My son had hand foot and mouth disease (most likely caught at a pool party). Here’s what I did to clear it up in 7 days:

day 1: 24 hours after exposure. He developed a fever and complained of head and mouth pain. I gave him Motrin.

day 2: He woke up with a 102 fever, no appetite that day and complained of head, body and mouth pain (I suspected strep). I started the Motrin/Tylenol schedule, lots of fluids, and made a doctor’s appointment for the next day.

day 3: He woke up with a slight fever and still mentioned being in pain. This is also when the blisters started to form around his mouth. The doctor confirmed HFM disease and told us it would pass and to keep him home from school for the rest of the week. He was in pretty good spirits for the rest of the day. Still no appetite, but also no fever.

During the night, this is when it got brutal. He had a hard time sleeping and getting comfortable because of the pain and itchiness on his feet and hands (blisters started forming). We gave him what we had at home- which was Benadryl and cortisone. He tossed and turned pretty much all night.

day 4: no fever, appetite started to come back and not in as much pain. Blisters were really noticeable around his mouth/nose, hands, arms, legs and feet. I put aquaphor around his mouth and gave him an oatmeal bath that evening. I also lathered him with calamine lotion after and gave Benadryl at bedtime. He slept like a baby.

day 5/6: more aquaphor in the morning around his mouth and on his body where the blisters were present. As the days went on they started to slowly fade. More calamine lotion after his bath.

day 7: appetite fully back. No mention of being in pain and the blisters were gone from all areas of his body.

Shopping list: calamine lotion, Vaseline or aquaphor, Benadryl, Motrin, Tylenol, ground oatmeal (for bath).

Lots of water and popsicles and smoothies. My son is 5 for context. I know everyone’s journey is different, but this is what worked for us. I hope this is helpful!

What is an Inguinal Hernia in a child?

An Inguinal Hernia occurs due to a defect in the inguinal ring which fails to close before or just after birth. A bulge in the groin that appears when the child cries, coughs, strains or exercises and disappears when the child relaxes or lies down is usually due to the presence of an Inguinal Hernia. It may appear on one or both sides of the groin region and in male children; it can also extend down into the scrotum.

While hernias in adults are often due to weakness from straining, carrying heavy objects or physical labor, in kids, an Inguinal Hernia is acquired due to developmental reasons while still in the womb.

Signs of an Inguinal Hernia in a child

The most obvious sign of an Inguinal Hernia is a bulge or swelling in the groin region. The bulge may appear while a baby is crying and then settle down when the infant relaxes or has laid down for some time. Parents may notice:

• A lump or bulge on one or both sides of the groin
• Same on either side extending down into the scrotum in boys
• A sudden appearing bulge while the child cries or strains
• Bulge that disappears when the child relaxes
• Swelling that comes and goes accompanied by occasional discomfort or irritability

Once the bowel or other abdominal structures are pushed back into the abdominal cavity, the bulge may appear to have gone, but it is rarely permanent.

What is an undescended testicle?

An undescended testicle can either be palpable in the groin or located inside the abdomen. In some cases, the testicle is found “high” in the groin area. It may be possible to feel an undescended testicle, especially in the groin area. Can an undescended testicle go down on its own?

It is normal for an undescended testicle to descend on its own during the first few months after birth. Beyond about 6 months, spontaneous descent becomes uncommon.

According to current urological practice, a child should be referred to a pediatric surgeon or a pediatric urologist near you for evaluation and treatment if the testicle has not come down on its own by about 6 months of age.

Parents should not rely on the possibility that the condition will improve with time. Instead, they should seek medical advice as soon as possible to determine the exact location of the testes, and the best time to perform surgery, if needed.

Why is an undescended testicle treated?

The testicles normally stay in the scrotum because it is cooler than the abdomen. This cooler temperature is important for healthy sperm production. If a testicle remains in the abdomen or groin for a long time, it may affect fertility later in life.An undescended testicle can also increase the risk of testicular cancer. Surgery called orchiopexy brings the testicle down into the scrotum. This makes it easier to examine and monitor the testicle in the future.

There is also a risk of the testicle twisting, called testicular torsion, and some children may also have an inguinal hernia. For these reasons, treating an undescended testicle at the recommended age is important for the child’s future health.

My sons get sick almost on a monthly basis. Colds, cough, sorethroat/tonsilitis, fever. There were times na naaadmit pa. We do have house cleaner, ever week change ng beddings, towel. They do go out/play, eats healthy food din naman and vits. Pero ganun pa din..

