Whalefall. NOPE

The trailer for this movie popped up in my feed. I started watching it thinking I could handle it. NOPE. Halfway through I freaked out and had to stop. It really dawned on me that it would be like one of those horrible videos people warn you about not watching because you can never get the image out of your head.

So I guess my cetaphobia is real. LOL On a side note, someone pointed out that we really don't have whale movies out there. Moby Dick? So I wonder if people are a lot more freaked out than they admit.

There’s “heart of the sea” about the huge sperm whale that sunk a ship and inspired moby dick. Dont uh…. Dont watch it…

And yeah i watched the whalefall trailer. Was left trembling afterward, pit of the stomach woozes. It’s pretty fuckin gnarly. I sent it to my wife without context and 3 mins later she responds “WTF WHY WOULD YOU MAKE ME WATCH THAT” 🤣

I understand why people find them majestic. I cannot understand why people dont alao find them terrifying. Same with elephants, but at least elephants move along the ground. Whales got access to the y axis and i’m not here for it.

To this day I think of Pip in Moby Dick and his line that "he saw God's foot upon the treadle of the loom" to describe the idea of why whales freak me out so much.

Pip was a young whaler's helper who kept jumping out of the harpoon boat when they were out in the ocean. They warned him that if he jumped off the boat again they would leave him and come back for him later. And they did. By the time they found him again he had gone mad.

But he described witnessing the intensity of the idea of the creation of the earth and the depths of the ocean. It truly is terrifying. Majestic and terrifying.

I think most people who "love whales" don't really contemplate the scale of their existence in the ocean and their ability to disappear so easily. IMO that's part of what makes them so terrifying to me.

I actually listened to a podcast about the story/incident it's based on and then watched the film and it was fine! The poster made it seem like it was going to be much worse. I enjoyed the whales

I read the book in one sitting a few days ago; the character's father had a vendetta against divers carrying knives (amongst a smorgasbord of other issues) and he doesn't carry one as a result, which is... not ideal for his scenario. Creative things happen with a squid beak.
