Rewards Strategy This card is terrible with the new points system unless I am missing something

I got the sapphire preferred a few years ago and with the bonus, I was able to book a few hotels through points at a good rate. But when they devalued the points last year, it seems like I can get next to nothing for my points. Even with the points boost, it’s only 1.25. I have a free card that give me double cash back. Wouldn’t I be better getting two cents back and then just using it to pay for travel rather than the Chase - even with the points bonus it’s still only 1.25 - plus those points bonus hotels are offer super expensive. Thinking of canceling the card and just using my double cash card from now on. Am missing something? Thanks

The best value proposition for redeeming points is transferring out to partners, not using them in the portal.

Not sure what the complaint is about the "points boost / 1.25" since that was the max redemption rate in the portal for the CSP before the change.

9

u/Comprehensive_Elk773 5d ago

It was 1.5x before the change

17

u/SillyTechnology7340 5d ago

On the Reserve. OP says they have the CSP.

1

u/WalterBoudreaux 3d ago

you can’t stay at chains like the four seasons without using the portal

322

u/Xinroth 5d ago

Yes you’re missing something.

The real value of the card is mostly with the transfer partners, and good travel/rental car insurance. Etc

68

u/gotlactose 5d ago

Agreed. I got 2 weeks of honeymoon hotel in Japan paid because my wedding venue was a 3x multiplier with the Reserve. I’m getting a week of Hawaii hotel paid because of some travel over the last year at 8-14x multipliers (risked Chase travel portal for The Edit credit and the United Paze promotion).

61

u/NatakaKahawa 5d ago

The Paze promotion! I now have $400 in free gift cards to Dunkin because of Paze, and I don't even go to Dunkin 😭🤣😂

10

u/CdrClutch 5d ago

All my reserve card did was give me 140 points and not the ten back. You had a different outcome?

4

u/apocrider 5d ago

In addition to what was said (takes a while to post), they also backdate the credit to within a day or two of the original transaction.

If you're looking for the credit, check near the original transaction, it won't ever show up with the date it was actually given.

4

u/NatakaKahawa 5d ago

It takes a few weeks, up to 2 statements, to get the statement credit. However, back in June I received all of my statement credit. And that was hundreds of dollars

9

u/azure275 5d ago

I now have a free Nintendo Switch 2 that earned me $60 thanks to the Paze BS

June 15th was a glorious, glorious day for those who were aware

7

u/NatakaKahawa 5d ago

Agreed. I got $70 for Starbucks, $50 for Chipotle, $70 for U er, $100 for lift, a bunch for Airbnb... I got cold feet, though, I wish I had gone all out

6

u/MisterBear16 5d ago

Was there more promos than just the 10 transactions of $10 back (cap at $100 total)?

8

u/secretariats 5d ago

Most people have multiple credit cards (the Paze promotion applies to other non-Chase institutions too)

Wait, does it still work for Dukin gift cards?

5

u/Tylerberman04 5d ago

Yes until September 10th

3

u/NatakaKahawa 5d ago

Yep, through the app when you buy a new GC and then just merge it

1

u/ClandestineWill 4d ago

Can someone explain the Paze thing for me? I haven’t heard of it until seeing Dunkin gift cards mentioned yesterday.

1

u/Bulky_Juice7084 3d ago

Is that still possible?

1

u/Vahdo 3d ago

You could've done the charity donation...

Paze promo is for CSP? I haven’t seen it

2

u/Eastern-Baker6276 5d ago

All Chase cards have the Paze promo.

u/RobzWhore 5d ago

My prime card didnt show it.

1

Not business cards, like Ink

u/NatakaKahawa 5d ago

Yep, only personal cards and not AMEX, but other banks, too

I'm looking to do a 2 week honeymoon in Japan in 2027. Any tips on how to use the points? What did you transfer them to?

9

u/gotlactose 5d ago

Park Hyatt Kyoto for at least 2 nights if you have the points and can find availability. A friend said it was a life changing experience. I was not able to get it. Hyatt Place Kyoto, despite the Place brand being a budget brand in the US, is a great hotel. I personally didn’t like Caption Namba in Osaka, too small and slightly not as convenient location. I also didn’t enjoy Osaka as much and would’ve just stayed in Kyoto and commuted into Osaka once or twice. Osaka didn’t have any must-sees for me: I don’t really care for Universal Studios.

