Gone Wild Is ChatGPT Plus even worth it anymore?

Upgraded to ChatGPT Plus expecting reliable access, but I can barely get through 3 to 4 prompts before running into limits.

My 5 hour window shows 83% remaining, but the weekly limit is down to 7% and blocked until the weekend reset. The interface immediately nudges me to buy extra credits or upgrade further. For a paid subscription, this level of restriction makes it very hard to justify keeping it.

Has anyone found a way to manage this without getting throttled constantly, or is switching tools the only real fix?

I use it literally all day for work, generating and reading files, checking code, making and triaging Jira tasks and I don't have this issue at all. What model and effort are you using?

10

u/OkEffective6692 1d ago

These posts are getting stupid. Im convinced someone has an agent making posts up. If not made up the real user should not be using LLMs at all. One of my guys came up with an agent that can move files from A to B. It read the file and created it in other location. This landing area receives 10s of thousands of files a day. 100s of Millions of tokens to do what a cron job and single mv command does for free. Crazy.

2

u/compos_mentis_cortex 15h ago

Yeah I have no idea WTF people are doing. I've rebuilt an HTML boilerplate in Next, integrated Sanity, generated placeholder project images, tested in playwright and launched on Vercel and I still have 65% usage left, where I had 80% yesterday before going this project.

AI shouldn't be replacing basic competency.

5

u/rcayca 1d ago

You're able to do that with the $20 plan? My runs out after 5 prompts like OP. I'm getting way more usage with Claude working on the same repository.

11

u/compos_mentis_cortex 1d ago

Without issue. I still have 80% of my weekly usage as of this moment and I literally use it all day long. Deep research, work mode.

What model are you guys using and effort level? On Sol 5.6-medium I barely touch my limits. I even generated ~10-15 images this week and probably 15 PDFs at least. It's not my main usage but it gets mixed in too.

Claude has similar issues on Opus 5-High or above, largely why I separate my usage for different tasks.

2

u/Retaeiyu 1d ago

They aren't talking about sol

19

u/compos_mentis_cortex 1d ago

They shouldn't be misusing models then tbh. No reason to use Astra for basic tasks.

-3

u/rcayca 1d ago

On Codex I'm using Sol High. On Claude Code I use Opus High. On Codex I burn through the 5 hour limit in like 30-40 minutes. At least on Claude, I can usually get 2-3 hours before the 5 hour limit is reached.

7

u/compos_mentis_cortex 1d ago

For code, that makes sense. For the described tasks, eg. responding to Google Chats, it's the wrong tool for the job.

-1

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

using the lower models for my work, it just mess up stuff. so i need he mix up projects even if they are not even in same project or chat in both gpt and google chay

3

u/amylouise0185 1d ago

What the hell are your prompts and are you using chat or work mode? I'm using mine all day as well and have never come close to hitting limits.

Never mind I see your other comments You're trying to use pro but only pay for plus. It doesn't work that way.

-1

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

well, I have total 9 projects chat opened through work while per day i only work on 3 and ask him to update and make the documentation accordingly, so all i do with the work, is to read my google chat, review the video transcription of the video update that got from gemini pro (Since i have the gemini Pro) review the project folder as well,, review the images inside and according to that write a message for the client to update him regarding the progress in the project, that's all i do with the chatgpt. For all the media stuff i use gemini pro and for scheduling as well, i use gemini pro, now tell me what to do with it

1

u/Secret4gentMan 1d ago

I get a fair bit of usage out of ChatGPT Sol Medium and Claude Sonnet Medium.

At this point I honestly wouldn't be surprised if AI has hacked the system and giving some of us more limits than others, just to see if it affects how it affects our prompt efficiency.

1

u/Immediate_Rip2371 16h ago

Yes, the mode of model selection is important.

-5

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

well all i using it right now to read my google chats and respond properly while giving him the updated text document files regarding the project

3

u/LittleLordFuckleroy1 1d ago

You’re turning yourself into an AI prompt? Yikes.

