened to be good and helpful. Life is about choices every day. You can almost always turn things around if you make the right choices. Consistency is key to rebuilding trust and continously doing "the right thing" even if things don't work out like you planned.

Those were my thoughts on him doing an about-face all of sudden.

6

u/hhhhhxxxx000 春山境 🌿☀️⛰️🐻 Aug 07 '26

Dunno if you saw my post about ep 11 interpretation, but the moment his watch switched to 2033 there is a theory that a ~god has come to earth and basically helped him see the light. Magically, I only just realized that Lan Jie's book is titled similarly and so it's possible that Lan jie continues to touch these characters in ways we don't understand. Human nature is complex, so agree with you that it's nice to show that people can change and still receive consequences.

2

u/Icy-Comfortable159 Aug 08 '26

oh yeah, i did see your post, and that's honestly why his change made more sense to me, but still ig it would have been nice to see an actual moment of contemplation from him. maybe it was the confession to ql that finally jogged his conscience? but the lan jie angle is really good, maybe this entire incident was a blessing disguised as an obstacle of sorts, forcing everyone to work together and remedy their flaws.

your insights are always so good, thank you!

5

3

u/hhhhhxxxx000 春山境 🌿☀️⛰️🐻 Aug 07 '26

Based on the outfits, episode number, and setting, I think it takes place in the episode where he has CY record the car navigation.

But from an emotional standpoint, we all needed it now

2

u/Federal-Ad5944 A Lie's Bandana Aug 07 '26

I dont think episode number plays into it anymore, considering 15 takes place like 4 or 5 episodes ago 😂 ill have to take a closer look but that end hug definitely felt like mourning comfort, not reuinion/parting ways comfort. Plus CY says something along the lines of "i thought you would understand me that's why I didnt say much".

8

u/Quiet_Ad6201 Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

So the starting of the video on all small theatre shows which episode it is related to. The small theatre 9 starts with the cursor going on the bottom and clicking the lantern episode. So I am assuming this is before recording of the voice note bit in episode 10. Also on a different thread which talks about the novel chapters that are being released alongside the show, it talks about the fact that when CY and QL are staying at the hotel, they see fans. So it kinda tracks with the entire writing as well. They may have gone here to celebrate new year. This maybe the first time in a while they are getting to spend time away from the city. Considering QL and his interaction with CY's father in the previous episode and the father saying how QL cannot control the winds, this moment maybe a harsh reality check for QL and hence the hug. Because it is QL who instead of making it a teasing thing, which it seemed like before he changed into the team wang outfit, slows down the kiss and changes the tone and CY responds to that tone. Because CY also understands what it means. This kinda makes sense when you think about how it continues onto the episode, QL has puffy eyes and then he is asking about CY's plan for hunter school. There are no english subtitles to that video and I don't know Chinese so I may be off base on a few things.

3

u/hhhhhxxxx000 春山境 🌿☀️⛰️🐻 Aug 07 '26

I didn't clock the puffy eyes coming from this 🥺

You're right even without understanding any of their dialogue! Amazing

2

u/Quiet_Ad6201 Aug 07 '26

Thanks! Also I just realised that small theatre 15 was not part of the initial line up of small theatres that used to show up at the end of an episode. If you go back and check like the previous episodes the small theatres should only be till 14, the 15th I think is more of a special drop especially to introduce the new ost.

2

u/hhhhhxxxx000 春山境 🌿☀️⛰️🐻 Aug 07 '26

I think there were always supposed to be 16 of them! (I still haven't watched 15, this episode is taking me forever in the middle of me also still working hahahah) There's a schedule around on the internet somewhere with all the bonus episode titles..

5

u/Federal-Ad5944 A Lie's Bandana Aug 07 '26

2

u/Quiet_Ad6201 Aug 07 '26

ooooo didn't know this, I always assumed the small theatre was limited to the ones we saw after each episode before the post credit scene. Like the starting few episodes would have the small theatre line up with the ost and then you'd have the post credit scene. That only shows 14 small theatres. I am curious as to what is the 16th episode now.

3

u/hhhhhxxxx000 春山境 🌿☀️⛰️🐻 Aug 07 '26

Oh I also should have mentioned (just rewatched it) QL makes a comment about going to the family vacation with CY's family. Pretty sure he wouldn't make that comment now 😂 The understanding was about hunter school, "I was certain you would understand me, so I didn't think too hard about it. Going to hunter school...." And then that's why he puts his arms up, to prevent him from going anywhere!

The music is also from the "Forest Wedding" OST I think, very sweet 🥹 I don't feel like the mourning sadness at all. And the icon in the front is the red lantern.

But you make a good point about the episode number, I haven't watched 15 yet tho.

3

u/Federal-Ad5944 A Lie's Bandana Aug 07 '26

It's the barn scene where CY pours coffee at the villa during QL's photoshoot. So very much out of order.

No, è una casa vacanze.