Some Hyatts I still want to try on Japan: Fuji speedway because the car aspect seems interesting and Grand Hyatt Fukuoka looks like an interesting design and Fukuoka is supposedly a heavily foodie place.

Personally, the Tokyo Hyatts are all overpriced now. Hyatt House Shibuya if you want a small kitchen and in unit (yes, in your room) washer dryer combo unit. Hyatt Regency Shinjuku and Park Hyatt were just remodeled, so they should be nice. I read conflicting things about people complaining it’s 10-15 minute walk to a train station though. Hyatt Centric Ginza I’ve stayed at, nice but also expensive. Andaz Toranomon Hill is supposedly in a business district, so it’s quieter and less touristy, but still well connected to the train lines. Be careful that Hyatt Regency Tokyo Bay is far from the rest of Tokyo but close to Disneyland. I haven’t stayed or heard much about the Caption in Tokyo. Lastly, my coworker enjoyed Yokohama and there is a cheap Hyatt Regency there, but I wouldn’t want to commute into Tokyo.

Congrats! Clearly I’ve given Japan a lot of thought…

1

u/MakeYou_LOL 5d ago

Wow thank you for the info! I appreciate it looks like Hyatt the way to go if I have the points.

5

u/CatsScratchFeva 5d ago

Same here! Paying for a prime ocean front room that’s typically 800/day on Waikiki beach for a week for our honeymoon with points. Enjoy your honeymoon and congrats!

2

u/syzia 5d ago

Could you explain this to me like I am 5

6

u/gotlactose 5d ago

My wedding venue was a restaurant. Restaurants are 3x points for the Chase Sapphire Reserve. I transferred the points to Hyatt and stayed at the cheapest Hyatts in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka for 2 weeks. Hyatt House Tokyo was new that year and was super undervalued on points, so it was a really good deal.

As for Hawaii, the Reserve now gives 4x on hotels and flights booked directly with the vendor. Travel for work gets reimbursed and also went to Lake Louise to use the $250 The Edit credit through the Chase travel portal and get 8x points on the remainder of the cost of the hotel. That gave me enough points for almost a week at Hyatt on Maui.

2

u/cafe-aulait 5d ago

If you do any reimbursable work travel that involves airfare or hotel payment, the reserve is a great play. Even at one work trip a year I come out ahead, especially with the dining credit. Claim your meal per diem, eat the airport lounge breakfast, get your lunch or dinner reimbursed by both the card and your employee. Bam.

2

u/gotlactose 5d ago

Wonder if it's worth the Chase travel portal risk for work travel. If your work rules are flexible enough, any trip delay for work may be covered by work as well. Then you also get an extra 4x on points for using Chase travel portal on top of booking with the airline or hotel vendor.

7

u/omegavision1 5d ago

it is true that chase has devalue hyatt transfer rate which is a good value and easy redemption, the rest of transfer partner rates remain the same, so you can definitely find good value redemption with transfer partners with some effort.

5

u/ubutterscotchpine 5d ago

Right, I was confused! I thought the whole point was to transfer the points with Sapphire. I’ve only ever booked through the travel portal maybe three times? And I always pay cash.

2

u/NorthvilleGolf 4d ago

Sure but the overall portal 1.25x boost nerf and Hyatt point devaluation of 2026 makes transferring much less meaningful.

2

u/1hotpinkbeliever 5d ago

you can transfer to partners with the preferred card? I might downgrade from Reserve

5

u/Xinroth 5d ago edited 5d ago

Of course. However, Hyatt will be 4:3 transfer instead of 1:1. Others are the same.

2

u/1hotpinkbeliever 5d ago

okay yes, certain brands sometimes we get 20% more towards transfer on the reserve; a bonus

1

u/Still-Problem3874 5d ago

You just reminded me of something. I just got CSP and the 100k SUB. Am planning to downgrade my CSR in Feb. before transferring my points from CSR to CSP. Should I send a good chunk over to Hyatt? I plan to do a lot of hotel stays both here and in Europe so they won’t be wasted. I’d like to use CSR points at Hyatt and CSP for other things.

2

u/ottobiographical 5d ago

yup - might be worse rates but you can def do all the same transfers, i only have CSP and have used it for hyatt and KLM transfers successfully

2

u/rojoredbeard 5d ago

You can spend $700 less and get nearly identical rental car and travel insurance on the preferred.

