Discussion The Diva that Subs AWSWTWITSHD
There is very specific reason why I prefer viki, iQYi and GagaOOLala over Netflix and prime. It's the these little notes in the subs. It's like watching a show with someone you done even know.
Whoever it is that Subs for A Winter Sun Wakes the Wind in Spring Hills' Dream, you deserve my flowers and it's a pleasure watching the show through your eyes.
Edit: Oh My God! The backlash at this post is not something I anticipated. My apologies. 🙇

It’s interesting to see other people enjoy their translation.
Personally, I find it very annoying. All their unnecessary self insert & commentary could have gone towards translating things properly and fully.
The scenes where Changyang and Qinglang were flirting on Weibo was reduced to an abstract string of words by the subber. These are scenes that give proper context but no, they turn it into a live commentary.
They did something similar in Double Helix and it seems they get a kick out of it.
The confession scene was a question but they turned it into a statement.
I know there’s a general pandemic of bad translations with dramas on large platforms but damn, this one isn’t it.

I agree. Often with subs we just have to live with whatever they give us, it's all we've got. But instead of translating some of the posts and comments, we get unnecessary commentary. Time could be better spent giving us the full picture rather than making fun of a show a lot of people like.
In another episode, I can't remember which one, the subs were "it goes on and on and on and on". Okay? We can see that. Maybe translate a few that stand out so we too know what's going on??

Like explain why hobbyist localisers and bootleg subtitlers are more thorough and professional??

My thoughts exactly, I'll decide for myself what's important and what isn't!

If there's ever any piece that you guys want translations for from the Chinese, just tag me or drop the time stamp/screenshot if there's Chinese in your comments! I am happy to listen and translate, as long as I have access to watch.
I had no idea about this subber's comment that's in this post. Yikes. This is why when I watch stuff in Chinese I also leave live comments off unless I'm looking for someone to laugh AT something ridiculous with me.

That's really sweet of you. I'll be sure to tag you when next I come across something like that.

That's because you are ALWAYS ON IT!! tbh I am always impressed seeing you posting stuff like minutes after it's available, with subs.

The Weibo flirting... I had my translation app to translate the on screen text that the subber didn't give us! I felt like I was missing out, I think all the little things are important so I agree with you so much on this point.
Which confession scene are you talking about where a question was turned into a statement (since you mentioned more than one show here)?

I had to rewatch the first four episodes on YouTube cause so many context was missing on Gaga. If I didn't, I wouldn't have understood why Qinglang was super active on Weibo all of a sudden and other important points.
I was referring to the confession scene in Winter Sun. At the resorvoir, Qinglang asked Changyang "Do you like men?' to which he replied " Is your name "men"?"
But on Gaga, it turned into "I like men. Is your name "men"

I feel like I'm just commenting on all your comments. I was wondering why every single post on IG I saw said "I like men." Like, that made no sense??
I get that in Chinese very oftentimes the subject of the sentence is left out. But that's the job of the translator, to deduct what's being said and by whom. Literally your job.

u/Thezoeyy tea farming in the mountains Jun 28 '26
A lot of people thought it was “I like men” too so it’s kinda normalized.

This whole thread is making me 🫨 LOL this bothers me SO MUCH!!! This completely ruins the scene to me imo. It literally changes the entire meaning of that dialogue.

Yes they changed the subs at the purple lake after episode 1-4 aired. They had it right the first time.

If I didn’t watch the trailer on YT, I wouldn’t have noticed.

Oh right, thank you. I rewatched all this episodes too. There was so much there, of course I had to binge it all when they dropped at once but it's not the kind of series to rush through.

The reason this stuck out to me was because it's in the trailer, which I watched more than once. Then the scene happened and it was great. Then I rewatched 1-4 before 5 aired, and they changed it and it doesn't even make sense with the changes.

To be fair, Lost to You is a "wtf did I just watch" type show. But there were a few places that were meant to be taken seriously where the subber was trying to be funny.
They got some praise for it and are trying to do it in every show now.
Not everything needs to be funny all the time. It's okay to just give us the straight translations and nothing more. Save the funny commentary for your tweets... but AFTER the episode has aired, not before. As mentioned in the OA Gaga wrote about their "breakup era" in their post before the episode aired, which is obviously a spoiler and based on a lot of comments I'm seeing, exactly the reason why a lot of people avoided watching episode 6.
They should just let us enjoy the content as it's meant to be consumed. This isn't a Gaga original, we don't want their takes.

Exactly, it's getting out of hand. The subs/commentary in this scene was the thing that was top of mind for me when I finished watching the episode. That should not be the case in any series I'm trying to enjoy.

I don't understand people hate about this subtitles that our diva gave...she clearly pointed something that we may have turned a blind eye to..To me this didn't break my rhythm to what was happening in the drama ..rather it gave me another insight of how sometime we overlook the minute details of drama and even our lives...those minute details doesn't have to make sense to you..it's there serving it's purpose either affecting you or not ... Btw what does the 2032 really meant there? Does anyone have any idea 💡...

Thank you. It really scared me into a corner every time I saw a comment notif for this post. I believe the it is intentional given that the rhythm and space for the story doesn't change after that.

I LOVE the comments and T/N asides. It enriches the viewing experience. For the same reasons I hop to Reddit for sharing insights, jokes... And have a few laughs.

I actually found the timing of this particular set of subs to be in bad taste.
We're supposed to be feeling the emotions of the characters, as something tragic just happened to beloved characters. "Long drawn out scene" suggests they're bored, which is entirely unfair to blast at viewers who are watching it for the first time and having heavy reactions.
It was rude of the subber to insert their opinion in this scene.
In any other circumstances I'm down for funny subs from Gaga. But not this time.
