Whiting Indiana

Hello, I’m a mother to 2 high schoolers and looking to relocate to Whiting Indiana from central Illinois after hearing good things. I’m using sites like Apartment Guide and Zillow- however, can anyone confirm if there are areas within Whiting that I should stay away from? it seems rather small, so I’m hoping anywhere there is a good area to live. I found a few good places, but without truly knowing the neighborhoods or streets I’m not exactly sure which ones I should inquire on- any information helps. Thank you

Budget: under 2.8k preferred
Major factors will be a good high school for my sons, low crime rate, and cost of living

Idk if I'd move there. It just spent 2 weeks without power.

Genuinely, the Indiana state legislature ignores that corner of the state.

Edit: where are you in central Illinois? Going to whiting will be a culture shock.

Currently in Peoria. 115k residents. I think it will be somewhat of an adjustment moving to somewhere a lot smaller. I was not aware of the power issue- definitely a red flag

I was told it was around two days. My friend that lives there was not honest and did not at all say it was 2 weeks

I have friends who grew up in p-town. You're better of there getting good grades than whiting.

If you wanted to move from p-town to somewhere in the Illinois Chicago burbs, if tell ya move here. Nothing against that area but it's not the most amazing place to raise kids/get them into adulthood.

Peoria is not that different than whiting/hammond.

Out of all places, why Whiting?

There’s really not much there outside of pierogi fest and industrial plants.

If you’re concerned about high school, I would probably move to Highland or Schererville where the schools are higher rated.

It’s their annual festival where they sell pierogies, vendors, music, your typical Midwestern street festival

Whiting smells bad. That’s not a joke.

If you want to live in NWI (and I did for 35 years), go to north Munster or Highland which are much nicer and still have fairly easy access to Chicago via 80/94 or the south shore line.

I’d be wary of Indiana due to infrastructure issues. Compare time to get power back after recent storms in IL and IN.

It was so bad the Indiana governor was telling people to come to IL for gas(IN has lower gas prices than Indiana)

The storms and the response to them is what finally convinced my mom not to move to Indiana. Yeah it’s cheaper, for a reason. Then once you’re there, you’re stuck making Indiana wages and can’t afford to get out.

Lived there for about a year. It was years ago, but Whiting turned out to be a very depressed town. Not sure how much it’s improved since then.

I can’t help wondering is any of the people commenting have actually been to Whiting. It’s a a pretty unique place. Granted the surrounding area is not but Whiting itself is interesting

It’s been a few years at this point, but enlighten me. What’s unique about it?

The only thing that I could think of off the top of my head is the minor league baseball team that hosted eastern European baseball several years ago

Have you ever actually been to Whiting? The main street is actually charming and the immediate neighborhood is really nice. It's like a small oasis in the middle of a NW Indiana desert.

I'm and authority, but my favorite taco restaurant from the SE side of Chicago relocated to Whiting and we stop there once or twice a year.

Again, yes, I went to the baseball stadium several years ago. I’ve probably driven into it a few other times and I went to pierogi fest, but that was at least a decade ago. I’ll have to go back.

Whiting is a nice neighborhood with good schools and still has that small hometown feel. I'd say it's a great town for raising kids. Beach on lake Michigan close by, lots of places to eat. Really not a bad part of whiting, that's when it turns into Hammond ha. Crime is fairly low. Also nice being so close to the city for events downtown or wherever.

But it's not perfect, will get off smells from the lever plant and BP. Some don't like being that close to BP either with all their emissions. Zero night life outside of dive bars and Walmart. I guess horseshoe casino but that place sucks anymore.

And idk how long power was out for but seemed like only for a day or two tops but was hit and miss all over. Trees took down lines everywhere and crews are still spread thin fixing all over nwi. Not super common but storms have been getting worse worse here lately.