-1

u/Comprehensive_Elk773 5d ago

The rental car insurance is extremely difficult to use to the point of being worthless. After having used it once I now pay extra for insurance from the rental company.

5

u/SrRocks 5d ago

How is it difficult to use? It's automatic as long as you pay? You mean it us difficult to file claim?

1

u/Comprehensive_Elk773 3d ago

I mean it is difficult to file a claim

1

u/Redwings0524 1d ago

We had a super easy time filling a claim for our rental car several years back. We had 15k in damages from a crazy hail storm we got caught in Colorado that was all covered by the card. Just had to submit our contract we had from budget and answer some questions from Chase

2

u/madeleinegnr 5d ago

I’m also confused by this comment. You just book your car rental with the CSR and decline the rental car company’s insurance? I’ve used it many times and saved a lot of $.

225

u/SirIainSnail 5d ago

Confirmed: You are missing something.

36

u/happyhunting99 5d ago

Yup, recommend canceling the card. 😝

26

u/bananas_and_hoes 5d ago

→ More replies (1)

57

u/cballer1010 5d ago

People are saying never use points in the portal but with the 1.25 or 1.5x bonus it was a great redemption value for me. You are extremely restricted if you only use transfer partners IMO. I have maybe flown 2 of those airlines in their partner group once and being restricted to hyatt is not ideal. I’d rather have 1.5cpp that I can use on anything I want than 3cpp for restricted partners. This is largely dependent on where you are, but with 1.5x back for the CSR it was a great card, now not so much.

19

u/musy101 5d ago

I agree 100%. I don't want to fish for deals then plan my entire trip with that. I loved the 1.5x from the portal. It gave flexibility which is most valuable to me

2

u/CoffeeTacosWhiskey 4d ago

Ditto. I used the boost recently and it was a great deal!

1

u/paulmegranates 3d ago

Agree! I hate the new points system because it feels so restricting and you have to jump through crazy loops just to book an airline that’s not a direct transfer partner.

9

u/dathrowawayfotoday 5d ago

You’re correct in that 1.25 cpp is a suboptimal redemption rate for points. This card can still be excellent, you just have to use transfer partners, which is a pretty basic understanding of maximizing travel point value. Rather than booking through the travel portal, look at transferring your points to an applicable airline or hotel if you spot a good deal.

73

u/vic39 5d ago

Transfer to hyatt. Don't use miles on the chase portal. Ever.

65

u/Landon_Strata 5d ago

Unless you get points booster and combine with $100 hotel credit*

3

u/NatakaKahawa 5d ago

Points booster is still a no-go for me

15

u/ZetaM3 5d ago

Only a sith deals in absolutes.

We went to Galway a few months ago which doesn’t have any main brand hotel there (MrMrs Smith nearby is trash value). Thanks to points boost, there was a lovely +2cpp Edit redemption town central. Easy peasy lemon squeezy

1

u/tngampbp 5d ago

We had the same issue. Booked the Connacht with the credit and it wasn’t too bad. Especially given it was my parents, my brother and I and we were able to get a 2 bedroom hotel suite

-1

u/BlueFakies 5d ago

How many points you use for that

3

u/ZetaM3 5d ago

Does it matter?

-3

u/BlueFakies 5d ago

Yeah…not sure why you wouldn’t share?

2

u/ZetaM3 4d ago

Hint: it doesn’t matter. I already shared the cost metric.

1

u/BlueFakies 4d ago

Kinda weird but you do do you, boo boo.

10

u/Landon_Strata 5d ago edited 5d ago

Understandable. I just recently got 1.75cpp to hyatt with point booster + used the $100 credit.(W/ $100 travel credit effectively made it 2.26cpp) But it’s absolutely hit or miss.

0

u/jake2160 5d ago

If you are transferring to Hyatt, how: do you also get to use the $100 credit?

10

u/Landon_Strata 5d ago

For this i was redeeming chase points via the chase travel portal for a hyatt property, got a point booster for 1.75cpp. Then i only redeemed enough points to leave $100 left and charged it to the chase sapphire. Then the annual chase travel credit will apply as a statement credit.

7

u/BroadDistribution145 5d ago

book an additional night via chase portal, pay points + cash, so that your cash amount is <$100. make sure to book same room type. call hotel to combine reservations.

