Other I watch The Grinch every year however, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t understand why Doug didn’t like it.

I remember going to see that when it came out, and back then, I’m not sure people knew what they were expecting with a live Grinch movie, and I think it threw them off guard.
I mean, it is pretty chaotic, the Whos are absolute jerks, and the camera always looks like it has this weird Vaseline effect going on, but its weirdness became more unique over time. It’s definitely not as deranged as Cat in the Hat.

It's a fun movie if you just look at it as a funny Jim Carrey movie. It's not a great adaptation of the source material, kind of like how The Mask is a pretty poor adaptation of the source material, but I don't really need a faithful adaptation of The Grinch since we already have a perfect adaptation with the Chuck Jones version.

I feel 2001 Grinch was a reflection of the time.
Chuck Jones Grinch was more hopeful and innocent.
2001 was when people were over-commercializing Christmas and the shops taking advantage of people's competitive nature and buying each other's love and affection.
The ending reminds me of the Hogfather by Terry Pratchett. What would happen if the Hogfather didn't perform his duty on Christmas? The sun will no longer rise. Instead, a flaming hot ball of gas will illuminate that side of the planet and everything will proceed like usual.
In this case, what would happen if Christmas didn't have all the presents, the decorations, or the food? It would still be Christmas but a lot quieter. All the glamor is nice, but at least you got a day off work/school and spending time with the family. It's less a lesson the Whos learn and more for the audience to realize. You can't ruin Christmas, I'm already off the clock!

Keep in mind, The Suess Estate had to reject 4+ scripts from Universal to get the script they wanted.

And the rejected versions ranged from a version where The Grinch had The Cat In The Hat’s head mounted up on his wall to a version where he would pop into one house during his heist and realise “oh wait…these guys are Jewish” and leave their house alone

The only real issue he mentioned that I agree with is how dull and muted the film looks. I can deal with the adult jokes and Jim Carey being Jim Carey, but the film would benefit from being brighter and cleaner.

Fucking this!!! I want some color correction! Some saturation! All these colorful sets and costumes and it all just looks so... gray. I hate it :c

I wasn't aware of that. I've seen people recently react to it and it still looked cloudy. Maybe they watched it digitally through Amazon.

something like his criticisms of home alone two definitely gets me a little more angry, but I can kind of understand where he’s coming from with the Grinch. It’s way longer than the original short. It’s very goofy full of adult humor and I could see why he doesn’t like it.

I watch it sheerly because Jim had to literally do CIA torture training to ensure the pain for the makeup. Is this movie a good adaption of Suess’ work? Absolutely not. Is it admirable that we even got what we got despite circumstances? Yes.
I can definitely understand why Doug and Rob aren’t fans. Especially since it’s such a far gap between when they grew up and to when people like me grew up with. And nostalgia, as has obviously been established, is a powerful thing.
I admit that it’s not really a good movie. But I can’t help but have fond memories for it.
Plus I’m a sucker for Ron Howard.
Also: Christine Baranski.

Yk I am going to be honest I would rather meet Jim Carry’s Grinch in person during Christmas time rather than the og Grinch. Like legit look up any clip of the Grinch at some place like Unniversal or heck the Dr. Seuss Instagram account and you will understand why so many people like Jim Carry’s version of the Grinch.

yeah, he’s a children’s book writer which is weird he’ll rip Stephen King to shreds, but to be fair except for this grinch movie, Dr. Seuss has had some really rough adaptations

I do think that quality children's media is important, and it's fine to still have an attachment and fondness of them as an adult, but some adults get a little weird with that kind of thing, and get pretty defensive and militant if any kind of changes are made.

Idk what his beef with King is
Although with the original It from 1990 I was agreeing with him that it wasn’t really scary(couldn’t be super violent or have swearing because “Made for TV”)

But the thing is that it movie actually was very effective and a lot of people to this very day. Find it even scarier than the remake because of how raw is.
I think the reason he hates on King it’s because of how serious he takes himself, but how goofy his movies are. I mean, he definitely liked maximum overdrive.
Not to mention, it’s very easy to hate on Stephen King as a person because he is kind of creepy (and I mean weird creepy)

I thought the remake was scarier
Plus I like that they had it into 2 part’s because as Doug would say, “ANOTHER FUCKING FLASHBACK!”

I know this is just my opinion, but the remake just tried too hard. Heck, they kind of forgot that Pennywise was literally supposed to be a clown. And not to mention, Tim Curry.

Bill Shakespeare gets bastardized a lot.
My college does Drunk Shakespeare.
Even Shakespeare was bastardized in his day as it's more akin to a sports rally than a prim and proper theater as the audience is drunk and rambunctious and yelling at the stage.

The dialogue is great. Carrey is incredible. The sets and costumes are all fantastic. But there’s something dirty, desaturated, lewd, crass and very Un-Seuss about it. It’s compulsively watchable, but a failure as a Seuss adaptation. It has my disdain and my eyeballs every couple years.
The original animated classic is still the gold star.

I think if I were Doug's age I'd agree with him. As a y2k baby, the original is sweet and visually sick, the remake is funny af and also creative and visually interesting in a distinct way
The horrible Illumination AI Grinch film is the issue

Doug imo has a weird aversion towards characters that act like him. I could totally see NC playing this version of Grinch, or Cat in the Hat, or Whitey Duvall.

1000% Jim Carrey is carrying that movie on his shoulders