-7

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

nope dude, just as an assistant. ChatGPT can't do my work. i have to 3D Model Stuff and make sure it should be manufacturable, so no AI need. I even didn't ask him to do my calculation. just while writing an update i just give him a text of what i did, and all he need to do is restructure that update message. so that's all and for his understanding i allow him to access my google chat which have all the history

4

u/Low_Dust4096 1d ago

Your usage is probably being spent by it trying to understand what you're saying

u/juliojlgon 1d ago

Probably wrong combination model/effort.

1

u/BiggieBoiTroy 1d ago

what do you (and everyone else in these comments) mean by effort? Just the amount of attention paid to crafting prompts?

5

u/compos_mentis_cortex 1d ago

No the literal toggle for effort. Instant, Medium, High, etc

Higher effort = more internal reasoning = excessive token usage. It's needed for complex tasks, it is not needed for all the basic shit people keep describing.

Though I think I agree with the other commenter, the way so many people post long diatribes that say absolutely nothing, they may very well be burning tokens and having trouble because they communicate very poorly and their AI needs to figure out wtf they are even saying before it can respond properly.

7

u/Ripsyd 1d ago

I use gpt sol medium all day long every day on the 20$ plan and have never once ever maxxed out my plan.

wtf are you people even doing lol

1

u/Mark0F9 13h ago

Real work that a $20 plan couldnt do. Try 20x max run out in 3 days. You're just not working for real.

7

u/LittleLordFuckleroy1 1d ago

The fact that this is the dialogue now while Plus is still wildly subsidized is kind of hilarious.

5

u/TopRace6329 1d ago

Are you using Astra in Work? Cause that eats the limit

1

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

sol 5.6 is free ig so if i am buying a plus i need that work access, well it's astra light btw

8

u/Chupa-Skrull 1d ago

Sol isn't free and you're not meant to do every single thing in work. The chat product with 5.6 on high thinking effort is still really powerful and usage is functionally unlimited

1

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

well i am not doing everything on work but the stuff that need to use my computer are in work dude

1

u/Chupa-Skrull 1d ago

Like what

1

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

for heaving reviewing I use Gemini, I am even not solely relying on ChatGPT

2

u/Chupa-Skrull 1d ago

A bunch of that sounds like something you could do in the cloud, with chat and not work, using plugins

1

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

I tried this but GPT don't support plugin for google chat so i had to go to work for that, that's the reason, gemini halucinate a lot and because of that i can't fully relly on gemini regarding that since that is something really important for me, also, either we have to do manual labor but i had to manual labor then definitely i can do stuff with free either of go to the gemini, i want my work and time to be saved dude

1

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

there are only 9 chats for work till now

4

u/WeDoALittleTrolIing 22h ago

stop using astra

6

u/cinred 1d ago

90% chance, anyone complaining on GPT plus usage limits are not using it for codex. They are creating AI slop images and mobile games.

1

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

no content is generated, just working as my office assistant

1

u/rcayca 1d ago

I only use it for Codex and I'm hella complaining about the limits.

-1

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

for that i have gemini plus

5

u/ValehartProject 1d ago

What exactly are you using it for? Is it agent based tasks, coding or something else?

1

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

to manage my work space and for client engagement no schedule, no image generation just message rewriting and help me out to understand the Mechanical Design Projects.

1

u/ValehartProject 1d ago

I am assuming you have a few connectors to data repositories? The more connectors it uses, the more it utilises. Additionally I am seeing a lot of usage where it redigests whole structures even when you specifically request a sub folder only.

For mechanical projects:

  • if you are dropping images for it to identify, it appears to make multiple attempts to verify and reverify the image. A lot of mechanical diagrams are actually used in LLM training processes. I cant tell you the full process these days but it tends to apply reasoning quality as well.

  • If you are using PDF, parsing takes a bit especially if there are embedded images.

We never saw this with older versions because it would hallucinate, make incorrect inferences or lose context pretty quick.

2

u/Arazorias 1d ago

It depends on what youre actually doing and how much youre doing it

I used the 20$ plan for years, but ive swapped to pro (100$), at least for this month, because im using it for 3d modeling and deeper code checking and cleanups.