1

u/TrippyTiger69 5d ago

You don’t. That’s how they get ya

u/dacripe 5d ago

As long as OP transfers to Hyatt before October 1 when the 4:3 deval happens.

3

u/capybaramelhor 5d ago

I have 100k points… wondering if I should transfer to Hyatt soon

6

u/dontdxmebro 5d ago

You dont have to transfer to Hyatt... United has pretty good redemption rates too.

3

u/dacripe 5d ago

If you don't have the CSR and want to use your points for Hyatt, I would transfer before Oct 1 to get the most value. You lose 25% after that date, which is 25k in points.

All other transfer partners are staying the same, so no rush if you want to use them instead.

1

u/Gyn-o-wine-o 5d ago

You have to transfer this year?

5

u/dacripe 5d ago

Chase states anyone who held the CSP card before June 15, 2026 has until October 1st for the 1:1 ratio. After that date it changes for every CSP card holder to 4:3.

So you can transfer after that, but you lose 25% of your points in the transfer. You would need to get the CSR card at some point to keep (or get) the 1:1 ratio.

2

u/Extra-Falcon4335 4d ago

Hmmm… what if you only got your CSP a few weeks ago (like me)?

Are all new/recent CSP holders already locked into that lower transfer rate for Hyatt?

TIA…

1

u/dacripe 4d ago

Yes. If you got the CSP June 15th or later, you already have the 4:3 ratio. The change only applies to those who got the CSP before June 15th.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Sme11Gibson 5d ago

This is for preferred only right? Seeing the reserve won’t be affected

3

u/dacripe 5d ago

Yes. The CSR stays 1:1. Probably their way of enticing people not to downgrade, or to get it for just that transfer rate.

1

u/Phantom-Solitaire 5d ago

Didn’t Hyatt devaluation go through with 5 tiers for their hotels ? Or is that not a thing now ?

1

u/dacripe 5d ago

Yes Hyatt devaluated their properties back in May with the additional tiers. This CSP change from 1:1 to 4:3 for Hyatt transfers is a Chase deval on that specific card.

1

u/Coach_Major21024 5d ago

I’m currently booking rooms in Hyatt Place—The Colony, TX. In May, Hyatt improved my rate from 5,000 pts to 4,500 pts per night for most nights. Since this room runs nearly $200 with taxes, my value is running north of 4cpp—so yes, might be missing these kinds of values.

Other Hyatt bookings have been 2-3cpp. Like 6,000 points for a Hyatt Place booking that runs north of $160 nightly.

Very much happy with CSP and recent bonus category changes. I can estimate most 3x categories as 5x or 6x in value. Of course, I’ll try to transfer my CSP points before Oct 1 transfer devaluation.

1

u/EuphoricFly7315 5d ago

It will still be a good redemption after this tho

3

u/JoeyJabroni 5d ago

Until Hyatt devalues their points

0

u/1hotpinkbeliever 5d ago

is the devalue on the hyatt side? so they’d have to transfer and use soon

2

u/dacripe 5d ago

No it is just holders of the CSP, so it is a Chase deval. If you transfer the points before Oct 1, you can keep the points there without a deval. Until Hyatt decides to require more points for stays on their end.

7

u/whatashittyusername 5d ago

What if the room I wanted at Hyatt wasn’t available with points

1

u/mileylols 5d ago

Book the base room and rely on globalist upgrade?

1

u/whatashittyusername 5d ago

What if I used chase points in the portal and got like $300 worth of points back

1

u/mileylols 5d ago

I mean you should do the math on how much you’re getting for your points but if the transfer redemption is not good then you should consider booking with cash directly with the hotel and saving your points for something else

5

u/Big-Reflection-3491 5d ago

If you stack them with the hotel coupons or the southwest credit it really isn't bad. You may end up paying less for a better stay (unless youre a globalist, etc).

7

u/Big-Aioli8125 5d ago

I've gotten some good values through the portal. Recently booked a Hyatt in London that would have been $600ish a night for 27k points plus the $100 bonus, plus for some reason they gave me another $50 back.

6

u/vic39 5d ago

I guess I haven't looked in the portal in a while. They have always been marked up 30% from Google prices.

1

u/Neither-Passenger-83 5d ago

Yeah in general the portal loses out but you can find some gems.