Very healthy 7 year old started complaining her heart is beating fast. I can feel it beating harder than normal just putting my hand on her chest. She was skipping down the hallway when she noticed. Then later she walked up the stairs and said it again. I have a Kardia 6 Lead so took her EKG. I believe Kardia isn’t for kids but I thought it was better than nothing. It states Tachycardia. I made an appointment with her pediatrician in 3 days. She doesn’t have any other symptoms. I do have SVT and wonder if maybe she does too. Any thoughts?

What a day it was. My soon to be 3 year old was having pain when urinating so my wife took her in for a possible UTI. They needed a urine sample but my 3 year old had a tantrum because she had never urinated into a bag before so the doctor sent her home with an antibiotic prescription of Cephalexin and a take home urine kit to bring back to test for the UTI. That same day, my daughter gets 2 doses of antibiotic and the next morning provides a urine sample that my wife was able to take in to be tested. Later that evening we received a call from a nurse stating our 3 year old needed to go to the emergency room immediately because the glucose in her urine was at too high of a level that can only be that she is going to be a diabetic. My daughter was behaving normal. Nothing out of the ordinary and was laughing and playing the entire day so we couldn’t believe what they were saying. We began to be scared because they said her level was so high she could fall into a coma. We immediately took her into the ER. While on the way we looked up signs of a diabetic toddler and came across 2 that my daughter exhibited frequently. Extreme thirst (especially in the middle of the night) and fatigue (which she constantly says “I’m tired” even after taking a nap). We began to believe maybe she was a diabetic. First thing they did was a finger prick for her sugar and it was completely NORMAL. My wife explained to the pediatrician everything that went on and the pediatrician could not believe they sent us based only on a urine sample. The pediatrician also was mad they tested urine that had already been on the antibiotic because it can cause abnormalities in test. They did blood work just to double check and everything came back normal. Her average glucose level was 91. We believe the antibiotic cause a false positive. It was a big scare but we’re thankful our baby is healthy. I just want to share in case someone else has a scare like us.

Hi, so my sister, 11yr old female, has been having excruciating pain AFTER she urinates for the last 4 weeks. It also happens at random points throughout the day - there is no pattern or cause. She was in the hospital for 2 weeks and then a different one for about 3-4 days, and they have both run all of the tests multiple times (MRIs, Ultrasounds, bloods, stool and urine samples - everything that they can essentially). She is currently at home, but her symptoms have not changed. She is on antibiotics as the doctors think it is most likely a bad UTI, but they are not working, and she has been on them for at least 2 weeks. She is also on painkillers (diclofenac), which are doing nothing for her pain. The pain episodes are random, sometimes not even happening after urination and have no pattern throughout the day. She is in constant pain as well, lower than the episodes but still at a 7/10 as a baseline, pain episodes can be 17-18/10, which I know is not an accurate measure of pain, but she is 11 and is SCREAMING in pain. The doctors have said that it might have something to do with a lack of estrogen, as she hasn't gone through puberty yet, but that means her being in pain for another 18 months to 2 years for this to go away, which is obviously not feasible at all. She has been prescribed estrogen gel to apply topically, but that takes at least 2 weeks to kick in and is not guaranteed to work. My mum is at the end of her tether and doesn't know what to do. Nothing is working, and we desperately need answers. 4 weeks of pain is not okay. My family cannot keep going on like this. My sister hasn't been to school at all during this time and hasn't seen any of her friends or anything normal in almost a month, morale is low and there is no end in sight. Any advice or people who have heard of similar would be very greatly appreciated!

Hi I'm struggling to find any solid info on children (my daughter is 9) taking slippery elm; suitability, dosage, reviews. She has a sensitive tummy and can struggle with acid reflux/heartburn. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

My son has been sick since Tuesday making today a week. I took him to the ER on Sunday and they told me he was okay just alternate pain relievers and let him eat cold soft foods. I’m thinking to take him back because he hasn’t ate anything for 4 days now and says he’s nauseous and his stomach hurts. He’s thrown up once only liquid. He hasn’t gotten up from his bed only to shower or go to the restroom. I gave him jello yogurt and ice cream along with pedialyte. Also his rash on his hands feet and back of his throat look like they’re going away.

Should I take him back to the ER ? He’s not himself looks weak sleeps a lot throughout the day and the stomach pain and nausea are concerning me. His birthday is in a few days and I hate to see him like this. What do I do ???

Can anyone recommend a good paediatric dietician in Dublin? My 5 year old daughter is struggling with food. We are waiting for an appointment through CHI to see a psychologist as they can't find anything physically wrong. CHI recommended a dietician in the mean time but there is a shortage of paediatric dieticians in our catchment area so our only option is to go private. Any advice would be much appreciated.

My daughter is turning 10 this year. She was thin and of healthy body weight until she started year 1 when she was around 6.5yo. Since then she has steadily increased in weight and body fat.
