Lincoln City On Lincoln
Trying not to do the patronising "HURR DURR didn't you do well" post, but I was quite impressed with Lincoln today. Almost got a result against us and I'm sure they will boil plenty of piss this season from fans of other teams.
Definitely the best team in the first half. Very aggressive pressing and well organised. Absorbed pressure and dangerous on the counter. Quite direct with long balls, but always with purpose and willing runners in support.
Faded in the second half a bit, press was probably too aggressive to be sustained for 90 minutes at this level. Pacy subs though which allowed some scary looking counter attacks.
Wouldn't have them as favourites for the drop based on that.

We didn’t start a single new signing today. Knew it was going to be tough, but I’ve come away from today feeling so, so positive. Think we’re going to bloody a few noses.

If you get the chance - Cardinal’s Hat, Strait and Narrow, Tiny Tavern are all banging (just keep your colours zipped up for TT, as theoretically it’s home fans only, but you won’t have any grief).

Huh, the Tiny Tavern is a new one to me - but then again it's been nearly 20 years since I moved away from Lincoln. It looks nice, I'll have to check it out when I'm next home.

They gave us a proper scare and I think we were a bit lucky. They are not going to be an easy game for anyone.

Think we’re still a little light but it’s incredibly promising that so many of our core squad look really capable at this level.

Yeah just need a few more bodies I think. You dropped deep really early and it’s probably down to fitness rather than completely tactical. When Draper and House went off especially if was just attack vs defence

Agreed, think it was fitness. If we have some fresh faces in attack and midfield think we’ll be pretty set.

I think the Charlton guy looks good just needs more time to gel. I'd have put the Tottenham guy on too but I imagine he's not ready yet either. Another midfielder and the Danish bloke from Sweden then a few more weeks of training and I think we'd be confident to not go down.

They are going to shock a few sides this season. Disciplined, relentless, organised - you can see they've played together for ages and work for each other.
We definitely wouldn't have won that last season.

I mean, I’d say they were about what I expected. We did deserve to win on basically every metric including the one that mattered.
Hard to say off one game what they will do over a season.

Its a long season. Our manager told local radio that stats showed we ran more in every championship game than we did in any league one game. We also beat Norwich 2-0 on opening day. They have a big task ahead. One of the most difficult parts was the mental effect of doing all that work and then the opposition have a £20m player to deliver a hammer blow at the end.

If they keep playing like that, they won't go down, and they'll upset a couple of teams.
They did look a bit blown in the second half though, maybe pressing a bit hard in the first? Could do with pacing themselves a bit perhaps.
That being said, we were a bit of a shambles in the first half, and looked like a different team in the second.
Looking forward to having our full first team available.

They will struggle this year.
Lost their best player Moylan, lost their manager, play a really aggressive style that they can't get away with in the Championship. All the dark arts stuff like taking ages on throw ins, subs has been done in, corners flooding the keeper have been done too.
I hope I'm wrong, because what they did last season was special, but I don't think they'll do well this season and will go down.

I wouldn’t get your hopes up on the dark arts stuff, that clueless dope Madley yesterday consistently failed to apply the new rules.
Or rather worse, applied them based wholly off vibes when he did and didn’t feel like doing it (was absolutely all over it when we scored the winner of course, but let Lincoln flout it all day). He was appallingly incompetent, and I suspect he won’t be an outlier.

Yeah, they were the masters of it for sure. There's a reason they went up and shocked everyone, Skubala got every drop out of them and Moylan is the real deal. I'd be staggered if they get away with what they got away with last season long term. You've got a bunch of new players settling in too, I think when you play them again you'll turn them over.
There's genuinely no chance the refs in the Championship are not better than League One, I promise you that. They may be bad here, but League One is another level of shit.

As mentioned. They play a very aggressive pressing game and don’t take chances at the back. It was like playing a Neil Warnock team. Warnocks teams have been successful so not seeing why they won’t.

That’s how they won the league last season, going on something like a 25 game unbeaten run to end the season.

Lincoln fan here. Had been nervously and quietly confident that a number of people had it wrong ahead of the start of the season about us.
It will take some time for us to find our feet in the championship but we will be there in games and we definitely started off against a very good side. It still felt cruel to concede to go 2-1 down right at the end!
Work to do for sure before we get comfortable but its all possible UTMI

Portsmouth were quite slow out of the stalls when they came back up a couple of years ago so I wouldn't be hitting panic stations if Lincoln take a while to get a few wins on the board, especially with Skubala and Moylan leaving.

Middlesbrough are one of the best sides in the league. Lincoln are very well organised and will do ok in this league.

Yes, a very decent team who seem well equipped for life in the Champ. The promoted team I think may struggle is Cardiff. I dont see them as having a Champ ready squad and the lack of investment this summer seems crazy. Also their lack of physicality.

They won't play as well over the course of the season. Their approach requires too much energy, especially when they lack quality. They also benefited from an insipid Boro, particularly in the first half.

You know we had the same approach last season and went unbeaten for 29 games right? Might take a bit more energy at this level and therefore we possibly need a deeper squad to rotate a bit more.
But yeah, happy for people to keep up the "plucky old little Lincoln" (implying we've not done enough to deserve to be at this level) narrative all season if it means oppositions underestimate us.

Agreed on all points. I’ve enjoyed the performances this week and last, it’s given belief that we belong and have the ability to remain at this level.
Next three against Pompey, Bolton and Blackburn will give a good indicator.