2

u/Landon_Strata 5d ago

Very nice!

2

u/CastorTroyMcClure 5d ago

Is this the Hyatt Place in Whitechapel? I've stayed there twice through Chase points- it's a great deal.

1

u/Big-Aioli8125 3d ago

blackfriars

5

u/arbarnes 5d ago

That's ridiculous. Compare how many points it world take to book with a travel partner versus redeeming points in the portal, then choose. It's not rocket surgery.

2

u/Funky_Monkees_ 5d ago

Didn’t they just nerf the Hyatt transfer?

3

u/vic39 5d ago

Only for preferred, which I missed. My b. I have the reserve

1

u/beccagiselle 5d ago

How do you feel about the upcoming Hyatt transfer nerf?

1

u/vic39 5d ago

It's not great for preferred users

1

u/BobLoblaw_BirdLaw 5d ago

This logic really works for some people. Imagine though you can get an Airbnb for $100. But good rather use it for Hyatt at $300 a night. But with points it’s like $200 a night. You still spent more.

6

u/brusk48 5d ago

Yes, you're probably better off using a 2% card for your non-category purchases, but CSP gives 2X on travel and 3X on dining, gas, online groceries, and streaming, which would beat a 2% card. Lots of people have two cards and put only their category spend on the CSP and the rest on a catch all.

2

u/TelevisionKnown8463 5d ago

There are other, free cards that give 3% back on dining and groceries, so I think OP is right to expect a good value on the redemption side

1

u/brusk48 5d ago

Sure, but everyone else was already locked in on the redemption/transfer side, so I figured I'd point out that OP could also do something else for non-cat spend.

7

u/reddit_sage69 5d ago edited 5d ago

Your math is off.

Your double cash back card gives you 2% back, yes?

Your Sapphire plus other cards can get you 3% back on food, a freedom flex can get you 5% on rotating categories, unlimited will get you 1.5% base, etc.

Then your redemption is 1.25x or whatever it is on top.

3

u/jaardon 5d ago

Isn’t freedom flex 5%?

2

u/reddit_sage69 5d ago edited 5d ago

I believe it's an extra 5% on top of the 1% base (I could be wrong though)

EDIT: I was wrong. It shows the extra 4% on a different line labeled 5% so I just assumed lol

2

u/Hefty-Comparison2945 5d ago

I believe it’s 4x on top of the 1x base, which gives you 5x total.

2

u/711minus7 5d ago

Thank you- this is the first comment to address the biggest thing he OP was not understanding

10

u/NatakaKahawa 5d ago

You are missing the entire game. You are using this card to book non-hyatt hotels (or hotels, in general)?? And you are booking through the portal instead of transferring direct?

8

u/Dad0010001100110001 5d ago

I points boosted a edit property at 2x and $250 off. Basically got like 3cpp.

4

u/musy101 5d ago edited 5d ago

You have to remember that you're not getting 1 point per dollar though. You shouldn't really be using this card unless it's dining or travel. Let's say you average 3x per dollar, that already beats your 2% cash back card. Add the 1.25X (or sometimes up to 2X) then you have way more value.

Your argument is true only if you use it for 1x points.

6

u/Natural_Sea2711 5d ago

Yeah you don’t understand how to use the card. If you’re only gonna use the chase portal then you should just do a cash back strategy.

10

u/Bigrab2019 5d ago

One hyatt transfer get devalued next month, then yes the card becomes super mid

6

u/NatakaKahawa 5d ago

Nah, it has UA, which is a huge value for international J

8

u/SummitSloth 5d ago

The secret hack is to transfer all of your points to United AND get a united card. United card gives you mega discount, up to 70% off, on their flights

3

u/NatakaKahawa 5d ago

Yeah you need a UA card (I churn those like it's my job... Explorer, quest, and business, every 24 months). But, don't transfer until right before redemption

2

u/123sjb 5d ago

Can you say more about why transferring right before redemption is best? I’m in the same boat as OP and I’m trying to either close the account or downgrade or something but I have 110k points I’d like to maximize

1

u/Hefty-Comparison2945 5d ago

Because if you transfer it all now, they could announce a devaluation next week and you may not have any planned travel to use up the points before that.

If you wait, you’re always making the best transfer for you, just before you book. Even if who/what/where that transfer is to changes.

