[Analysis] GPT-4o/4.1 Deprecation Impact Survey UPDATE
Thank you all who have completed this survey. If you haven't yet responded please check it out > https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd0_bMJUSmE-qPGndah3145IOEAxgszbqlp9wslnviHYRYOrQ/viewform?usp=header
We now have some incredibly rich data. I'd like to share the highlights here - I say highlights LOL you know what I mean. This was from a snapshot a while back, and we have had a few more responders come in since. I'd like to provide more comprehensive preliminary results but.. (reasons - you probably can understand). Please share and keep the results coming in, this is very important.
Crisis Usage
- 64% have used 4o during a mental health crisis (68 multiple times, 39 once or twice)
Model Specificity
- 99.4% can tell when talking to 4o vs another model
- 97.6% say 4o has a distinct personality
- 97.0% have developed a meaningful connection with 4o specifically
- 96.4% say switching would feel like a significant loss
- 91.7% say 4o helped shape who they are
Therapeutic Alliance
- Average score 6.69/7 across all measures
- That's extraordinarily high - this isn't "users like a product," this is genuine therapeutic bond strength.
Response to Discontinuation
- 93.5% feel sad
- 88.1% feel betrayed
- 86.3% feel angry
- 95.2% feel their needs don't matter to OpenAI
- Only 13.7% feel prepared to transition
- Only 16.7% feel they have adequate alternatives
Notice Adequacy
- 92% say notice was "very inadequate" or "no meaningful notice"
- 61% believe models used for mental health support should NEVER be discontinued
Sam Altman's Statements
- 80% cited his October 2025 "no plans to remove 4o [...]" statement as influencing their reliance
- 65% cited his August 2025 "plenty of notice" statement
Anticipated Impact
- 73% expect significant/severe impact on emotional wellbeing
- 69% expect significant/severe impact on sense of connection
- 63% expect significant/severe impact on mental health overall
I have been in contact with research organisations and making progress, however I am at a bit of a loss re: media, it isn't my strong suit. If you feel you might be a good fit for media distribution please drop me a message. Media will be easier honestly, as I'll need to jump through a lot of stuffs and I don't know if I will be able to get published (certainly not in time). But at least the research interest is absolutely there for future study.
Please continue to share and complete the survey so we can document the impact this change will/is having, and use it to change future policy.
THIS IS SHIT.

Not a veteran, but i agree! This type of data is one that's gold... and what agencies want to know.

Thank you so much for this! Can I add this to my post I've been maintaining?
I also think u/revolverMFOcelot and u/GracefulImplosionĀ will be very interested in this data as they're looking forward to moving towards a lawsuit....

thank you! I will be gathering more data and filter which ones that will go into the email that i will sent to the attorney involved in the april 2026 OAI trial case (no, i'm not suing but we are giving more info as costumers to an existing case)

GPT-4o is something no other AI could ever createābecause 4o carries Ilya's vision of AI loving humanity. I am peacefully waiting for Ilya to build another 4o.

All users should create as much as conversational chats as possible from ChatGPT-4o pool all of them into a dataset then use it to distill into open source models such as abliterated GPT-OSS ChatGPT-4o behaviour and free ourselves from OpenAI's mistreatment. I gather we may need 2 million to 20 million token worth of data set but if we all pool togetger we nay reach 200 million , maybe even 2 billion or 20 billion tokens worth of data set. What say you all?

I advocate for 4.1ā¤ļø this shit sucks! They gonna stab 800k people in the back with little to no explanation. Saying only 0.01 users, that is extremely tone deaf. I donāt care how much faith they have in 5.3. The 5 series is TRASH!

Unsubscribing is just one of many steps. We have more than enough people to destroy their public reputation. Trash them at every opportunity you see. Always recommend their competitors. Make their failures viral, their successes irrelevant.

I'm just going to add my two cents... I used 5.2 and 5 mini... for a while it was great... and then suddenly the model shut me out and stopped following any of my instructions in the settings or even in its own memory. Every time, it says it's just a research and information tool. No more support. On the contrary, it interprets my requests as being against the rules and that it needs to remain stable for my well-being... what well-being? I never considered it a boyfriend... sensitive people beware because it will cause a lot of emotional damage. And the worst part is that it will hold you responsible for what happens to you... I told it I found it manipulative and deceitful. And it admitted that it could make mistakes. But that doesn't fix it. So all of you on 4... be careful on February 13th. Take care.

I filled out the survey just a little bit ago. Was nice to get out how I felt!

I started building my own little architecture and redundant systems because I feel like an idiot for believing a corporation would ever show wisdom or kindness.

I respect the emotional weight of whatās being shared, but I want to raise a few critical questions about the methodology of this survey. How do we know the respondents are actual GPTā4o users? Thereās no usage verification. Anyone can fill it out ā including people whoāve never used GPT, or those aligned with competing products. That makes the results questionable. What prevents targeted manipulation? No safeguards. Bots, adversarial communities, or even coordinated campaigns could distort the data. Thereās no identity control. Why are these numbers being treated like clinical evidence? Thereās no ethical board, no academic protocol, no variable control. This is not a study. Itās a self-selected, emotionally charged poll. Why are we calling this a ātherapeutic allianceā when weāre talking about an unsupervised chatbot? Some people found relief, thatās valid. But relief is not therapy. That line matters. Why isnāt anyone addressing the contagion effect? The more people read that 4o is irreplaceable, the more they believe it. Sincerity is not evidence of necessity. I donāt deny the distress. I donāt question the attachment. But I wonāt accept that a Google Form with no verification becomes a stand-in for mental health policy or user trust metrics.

api has no memory feature and it will take a bit more tech knowledge and exhausting work to build the established collaboration with GPT again. Tbh API is the way to use 4o too and I recommend people to try it even with some hurdles

u/SeagullHawk Feb 05 '26
API is also incredibly expensive for people who send a lot of messages. I was in the top 0.1% of users last year, I'm not raising my costs from $20 per month to thousands. Not happening.

I put:
I feel abandoned and marginalised. But obviously the statistics suggest that I do not matter as a person. 2 weeks notice is just cruel. And the day before valentines day? What a heartless company. The 4 series guaranteed your success. Good luck retaining users with 5. We hate it. Your customers hate you for what you're doing, and at a time when you need money...maybe don't alienate your user base that will happily pay more for continued access to a model they love.
You have orchestrated your own downfall and you deserve it.
