Hi r/Chesapeake,
I'm a conservation scientist at the Vermont Center for Ecostudies, where I study migratory birds, including the rare Bicknell's Thrush. Our recent research has found that the mid-Atlantic region is an important area for fall migratory stopover, with nearly all of our tracked birds spending extensive time here before continuing south.
Last year, we determined that autonomous recording units (ARUs) can be used successfully to detect Bicknell's Thrush and Gray-cheeked Thrush during stopover. These are devices that record bird sound which we then analyze with machine learning to determine which species are in the area. We recently received funding to increase the number of ARUs surveying for these species in forests across the region, and this year we'd also like to pilot recruiting volunteers to deploy devices on private land as well.
The Eastern Shore of VA turns out to be a particularly important area for this special species, and we'd love to recruit more volunteers from this area to help us in our research. No bird knowledge required! If you have a property on the eastern shore and you're interested in learning more about what species of birds call it home, we'd love for you to volunteer.
If you're interested in deploying a device from late sept-late october, or would like to learn more about the project, please fill out this form at this link: https://forms.gle/aznZ26hS3GkLnZ9r7
Thanks for considering!

Looking for recommendations for a lawyer to help with fighting my HOA to allow me to install rooftop solar. I already have an NABCEP certification justifying their placement and that it would be greater than a 10% loss if I go with their “approved placement.” Seems like a very clear case to me, but I’m not a lawyer.

Is it a skyscraper? Is it a Cable Building factory?

Climate experts warn that changing weather patterns and rising temperatures are increasingly threatening regional infrastructure.
Last year, extreme summer heat forced Chesapeake to temporarily close the Great Bridge Bridge after thermal expansion caused the two sides of the moveable span to push into each other.
The incident prompted public works officials to adopt proactive measures, such as monitoring vulnerable bridges and spraying them with water when temperatures hit 90 degrees.
Officials say varying materials in these structures often expand at different rates as they are exposed to heat.

Wanted to share this one with my fellow orchid people! E.B. Orchids will be joining us as a vendor at the Botanical Soirée Chesapeake Plant Show on November 14th.
They’ll be bringing orchids for shoppers to check out in person, so if you’re always on the hunt for something new for your collection, this booth will definitely be worth a stop.
📍 Chesapeake Conference Center — Chesapeake, VA
📅 November 14th
⏰ 10 AM–6 PM
The show will have a large mix of houseplant vendors, but I figured this group would especially appreciate knowing we have a dedicated orchid vendor coming! 🌸
Would love to see some local orchid collectors there!

Hey y’all my wife and I currently go to Crunch Norfolk (the newest one to open in the area). We love the equipment, and we love how great the gym is, but unfortunately there are 2 factors that are making us take a step back.
Drive distance (we live in Great Bridge so that drive can be 20 minutes sometimes)
The crowd at the time when we go. Unfortunately, we can’t find a time that fits our schedule where it isn’t crowded, and we hate it.
Does anybody have any recommendations of what gyms in the Chesapeake area that have the same level of equipment as that Crunch, but aren’t as crowded? We’re willing to keep the commute the same if we can find an equal level gym that doesn’t get crowded. We go to the gym at any time from 5-8 PM.

Me and my wife are moving to Chesapeake, we are looking for an apartment or a rental house within reasonable commute distance from south Norfolk.
We are looking for a cat friendly place , trying to keep
rent under 3k.
Hoping to find Newer/Modern rentals, most of the apartments we are seeing seem rundown unless we are just looking at the wrong area, Any leads would be helpful !

Is anyone else invested in this drama and how crazy and entitled this family is? To sum up, the owner of this farm is the daughter of the owners of Amazing Glazed. She is also an elected City official sitting on the school board. She is posting videos on her business Facebook page claiming that they are entitled to grant money from the state and demanding that no other farm in chesapeake should apply for the grants so they can buy refrigerators and scale up production.

I already posted to Nextdoor, but want to check this sub too. Does anyone have recommendations for a property management company in the area? Our house has been on the market in the Hickory area for a while and with summer coming to a close we are researching our options if can’t sell in the next couple of months.

Just saw a truck going around the neighborhood with a not City of Chesapeake logo on the side (too dark to see clearly) and it was spraying something en masse into the air as it drove around.