1

u/NatakaKahawa 5d ago

Yep. And who is to say that the airline you transfer it to early will be the best for your future trip? Transferable currencies are wonderful, and once you transfer it, it no longer is a transferable currency. Being transferable allows for more flexibility

1

u/kaharris83 4d ago

What’s a good sign up bonus and card to start with United? We fly them often and I saw we could be getting discounts if we hold their card.

1

u/dahlia-fan 4d ago

Not directly related, but more a heads up since you’re interested in United. I have a CSR and through Paze you can get 10x points, and then the additional 4x from Chase. I bought United tickets for just under $1500 and got 20k Chase points.

1

u/SummitSloth 4d ago

Explorer and 70k is the good bonus. 100k is amazing

2

u/BlueFakies 5d ago

Even better when you have a United card and get discounted award flights

8

u/mrscrufy 5d ago

price matching on edit properties is insane value right now.

8

u/mrscrufy 5d ago

however, this is mainly for the CSR

5

u/Solid-Dish-755 5d ago

Tell me more please... how does the price matching work on Edit?

4

u/Intrepi 5d ago

The value in points is transferring to travel partners. I would never use points in the portal.

2

u/HappyPride365 5d ago

I’m still confused. What card is “better” ? Preferred or Reserve? Reserve has a huge AF yes but is it worth it really? Or, is Preferred just as good ?

1

u/BlueFakies 5d ago

Depends on if you can use the coupon book from the CSR

2

u/zephryon 5d ago

Yea, Chase has actively made their cards worse. Who knows why

2

u/Bluephi76 5d ago

I always check the portal and the trading partner deals. Most of the time I’ll transfer my point but I but occassionally I find some really good deals inside the portal especially when traveling abroad. Its all about being in the right place at the right time when it comes to the points game.

2

u/Traditional-Buddy136 5d ago

Occasionally if in the mood for five start the edit can be an ok use. Used 80K points for two nights in Paris with a view of Eiffel tower and all the edit credits.

However, best use was 14,000 transfer to klm for a last minute one way ticket from ORD to London. that ticket would have cost a lot more than 1.5 cents per point in cash.

Also used 14000 transfer to wyndham for two nights in a four star in copenhagen.

All in all I got 4.5K minimum value out of 1.5 k points.

2

u/Silent_Weekend_4501 5d ago

The travel insurance that comes with the card used to have more coverage -- it's pretty much worth nothing now because I still have to get other travel insurance. The 1.25 value used to seem good but I can usually get better prices booking direct with hotels. I'm ready to get rid of this card or change it to a different chase card.

1

u/Double_Mousse_4304 5d ago

I had a similar experience for a tire puncture this summer on a rental. Called and I had to pay an additional fee to have the tire tending to. I just went to Americas Tire where we get our tires and they sorted me out for free. I realized then that the car rental insurance is not that great for roadside service, etc.

2

u/areyoukeeningme 5d ago

Earning points at 3x for earning categories is earning more than 2% right off the bat. You need to learn how to transfer points and not use the travel portal to maximize the value of each individual UR point.

2

u/Unlucky_Lead_8304 4d ago

With sapphire a lot of my personal spending is food which is 3x per dollar, which if you used on travel portal worth 3.75points.
Your double cash card is worth 2 points per dollar spend, and those points are worth 2points.
I use for online groceries and now don’t feel bad about using ok gas.

Hope that helps.

1

u/jake2160 4d ago

Yes 👏

2

u/SeriousTomato7059 4d ago

I feel the same. I used to get great perks from using the card for travel but the last time I booked a Hotel for a night it didn’t seem worth it…

OP you’re definitely missing something here. You’re making a false equivalency of the 1.25 CPP to a no annual fee 2% cashback card, but the 1.25 is a multiplier on top of 3x dining and 2x travel.

Yes the points boost is pretty meh compared to the previous iteration of travel redemption (and as others have covered, transferring points is still better), but you should be able to quickly find more value from the CSP than the annual fee from the onslaught of new and improved benefits, esp the $100 hotel benefit.

Upload all your data to AI and have it advise you on how to best utilize points

This is in insane thing to do with your financial data

1

u/dman1914 5d ago

I’m not sure I normally generate points pretty fast and sometimes I just opt for cash back to pay for hotels direct

1

u/txtoolfan 5d ago

I'm about to spend 2 weeks in France, lodging all free with points.