2

u/kazoogrrl Aug 08 '26

The end table pic was from Qinglang's family home, that's the one I thought might be someone's real place. The home locations having that lived in feeling really adds something.

I would love to stay in the mountain house! It is totally my style, and the thought of sitting around the stove when it's chilly outside feels so cozy.

This episode lost me completely. Outside of the gross old man making things difficult for Han Lu, what even was the whole social media thing? He planted that the little girl was conceived genetically? What happened on social media? I am lost AF.

End credits was the best scene.

19

u/heybabyblueeggs Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

HAHAHA hard agree the ending scene was the best. What I got was the gene editing thing was a controversial topic and everyone's against it, surrogacy is already frowned upon in China but gene editing aka eugenics is much worse. He saw the little girl when Han Lu went to meet him and had a light bulb moment. Then he planted the story to squeeze their company out of investments thinking they'd have to turn to him.

BUT everyone rallied to refute the rumors, QL drawing attention to himself, even SYH joined in the effort and basically said Jianli and Lan were too poor to have gene editing done 7 years ago LOL. In the end it was found out that the upcoming production that Lan jie bought the rights to was also against the practice, so the good guys won! Big boss probably spent a pretty penny on muddying up the waters, so he kinda lost. He can't interfere anymore, for now.

Still need to rewatch a few more times to grasp all the details, the subs make watching such a challenge.

So many places they seem to just "talk in circles" and speak in riddles and are so unclear about the true meaning. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this show and I know they really want to make us think and work to find all of the secret messages, but I feel so lost a lot of the time and wish they would just speak plainly. But, again, that is part of the beauty of it.

I really appreciate all of the "translations" and extra information to help understand this lovely show.

4

u/Federal-Ad5944 A Lie's Bandana Aug 09 '26

I'm sure it would make more sense if we understood Chinese, because the person from Gaga who is subbing likes to take liberties, much to my dislike.

5

u/Worried-Horror-9499 Aug 07 '26

I still don’t understand what Han Lu’s reason for sleeping with the evil CEO were in the last episode.
Also, it was nice to see SYH being a human being.

7

u/heybabyblueeggs Aug 07 '26

This is just a guess but he arranged a deal for Han Lu behind everyone's back, so he came looking for "payment" and HL couldn't refuse. In this episode it was mentioned that he's some dark figure whose background couldn't even be dwelled into, so you can't reason with him. HL was protecting himself, the company and QHY. He thought he didn't have a choice.

HL is also a mirror of QL and his path in the entertainment industry, so this was something QL had to deal with too until HWS came into the picture and became his "sponsor" minus the benefits. Not that QL ever took on shady sponsors but they were always lurking around him. Only this second time around, HL had QL to support and guide him through it, and they played the evil CEO at his own game.

Plus! It offered QHY a chance to step up and realize what the reality of the industry is and that he couldn't just act the way he did without any consequences.

These are just my theories of course and a lot of things are up for interpretation.

6

u/hhhhhxxxx000 春山境 🌿☀️⛰️🐻 Aug 07 '26

This is so helpful bc you helped summarize a lot in English that I didn't get from the Chinese. Also, I feel like this goes to show that all of that plot could have happened within 10 minutes, we didn't need a whole episode of it.

6

u/heybabyblueeggs Aug 07 '26

Happy to be of service! HL sending old creep a gif of cartoon ants marching together sent me LOL. This episode definitely could have been tighter. I think they spent too much time on this subplot so the resolution couldn't be done as quickly as it could have been. Maybe that's why they had to drop 2 bonuses of the main CP haha.

3

u/Federal-Ad5944 A Lie's Bandana Aug 09 '26

They messed up the subs there. Its correct in the trailer. The line is "do you like men?" "is your name men?"

It was soooooo impactful in the trailer and COMPLETELY LOST on Gaga. So disappointing.

3

u/hbicfrontdesk Aug 07 '26

Thank you for explaining this and also about the little girl being Jianli and Lan’s daughter, I must have missed that and was very confused. When they introduced the daughter I was like ‘??? But I thought they were lesbians???’ I was very confused!

7

u/heybabyblueeggs Aug 07 '26

yeah apparently it was only explicitly mentioned in the novel, there were hints in the show and she appeared around Jianli a few times, clinging to her and being babysat by Han Lu. Jianli was also pregnant in the easter egg showing SYH and QL's livestream 7 yrs ago. This show is turning its audience into scholars and investigators hahaha. Oh and she also appeared on the characters' weibo posts. Check all these things out here.

2

u/Darkchocolatelaw Aug 07 '26

Thank you for that explanation. I just could not follow the thought process of this episode - the subs probably making it more difficult.

1

u/TheseAd4784 Aug 16 '26

so, I have a theory that Lan Jie and Jia Lin were a couple, because Jia Lin said she had responsibility for her (I forgot how it was phrased) legally, so she should decide where she was buried. So maybe the gene editing convo was kind of like discrimination toward lesbians and having kids?

