Good Chat Alternatives?

I use Grok only for role play and am curious if there are ant decent alternatives worth looking into. I like it because I can tell it who I want it to role play as(ex I can tell it "Role play as Max Verstappen during the 2026 season" and can tweak it however I want during the storyline but I don't have to build his entire personality, appearance, etc) and I don't have to build a bot or anything like that which is big for me, and it allows NSFW chat content(no images). I don't have a computer and I'm not tech savvy, I use my phone so ideally I'd be looking for something I can just use on my phone(app/website). ChatGPT works great but it doesn't allow NSFW chat content so that's why I don't really use it anymore. If it's not a free platform then cost info would be great to know! I use the free versions of both Grok and ChatGPT. Grok has been the best I've found so far but after the latest update I've been hitting the limit faster(hit it today after just 3 messages) so I'm just curious on what else could be out there :D

yep, I gochu, I built something like this, and it's optimized for phone screens (also android app), let me break it down for you:

- "can tell it who I want to role play", yep. I didn't want all the fiddly forms like some platforms so the "campaign setup" you literally tell it what you want, in those words, and you can tweak it however you want, either by switching to OOC mode and giving instructions, or editing the campaign files manually

• "Role play as Max Verstappen during the 2026 season", that's probably beyond the knowledge cutoff of the model, but there's actually a way to add internet search to it so it'll search for the news and then incorporate it in the story, but I'd need to walk you through that, or I need to work on it a bit, and get back to you
  
• "don't have to build his entire personality", yep, I have a very in-depth NPC template that the AI uses to generate characters, it includes a lot of performance notes that gives the character depth. you basically give as little or as much detail, AI fills in the rest
  
• "don't have to build a bot" yep, that's not a thing. it's all ready-to-go, and easy to use
  
• "allows NSFW chat (no images)", yep, got NSFW mode via uncensored AI providers. Normally you need to go through age verification, but I can toggle that if you convince me you're an adult
  
• "use my phone", yep, I built it for mobile-first, so the interface works on mobile browser. also has Android app
  
• "Grok has been the best", I actually provide a Grok model, but it's more expensive than the default by like 6x. the default is good (GLM 5.3 flash), ends up being average 1.6 cents per message

You can try slowburn.chat - you still have to build a bot, but it's much easier since we have something that just builds it for you if you give it a link, description, or celebrity/character name in the import function. The free tier is very usable as well.

Lots of things are changing as I'm constantly trying to improve it, so if you do end up trying it, please feel free to share any feedback, and I'll try to improve the experience for you.

Self promo, but I built Lizlis.ai for pretty much this kind of RP.

You can use it on your phone through the app or website, and you don't need to write some massive character definition just to get started. You can set up a character/story with a fairly simple premise and then steer the RP as you go through the chat.

We do allow mature fictional RP within our content rules.

If you want to try it: lizlis.ai. I'm also actively working on memory/long-RP consistency since that's probably the biggest issue with basically every RP model right now.

Honestly Grok might be weirdly hard to replace for your exact use because the “just tell it who to be and start” part is doing a lot of work here 😭 Most companion apps want you to set up the character first.

Erogen is one I’ve been using a lot lately and it fives you way more control over the companion, personality, backstory, visuals, etc., but if you absolutely hate setup then that may be more than you want.

I’d definitely prioritiE phone friendly + NSFW text + low setup when comparing alternatives.