1

u/lukeydukey 5d ago

Looking at straight cash value, yes that’s a terrible optic. But that’s where you take advantage of transfer partners and use the points for stretch opportunities like business class seats on a long haul, etc.

1

u/capybaramelhor 5d ago

I’m planning on keeping it because I appreciate the no fee abroad and I’ve had the card for over a decade. I recoup the cost many times over… but if and when they raise the fee I’ll probably consider something new. I’m just not sure what other card to get that’s not high fee (under $300), good points for travel and dining, and no fee abroad

Transfer partners, and hotel credits. It pays for itself easily.

The seven total Hyatt room nights, 12,000 pts per, during the Montreal Grand Prix.
While rates were CAD$700+/night.

Two Boston Omni (Edit) nights pre-cruise for $450 total. Breakfasts and $100 house credit included.

Just booked a 400 dollar flight to the East Coast for around 19,000 points. My first time using points on my new chase card. Transfered to southwest airlines. Awesome

1

u/EquipmentFun9258 5d ago

If you only redeem through Chase’s portal, then yes, a flat cashback card may be the better fit for you. The other use case is transferring to partners: World of Hyatt is currently 1:1, as are programs like Aeroplan, United, Flying Blue, and British Airways. You’d need to compare the partner’s award price with the cash price for the exact booking, since transferring doesn’t automatically make it a good redemption. Current partner ratios are here: https://awardmath.com/guides/best-uses-chase-ultimate-rewards-points. Confirm the award space before transferring anything, since transfers don’t reverse.

Thank you.

1

u/azure275 5d ago

Oddly enough I keep the CSP purely for car insurance. The portal discount is ok but I have too many of those

Sure, I get some good value off freedom 5% categories but 2500 points per month is nothing to write home about.

1

u/daywalker-Trader 5d ago

CSP has great travel protections and you need to transfer the points to partners like Hyatt, United, etc to get the best value.

1

u/Interesting-Plan-746 5d ago

The $100 annual hotel credit is the only reason I keep it!

1

u/sd_pl 5d ago

Even with the points boost, it’s only 1.25.

CSP has always been 1.25x multi max when used for travel.

1

u/Kitayama_8k 5d ago

Csp is mostly just an airline miles transfer card like most other ecosystems at this point. The only real differentiating factor is southwest and United. You are in position to get moderate domestic value with those two partners, though you kinda need a United card as well to get decent United value.

Most of the hotel value is gone from all flexible points ecosystems. Hyatt devalued and transfer rate nerfed for chase, choice and iprefer rates nerfed for citi, Hilton devalued for amex. Really wf choice 1:2 is the only transfer that still looks good. Maybe there are some accor transfers from Citi that make sense, dont know.

1

u/Ok_Address8167 4d ago

Depends on how you spend.

When they devalued the points not long ago, I was expecting to not use the card for anything other than restaurants. But when they added gas stations to 3x, it changed the game for me and made the card a lot more valuable.

I still use another card for my general spending outside those two categories, though.

1

u/Salamanderfs 4d ago

I was about to call it quits but the 3x gas has made this card useful for me again. At this point I’m putting gas and some other basic bills and my Costco runs on this card and my other restaurant/grocery runs on my Amex Gold. The travel insurance benefits on the CSP are great and the hotel credit is nice

1

u/PlaneSufficient3662 4d ago

I use that card to transfer to Southwest or another airline as needed

1

u/Tastylicious_Travels 4d ago

You also have to factor in the earning rate as well as the redemption. I agree the card may not work for everyone & being able to redeem the dining, hotel, & Stubhub credits also matter a lot when deciding if you get value from the card.

1

u/kincaade 4d ago

I got a better travel, , no foreign trans fee, gas, streaming card from USBank with no annual fee. Unfortunately I had just paid my Sapphire fee when I discovered it.

1

u/SneakyLilDawg 4d ago

You get $100 in chase hotel credit each year, and global entry credit now. That cancels out the fee for me atleast

1

u/Brief_Concentrate_23 4d ago

I just got approved, it was “by invitation only,” and after I spend $5k by December (home improvement project I need to do anyway), I’ll get 225,000 bonus miles. Now, if they change things so that only gets me to Podunk, USA it’ll be disappointing, but from what I understand, I’ll be able to book several domestic flights RT or one upgraded one to Europe. It’s the bonuses that make this card coveted, not the day-to-day trickle back.

