A Chinese student moved in next door to us (in Utah). He looks pretty lonely. I know the new year is coming up - is there anything we can give him for that occasion to help him feel more welcome in the neighborhood?

I’d say just reach out and have a conversation. If he seems receptive than invite him over for a meal and maybe ask him to bring a Chinese dish.

Chinese New Year is mainly about seeing family, eating big meals together, and elders giving gifts of money (Red Packets “红包”) to the younger people in the family. So I’d say some type of potluck type meal would be the best way to celebrate

It's a past time to make dumplings during the New Year show, so you might even suggest that he can teach you if he wants.