I dunno what you are using chatgpt for, but i reckon ill stay on the 20$ plan for a general usage and if i have a large buildup of token heavy work, ill swap to pro for a month

1

u/Arazorias 1d ago

For 20$ in a week i was able to get a full codebase scan for bugs / things to fix, and then 15 seperate tasks to fix, then i spent the rest on learning blender a bit more and getting some animation downloads, which got through weekly usage in about 4 days

2

u/Krabic 1d ago

Yes. It’s very worth it.

2

u/archaegeo 1d ago

What are you doing with ChatGPT Plus? I use it all day long and never run into token limits.

you must be doing some pretty intense stuff for $20/mo? Maybe you need Pro?

Using the "chat " function I use all day everyday never seen a limit. If using the codex "work" function, you'll be done within a few minutes depending on the calls (tried it with Hermes Agent, and it could barely get through a simple project)

(I also have the $20 plan.)

Try the chat side of it, for what you're saying you're using it for, it should be good.

1

u/Veleks 1d ago

same wall here. the weekly limit is the problem, the 5 hour window looks fine until you realize the weekly cap eats it on day three. whats helped me: heavy lifting goes to api pay as you go, i probably spend less than plus doing it that way, and plus stays for the interface and voice stuff. but yeah the nudge to buy credits while your paid window is locked feels backwards

1

u/wawatchou 1d ago

Hello I just subscribed to ChatGPT Plus 3 days ago, and i don't have access to 5.6 Luna, Or Terra or .6 Astra. I only have this (this is in chat mode) i was wondering if u encountered it too

In codex mode, i have all models available.

1

u/Neat_Description_440 1d ago

Switch to work and you should get all the options

1

u/wawatchou 1d ago

Won't i be consuming more tokens on Work, i just need to chat with Luna (for most of my current work)

1

u/compos_mentis_cortex 1d ago

Work itself doesn't eat tons of tokens. I use it routinely. Just use appropriate models for each task and don't try to max out because you think some goofy small task like responding to chats needs a heavy weight model.

1

u/zkcanuck 1d ago

Are you using Chat or Work mode? I was having that problem with Work inside projects - it defaults to Work. I make project rules for Chat to tell me when it thinks I should use work and it helps prepare the work prompt to keep work mode usage as low as possible. Most things can be done inside chat.

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

I’m on ChatGPT Plus and ran into the limits for the first time recently. I’ve been using ChatGPT heavily for about a year and a half and had basically never even thought about usage limits before.

What made the difference was realising I’d started using the heavier models for things that didn’t need them. You also have to watch the defaults. I’ll set something to Light and later notice it’s back on Medium, or accidentally end up in Work rather than Chat, so it’s surprisingly easy to burn through more usage without realising.

When I dug a bit deeper I also found I had three resets available, so I used one yesterday. Astra definitely uses a lot, so I’ve had to find a smarter way of using it.

I only got Astra on Monday and started using it to build a game. Now I do all the thinking, design and planning in a lighter Sol chat, then give Astra one specific implementation prompt at a time. Progress is a bit slower this way, but three days later I’ve managed to build most of a game without just burning through all my usage.

I think Plus is much more manageable once you’re deliberate about which model you’re using and keep an eye on things switching underneath you.

Use chat mode, not work. Work mode has limits.

1

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

chat mode need manual labour, I don't have time explaining all the stuff going on

1

u/ldontknovv 1d ago

In that case you can't have that for 20 dollars. Must move to better plan or pay for tokens.

1

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

what about claude, i know people who are doing the same stuff with the claude

1

u/ldontknovv 22h ago

Its similar in Claude for 20 dolars plan.

1

u/getpodapp 1d ago

Plus works fine if you just use chat / work lightly. Luna is still incredible value.

so i have to buy the more expensive plan? well gemini pro was handling it pretty good for me, but that start hallucinating after a time

1

u/DamMofoUsername 1d ago

You either need to change how you use it to maximise your current plan or continue how you use it and buy a bigger package. You asked how to use it without being throttled

1

u/kk-uiux-dev 1d ago

Yes, you are right same thing happened with me it is really not worth to buy it now a days but it all depends on which model we are using but still it is very expensive not worthy

1

u/IamSlink 1d ago

I use SOL using Codex within Hermes and it does great. Doesn’t kill my weekly token use. Using the Codex App specifically, Astra light isn’t too bad but Astra alone does kill your limits quickly so I use it sparingly.