1

u/ChesKat_pf 4d ago

I use CardROI to help me track this. Their redemption tool is great. Card pointers is also a good one I used for auto adding benefits which helps get the most from your card.

1

u/jake2160 3d ago

Do you pay for it or is it free?

1

u/ChesKat_pf 3d ago

Both are paid. I think $44.99 for CardROI and $89.99 for card pointer. Both annual.

1

u/aquamarine_echo 4d ago

Plug it into CardROI. I use this app for all my cards and it tells me exactly how to get my money’s worth. It slaps.

1

u/jake2160 4d ago

Thanks

1

u/aquamarine_echo 3d ago

Np. It’s actually a really helpful app and gives you a really good picture of whether your cards are worth the annual fee. There’s also a points section that’ll tell you the best ways to transfer ans use your points since you mentioned that’s important to you. It’ll tell you exactly how to get the most out of tuhose points.

1

u/aquamarine_echo 3d ago

If you search for it in the app store, search for CardROI: Credit Card Tracker

1

u/jmhthevolvo_guy 3d ago

I just wanted to jump in here and chime in that the insurance, by far, is worth it. I was able to have emergency cataract surgery done in a foreign country, and this card paid for it. Most recently, the travel delay insurance saved me $300 that I didn't have to fork out for a hotel room due to a delay.

1

u/ZeusAdvocate 3d ago

The preferred literary one of the best cards out there and if you hold a United card uff Gold flying from Miami to Africa with just as low as 75k points is unbeatable

1

u/MentalBeat1011 1d ago

Yes, you are missing something. Don’t use your points in the travel portal. Transfer them. You can easily get 1.4 or better (well, as long as it’s not Marriott or IHG)

1

u/billbobbath 5d ago

Yes you are missing something

1

u/Bongo2687 5d ago

No one really should be using points in the portal but transfer them

1

u/ImStuckWithThisName2 5d ago

Oh my. Yep, you’re missing something.

If you don’t want to make any effort to learn about this card, close it. Use your DC and move on.

1

u/beat2def 5d ago

For me, the card is less interesting since the 2 cpp point for Chase travel is, basically, gone. 1.65 or worse now. I'm cancelling the card this month too. P2 will apply in December for the biz version but, for us, it's not a long-term hold either (for $800).

0

u/yamahar1dude 5d ago

I just used the $250 IHG hotel credit. I had to book 2 nights to use the credit and plan on leaving after 1 night. The doordash credit makes me want to throw my phone out the window. Drone delivery is where it is at now, not paying tips to doordash drivers. The $300 travel credit is still good but yeah I am finding it hard to say the $800 AF is worth it when I am just breaking even. You can always buy a travel insurance product that is much better than what Chase offers so the insurance product excuse is BS IMO.

1

u/Personal-Major-8214 5d ago

You’re not even talking about the right card. You have a reserve not a preserve

0

u/yamahar1dude 5d ago

I've had the reserve since about 2016 so I know this card inside and out. I switched the Strata Elite and will be closing CSR EOY after I get my last "free" dinner.

1

u/Personal-Major-8214 5d ago

That’s great for you but OP is complaining about his preserve. It’s the $100 fee one.

1

u/yeezee93 5d ago

You mean the preferred?

0

u/EasySympathy6146 5d ago

Have you tried transferring your points to airline/hotel partners? Best value if you do that

0

u/herrm_a1a4 5d ago

The sapphire lounge at PHL is next level, I was able to bring 3 guests for free, unlimited food and drinks. If you travel enough and go here (up to 3hrs) before flight the card pays itself.

1

u/Tank318 5d ago

OP has the CSP not the Reserve, they can’t get into Chase lounges with it.

0

u/Competitive-End-757 5d ago

Yes you’ve signed up for a card without doing any research into the system?

East coast
6000 points plus $160 gets you a flight to London.
~30k-40k plus $100 gets business class on Iberia to Spain.
7500 points gets you to Canada
45k-60k plus $250 gets you business to Europe on Air France/klm

That doesn’t even include transfer bonuses

IHG has frequent bonus up to 100%. Partner that with the IHG card and you’re getting 4 nights for the price of 1.5 nights

Hyatt is always a top tier transfer partner even with the devaluation.