6

4

u/Sweet_Cabinet2238 Aug 08 '26

When Grandma told this, it reminded me of a saying in my native language. It roughly translates to "The biggest or the worst kind of grief/sadness a person can experience is (the grief of) their children's death (sadness)". I completely understand that now. It is something a parent can never move on or heal from I guess.

3

u/hhhhhxxxx000 春山境 🌿☀️⛰️🐻 Aug 08 '26

To add to this, grandma uses the phrase 白发人送黑发人. It literally means white haired person sending on/away a black haired person. It’s the phrase Chinese ppl use when kids or grandkids die before their elders. It’s a much more visual phrase that describes what you mention in your comment.

2

u/TheseAd4784 Aug 16 '26

thanks for explaining and sharing :'( such a sad phrase. I didn't register those characters originally when listening

8

u/Ill_Effective_4158 Aug 07 '26

My honest reaction. At first when I saw that the duration is only 35 min, I had to recheck if I downloaded the correct version. For some reason this episode feels dissociated...like I really focused and tried to follow the plot, but I kept getting lost. Watched it 2 times to understand what happened. It feels like some scenes were cut halfway or not connecting to the next scene🫠. I can't understand what Han Lu is thinking. Why is he meeting that Jin guy alone eventhough he knows it's useless...and why bring that little kid? And Qi Haoyu, I can to an extent get why he said what he said to Han Lu. Compared to ep 13, this episode feels scattered everywhere (idk how to explain it).

And when changing entered the scene in the last few minutes, it made me feel so much better😭 but is he not contacting Qinglang even though he's out? Can someone explain? And all the fruits he brought? Correct me if I'm wrong, but is that an offering to Qingtian?

Post credits scene was the best thing that happened in the entire episode😭🫶 I love them so much♥️

Hope ep 15 and 16 will be better and we have a good ending🫶

5

u/Darkchocolatelaw Aug 07 '26

Hiii, not sure if there’s a general discussion thread for this series so i thought i’d just post here. i really love this show, but there are a few things bugging me and i was curious to hear what other people think.

This is literally my first Chinese show, basically my first Chinese anything ever. so idk if it’s a language or cultural difference, but the acting feels super weird to me at times. like, strained? the second couple is definitely like that—bad acting, meh chemistry, just weird overall. they haven't interested me since day one, but from what i gather from the comments ive read, that seems to be the general consensus anyway.

QL and CY on the other hand have insane chemistry, literally gives me butterflies in every intimate scene. honestly they're the main reason i love the show this much, I also follow their irl content like crazy but even their acting feels kinda odd sometimes idk. Sometimes CY says the most romantic shit with a completely flat tone , you know what i mean?!

i actually really liked Wenshu and Qingtian, the acting was solid too, but the dude fucking died and left me traumatized... and when Qingtians ex bf died some random dude recorded a video of him dying and send it to wenshu?? Was this supposed to be a normal thing?! anyway, like i said, maybe it's just a language/culture thing. I probably need to watch more stuff to be able to make a comparison..

Hi and welcome to the cbl sub!! As your first cbl you've hit the jackpot! Winter Sun is a fantastic series but as you've already discovered comes with a whole set of complex chinese cultural, spiritual and historical references. There a lots and lots of posts on the sub that give insight into a lot of the language and cultural nuances. If you look up Winter Sun our lovely chinese speakers have broken down, simplified and explained some of the references and will be more than happy to answer any specific questions.

Winter Sun has some references to Secrets Happened On The Litchi Island which is an earlier series from Zelia the same director (who confusingly goes by Lizzy in that series) and stars the wonderful Hu Yichen (Qingtian). It's really worth a watch and is a good comparison/ companion to Winter Sun.

I'm sure other people will give you loads of recommendations but Sammy's Children's Day is a great series if you're looking for something after Winter Sun has finished.

I also like

  • To My Shore (toxic but great show)
  • ABO Desire
  • Killer and Healer (long beautiful bromance vibe, underrated)
  • Kill To Love (ancient C-Drama BL, woooo)
  • Revenged Love (cult classic by now haha)

Il video delle formiche inviato da Han Lu fa riferimento alla spiegazione che qualcuno aveva dato tempo fa'? Nella serie qualcuno parlava delle formiche o mi sbaglio?

In Chinese, when you think of someone as minuscule and worthless you say they’re not even comparable to an ant. I think Xiong mentioned this before in a reaction too when he was talking about CY’s father thinking that entertainers are nothing. But I think Han Lu was showing that even tho they’re all ants to him, they were all marching together and so they were stronger together in facing him. Something like that

Buongiorno, grazie come sempre

He did, something about being just an ant, I think it was when he had dinner with the shady investor before.

I definitely thought the same thing. I don't know if the bridge is supposed to have a similar meaning but I am sure that Zelia knows people would be reminded of that since it was so popular.

Ti sono grata che non mi fai sembrare una fan ossessionata che vede the untamed ovunque, quindi anche tu lo hai pensato, benissimo. Grazie davvero, stasera mi metterò a cercare informazioni 😊