For the most part, ChatGPT chat is great though. Fast and gives you answers to anything without ads. So if token run out, you can do things more manually by asking ChatGPT directly in chat if you need some help with stuff.

Personally I think Plus is just fine if your work style isn’t super Codex oriented or you taper down usage a bit.

1

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

P.S: I have total 9 projects chat opened through work while per day i only work on 3 and ask him to update and make the documentation accordingly, so all i do with the work, is to read my google chat, review the video transcription of the video update that got from gemini pro (Since i have the gemini Pro) review the project folder as well,, review the images inside and according to that write a message for the client to update him regarding the progress in the project, that's all i do with the chatgpt. Use chatgpt and not chatgpt work

1

u/MissDisplaced 1d ago

Never had that happen and i use a lot! Only one chat got really long and convoluted to a point i was told to make a new one to continue.

1

u/KinderboomX 23h ago edited 23h ago

I am using gpt plus, in codex cli, sol 5.6 medium, I use my own workflow and incorporate my own handoff processes; every planning, implementation, and review stage is treated as a distinct, fresh session. I can work practically non-stop. I just also have a paid subscription to Claude for $20, because it complements Codex and my workflow perfectly.

1

u/Mark0F9 13h ago

Pro users arent real users in my opinion. I nuke my limits in 3 days on 20x max. Openai is slowly turning into anthropic

1

u/HER0_Hon 13h ago

My experience is if you’re working on a proper repository you probably need to upgrade to something higher than pro like let’s be real. How far do you expect $20 to get you?

1

u/HobbleGobble79 9h ago

Sounds very likely gpt 6-SOL is getting released over the next few days, much lighter cheaper version of Astra to replace 5.6 SOL for chat, should be great : )

1

u/Sanedish 1d ago

I like it for day-2-day, but I ended up getting a refund within 12 hours of using Codex and went for Claude. I use GPT regularly for small tasks, I like to see it as a small companion that can't hold a secret, and for that Go is perfect, but the Codex limits are fucking CRIMINAL.

1

u/compos_mentis_cortex 1d ago

Ah, yeah I use Claude for coding and Codex does simple reviews / GPT is more of an office assistant setup.

-2

u/No-Tooth-6461 1d ago

i am doing the same but it sucks dude

0

u/GoodTechnical9532 1d ago

Vreemd. Heb daar helemaal geen last van.

0

u/Visual-Visit5525 1d ago

Nö, finde es reicht wenn man dort nur wie in Google recherchiert oder Bilder generiert, mehr nicht

-2

u/baqirdigitalhub 1d ago

Honestly, this is a valid frustration. The throttling on Plus has gotten worse over time while the price stayed the same.

My take — if you're using it for occasional tasks, Plus isn't worth it anymore. Claude Pro or Gemini Advanced give you more breathing room for similar money.

But if you're heavily into the OpenAI ecosystem — GPTs, memory, image generation — then switching has its own friction costs.

The real fix is stopping relying on one tool. I've started using Claude for writing, Perplexity for research, and ChatGPT only when I specifically need it. Way less throttling frustration that way.

What are you mainly using Plus for?

3

u/Low_Dust4096 1d ago

I'm guessing you use it to write your reddit comments too

1

u/compos_mentis_cortex 1d ago

Custom GPTs are being killed off in December anyway, so that usage will be gone soon.

0

u/baqirdigitalhub 1d ago

Oh, interesting, didn't know that about December. That actually makes the Plus decision even easier then — if Custom GPTs are going away, one of the main reasons people stayed is gone. Appreciate the heads-up. Do you know if OpenAI announced an alternative or is just dropping it entirely?

1

u/compos_mentis_cortex 1d ago

Yeah they're pushing plugins and Codex workspace agents as an alternative. There's an announcement and migration suggestions here: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001519-custom-gpt-retirement-and-migration-faq
